Categorization of patients according to their characteristics may simplify decision-making, but it fails to account for the continuous nature of risk and individual variability. Artificial intelligence has the ability to handle more complex continuous data for more precise, individualized recommendations, but several challenges must be overcome to unlock this potential.

Feasibility of closed-loop titration of norepinephrine infusion in patients undergoing moderate- and high-risk surgery.

Background: Vasopressor agents are used to prevent intraoperative hypotension and ensure adequate perfusion. Vasopressors are usually administered as intermittent boluses or manually adjusted infusions, but this practice requires considerable time and attention. We have developed a closed-loop vasopressor (CLV) controller to correct hypotension more efficiently.

P2Y Receptor Activation Promotes Inflammation and Tissue Remodeling in Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a disease with a poor prognosis and very few available treatment options. The involvement of the purinergic receptor subtypes P2Y and P2X in fibrotic lung disease has been demonstrated recently. In this study, we investigated the role of P2Y receptors in the pathogenesis of IPF in humans and in the animal model of bleomycin-induced lung injury.

Advanced MRI techniques: biomarkers in neuropsychiatric lupus.

Objectives The objective of this study was to determine whether advanced MRI could provide biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). Methods Our prospective study included 28 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with primary central NPSLE, 22 patients without NPSLE and 20 healthy controls. We used visual scales to evaluate atrophy and white matter hyperintensities, voxel-based morphometry and Freesurfer to measure brain volume, plus diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) to assess white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) damage.

Involvement of the anterior portion of the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa in the painful shoulder.

Objective: The purpose of our study was to verify that increased widening of the anterior portion of the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa is associated with anteromedial shoulder pain.

Materials And Methods: Bursography, sonography, and CT were performed in six cadaver shoulders and compared with anatomic sections in neutral position and while the humerus was extended and internally rotated. For the clinical study, the width of the anterior portion of the bursa was measured in both positions in both shoulders of 27 patients referred because of shoulder pain and in eight asymptomatic volunteers.

Tropisetron in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Study Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of tropisetron, a selective 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist, in preventing nausea and vomiting in high-risk inpatients undergoing various surgical procedures.

Design: Prospective, open, nonrandomized, observational, interventional study.

Setting: Postanesthesia care unit, and surgical wards of the University Hospital Center, Charleroi.

Peripheral blood stem cell contamination in mantle cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma: the case for purging?

Intensification using peripheral blood stem cells collected after chemotherapy followed by growth factors is being increasingly investigated as an alternative to conventional chemotherapy for mantle cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We investigated 14 grades III-IV, t(11;14)-positive cases for contamination of PBSC collected after a polychemotherapy regimen followed by G-CSF. Patients were first treated with a polychemotherapy regimen.
