Paragangliomas and syringomyelia in Tetralogy of Fallot-A case report and literature review.

Clin Case Rep

October 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology 3rd Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady, Charles University Prague Czech Republic.

Pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries, paragangliomas, and syringomyelia are uncommon diseases. Furthermore, in the absence of any genetic link and with less than five reported adult patients surviving unrepaired rare form of Tetralogy of Fallot, our case shows noteworthiness. The possibility of definitive treatment of these conditions is rendered unsafe due to this persistent defect.

Individuals recovering from COVID-19 may experience persistent impairment in verbal memory performance, potentially due to illness-related hippocampal injury. Although verbal memory dysfunction is central to schizophrenia, the interactions between this vulnerability and COVID-19 remain unclear, with no imaging studies addressing the issue to-date. To explore this gap and generate hypotheses for future research, we adopted a multiple case study approach.

Psychomodulatory substances: New legislative framework for control of psychoactive substances in Czechia.

Int J Drug Policy

November 2024

Spolecnost Podane ruce, Brno, Czech Republic; Government Council for Addiction Policy, Office of the Government, Prague, Czech Republic.

This article challenges drug prohibition advocated by UN conventions as the prevailing regulatory model for psychoactive substances, highlighting its ineffectiveness, harmfulness and outdated nature. At the same time, the conventions exclude some psychoactive substances from international regulation, leaving control to individual countries. Presenting an innovative approach, this article outlines an approach to the legal regulation of psychomodulatory substances (psychoactive substances with low health and societal risk) in non-medical contexts.

Article Synopsis
  • A large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted with over 6000 participants to investigate genetic risk factors for isolated dystonia, aiming to improve upon earlier studies that found no significant genetic links.
  • The study included 4303 dystonia patients and 2362 healthy controls, analyzing various factors like age of onset and affected body areas, but ultimately failed to identify any common genetic variants associated with dystonia.
  • The findings suggest that isolated dystonia may not be influenced by common genetic variations, highlighting the need for more extensive studies like whole-genome sequencing to uncover potential genetic contributions.

  • The study investigates the link between cis-vaccenic acid (cVA) in plasma lipid compartments and insulin sensitivity in men with hyperlipidemia.
  • It analyzes 231 hyperlipidemic men and compares them based on cVA levels, finding those with higher cVA had lower insulin and better insulin resistance markers.
  • The findings suggest that higher cVA in plasma phospholipids may be associated with improved insulin sensitivity among hyperlipidemic men, although mixed research results exist on this topic.

Cell cycle checkpoints, oncogene-induced senescence and programmed cell death represent intrinsic barriers to tumorigenesis. Protein phosphatase magnesium-dependent 1 (PPM1D) is a negative regulator of the tumour suppressor p53 and has been implicated in termination of the DNA damage response. Here, we addressed the consequences of increased PPM1D activity resulting from the gain-of-function truncating mutations in exon 6 of the PPM1D.

Using immunohistochemistry, we examined a large cohort of 135 ovarian tumors, made up of 96 low-grade serous carcinomas (LGSCs) and 39 serous borderline tumors (micropapillary variant, mSBT), with the aim of exploring their HER2 status (overexpression). We followed with comprehensive genomic analyses on this sample set from our previous study, which revealed HER2 mutation in 5% (4/75) of LGSC and 10% (3/29) of mSBT. No cases were evaluated as HER2-positive, but 6 LGSCs and 1 mSBT were scored as HER2 1+, and 2 LGSCs and 1 mSBT showed the so-called HER2 "ultra-low" phenotype.
