Benefits of Combining Molecular Biology and Controlled Human Infection Model Methodologies in Advancing Vaccine Development.

J Mol Biol

December 2023

Canadian Center for Vaccinology, IWK Health, Nova Scotia Health, and Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Electronic address:

Infectious diseases continue to account for a significant portion of global deaths despite the use of vaccines for several centuries. Immunization programs around the world are a testament to the great success of multiple vaccines, yet there are still diseases without vaccines and others that require safer more effective ones. Addressing uncontrolled and emerging disease threats is restrained by the limitations and bottlenecks encountered with traditional vaccine development paradigms.

Multiple studies have reported a significant treatment-free remission (TFR) rate of 50%-60% in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) who discontinue tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy. However, the remaining half of these patients still require re-initiation of TKI therapy for leukaemia control. It remains unclear if TKI drugs should be switched for re-therapy in patients who failed the first TFR (TFR1) attempt.

Article Synopsis
  • A recent study called RESCUE-ASDH looked at two types of brain surgeries for treating a specific brain injury called acute subdural hematoma (ASDH).
  • The research included data from many hospitals across Europe and Israel, tracking how often each surgery was used and the outcomes for patients over a few years.
  • Results showed that there was a big difference among hospitals in how often they chose to use decompressive craniectomy (DC) compared to craniotomy, with some hospitals using DC for a lot of their patients, while others used it much less.

Lignocellulose, as the most abundant natural organic carbon on earth, plays a key role in regulating the global carbon cycle, but there have been only few studies in marine ecosystems. Little information is available about the extant lignin-degrading bacteria in coastal wetlands, limiting our understanding of their ecological roles and traits in lignocellulose degradation. We utilized lignocellulose enrichment experiments coupled with 16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun metagenomics sequencing to identify and characterize bacterial consortia attributed to different lignin/lignocellulosic substrates in the southern-east intertidal zone of East China Sea.
