We conducted a phase III trial to determine whether treatment with pemetrexed and cisplatin results in survival time superior to that achieved with cisplatin alone.

Patients And Methods: Chemotherapy-naive patients who were not eligible for curative surgery were randomly assigned to receive pemetrexed 500 mg/m and cisplatin 75 mg/m on day 1, or cisplatin 75 mg/m on day 1.

A new UHPLC-MS/MS method for the screening of urinary oligosaccharides expands the detection of storage disorders.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

January 2021

Division of Metabolism and Metabolic Diseases Research Unit, Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital, IRCCS, Viale San Paolo 15, 00146, Rome, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Oligosaccharidoses are storage disorders caused by enzymatic defects that lead to the accumulation of specific oligosaccharides, and a new mass spectrometry method has been developed to diagnose these disorders through urine analysis.* -
  • The method, using UHPLC-MS/MS, analyzed urine samples without derivatization and successfully confirmed diagnoses for various oligosaccharidoses and gangliosidosis through identification of unique oligosaccharide profiles.* -
  • The new screening method enhances the detection capability for a wider range of storage disorders, including some linked to inherited autophagy issues, by demonstrating clear differences in profiles between affected patients and healthy controls.*

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare form of primary systemic vasculitis with heterogeneous presentations, treatments and disease course. Historical approaches to classification and diagnostic terminology are reviewed. Since differentiation of PAN from microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and other ANCA vasculitides by the Chapel Hill conference statements, and with hepatitis associated PAN defined as a secondary vasculitis, the phenotyping and subclassification of PAN has received little attention.
