Glucose is a critical nutrient for energy metabolism. The SLC2A2 gene is essential for glucose sensing and homeostasis, as it encodes the facilitated glucose transporter GLUT2. During diabetes treatment, the C-allele of rs8192675 in SLC2A2 has been found to regulate the action of metformin and reduce the absolute level of HbA1c more effectively than the T-allele.

Podocyte senescence can cause persistent podocyte injury and albuminuria in diabetic kidney disease (DKD), but the mechanism remains obscure. In this study, podocyte senescence was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining in podocytes from patients and mice with DKD. Rheb1 knockout in podocytes aggravated podocyte senescence and injury in diabetic mice, but mitigated podocyte injury in mice with podocyte-specific mTORC1 activation induced by Tsc1 deletion.

Oxymatrine (OMT) as a quinazine alkaloid extracted from matrine has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour effects. However, the protective mechanism of OMT on NSAID-associated small bowel mucosal injury remains unreported. We found that OMT could improve the clinical symptoms and pathological inflammation scoring, reduce the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α and cell apoptosis, promote cell proliferation and protect intestinal mucosal barrier as compared with the Diclofenac Sodium (DS) group.

Elucidating acceptance and clinical indications to support the rational design of drug-eluting contact lenses.

Int J Pharm

November 2024

School of Pharmacy, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Inflammation and Molecular Drug Targets, Nantong University, Nantong 226001, China. Electronic address:

The advent of drug-eluting contact lenses (DECLs) has opened up new avenues for the treatment of eye diseases. DECLs is expected to partially overcome the shortcomings of eye drops due to single-dose packaging, accurate dosing, prolonged drug elution behavior, and simplified dosing procedures. Currently, a significant proportion of the DECLs design effort has been directed towards enhancing the compatibility of contact lenses with drugs.

Epigenetic control of skeletal muscle atrophy.

Cell Mol Biol Lett

July 2024

Key Laboratory of Neuroregeneration of Jiangsu and Ministry of Education, Co-Innovation Center of Neuroregeneration, NMPA Key Laboratory for Research and Evaluation of Tissue Engineering Technology Products, Nantong University, Nantong, 26001, China.

Skeletal muscular atrophy is a complex disease involving a large number of gene expression regulatory networks and various biological processes. Despite extensive research on this topic, its underlying mechanisms remain elusive, and effective therapeutic approaches are yet to be established. Recent studies have shown that epigenetics play an important role in regulating skeletal muscle atrophy, influencing the expression of numerous genes associated with this condition through the addition or removal of certain chemical modifications at the molecular level.

Background: Modifying diet is crucial for diabetes and complication management. Numerous studies have shown that adjusting eating habits to align with the circadian rhythm may positively affect metabolic health. However, eating midpoint, eating duration, and their associations with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) are poorly understood.

Background: Glioma is the most frequent type of malignancy that may damage the brain with high morbidity and mortality rates and patients' prognoses are still dismal. Ferroptosis, a newly uncovered mode of programmed cell death, may be triggered to destroy glioma cells. Nevertheless, the significance of ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) in predicting prognosis in glioma individuals is still a mystery.

MuSCs and IPCs: roles in skeletal muscle homeostasis, aging and injury.

Cell Mol Life Sci

January 2024

Key Laboratory of Neuroregeneration of Jiangsu and Ministry of Education, Co-Innovation Center of Neuroregeneration, NMPA Key Laboratory for Research and Evaluation of Tissue Engineering Technology Products, Nantong University, Nantong, 226001, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China.

Skeletal muscle is a highly specialized tissue composed of myofibres that performs crucial functions in movement and metabolism. In response to external stimuli and injuries, a range of stem/progenitor cells, with muscle stem cells or satellite cells (MuSCs) being the predominant cell type, are rapidly activated to repair and regenerate skeletal muscle within weeks. Under normal conditions, MuSCs remain in a quiescent state, but become proliferative and differentiate into new myofibres in response to injury.

Background: In the present study, we explored the role of N-methyladenosine (mA) modification of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and its association with ferroptosis in lens epithelium cells (LECs) of age-related cataract (ARC).

Methods: Through mA RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (mA-RIP-seq) and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), we identified mA mediated and differentially expressed lncRNAs (dme-lncRNAs) in ARC patients. Based on bioinformatics analysis, we selected critical dme-lncRNAs and pathways associated with ARC formation to reveal their potential molecular mechanisms.

During spermatogenesis, mitochondria extend along the whole length of spermatid tail and offer a structural platform for microtubule reorganization and synchronized spermatid individualization, that eventually helps to generate mature sperm in Drosophila. However, the regulatory mechanism of spermatid mitochondria during elongation remains largely unknown. Herein, we demonstrated that NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 42 kDa subunit (ND-42) was essential for male fertility and spermatid elongation in Drosophila.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between fibrinogen albumin ratio (FAR) and arterial stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), as measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV).
  • It involved 413 T2D patients, with findings showing significant differences in baPWV levels and rates of arterial stiffness across different FAR quartiles.
  • The results suggest that FAR is independently associated with arterial stiffness, particularly in male patients, indicating that FAR could be a useful marker for assessing cardiovascular risk in this demographic.

This work presents a synergistic system for enantioseparation in capillary electrophoresis (CE) with a chiral ionic liquid (CIL) based on D-10-camphorsulfonic acid as additive and carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CM-β-CD) as the chiral selector. The proposed method showed excellent enantioseparation performance towards sixteen chiral drugs. In contrast to the single CM-β-CD system, the notably improved resolution (Rs) and selectivity factor (α) of model drugs were observed in synergistic system.
