Inpatient management of low-risk patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) places a large resource burden on the healthcare system. Adult patients diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) in the emergency department (ED) have historically been hospitalized and treated with therapeutic anticoagulation. However, over the last two decades, outpatient treatment of patients with acute DVT and low risk PE has become increasingly accepted as an effective and safe option for patients given the low risk of short-term clinical deterioration.

Long-Covid (LC), Post-Sepsis-Syndrome (PSS) and Post-Intensive-Care-Syndrome (PICS) show remarkable overlaps in their clinical presentation. Nevertheless, it is unclear if they are distinct syndromes, which may co-occur in the same patient, or if they are three different labels to describe similar symptoms, assigned on the basis on patient history and professional perspective of the treating physician. Therefore, we reviewed the current literature on the relation between LC, PSS and PICS.

Mechanistic Differences between Torsemide and Furosemide.

J Am Soc Nephrol

January 2025

Section of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut.

Key Points: Oral torsemide was not superior to furosemide in measures of renal tubular delivery or duration of action. A dose equivalence of approximately 40 mg oral furosemide:10 mg oral torsemide resulted in similar natriuresis. The two-fold higher doses of torsemide did not improve fluid status due to the kidney’s compensation.

Airway-derived emphysema-specific alveolar type II cells exhibit impaired regenerative potential in COPD.

Eur Respir J

December 2024

Center for Lung Aging and Regeneration (CLAR), Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Emphysema, the progressive destruction of gas exchange surfaces in the lungs, is a hallmark of COPD that is presently incurable. This therapeutic gap is largely due to a poor understanding of potential drivers of impaired tissue regeneration, such as abnormal lung epithelial progenitor cells, including alveolar type II (ATII) and airway club cells. We discovered an emphysema-specific subpopulation of ATII cells located in enlarged distal alveolar sacs, termed asATII cells.

Geroscience posits that molecular drivers underlie the aging process. Gerotherapeutics entail strategies to counter molecular drivers of aging to reduce the chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes they trigger. Although the concept of gerotherapeutics for prevention has generated much excitement, the implications of prescribing potentially harmful medications to older adults who are "healthy" have been associated with many delays.

UConn Center on Aging, UConn Health, Farmington, CT 06030, USA; Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences, UConn Health, Farmington, CT 06030, USA. Electronic address:

A key challenge in aging research is extending lifespan in tandem with slowing down functional decline so that life with good health (healthspan) can be extended. Here, we show that monthly clearance, starting from 20 months, of a small number of cells that highly express p21 (p21) improves cardiac and metabolic function and extends both median and maximum lifespans in mice. Importantly, by assessing the health and physical function of these mice monthly until death, we show that clearance of p21 cells improves physical function at all remaining stages of life, suggesting healthspan extension.
