Fakultät für Physik, Munich Quantum Center, and Center for NanoScience (CeNS), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, 80539, München, Germany.

Indistinguishable single photons in the telecom-bandwidth of optical fibers are indispensable for long-distance quantum communication. Solid-state single photon emitters have achieved excellent performance in key benchmarks, however, the demonstration of indistinguishability at room-temperature remains a major challenge. Here, we report room-temperature photon indistinguishability at telecom wavelengths from individual nanotube defects in a fiber-based microcavity operated in the regime of incoherent good cavity-coupling.

Effect of crystal facets in plasmonic catalysis.

Nat Commun

May 2024

Nanoinstitute Munich, Faculty of Physics, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 80539, München, Germany.

While the role of crystal facets is well known in traditional heterogeneous catalysis, this effect has not yet been thoroughly studied in plasmon-assisted catalysis, where attention has primarily focused on plasmon-derived mechanisms. Here, we investigate plasmon-assisted electrocatalytic CO reduction using different shapes of plasmonic Au nanoparticles - nanocube (NC), rhombic dodecahedron (RD), and octahedron (OC) - exposing {100}, {110}, and {111} facets, respectively. Upon plasmon excitation, Au OCs doubled CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) and tripled CO partial current density (j) compared to a dark condition, with NCs also improving under illumination.

Nat Chem

August 2024

Department of Chemistry and Center for NanoScience (CeNS), University of Munich (LMU), Munich, Germany.

Porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) enable the realization of functional materials with molecular precision. Past research has typically focused on generating rigid frameworks where structural and optoelectronic properties are static. Here we report dynamic two-dimensional (2D) COFs that can open and close their pores upon uptake or removal of guests while retaining their crystalline long-range order.

State-of-the-art super-resolution microscopy allows researchers to spatially resolve single proteins in dense clusters. However, accurate quantification of protein organization and stoichiometries requires a general method to evaluate absolute binder labeling efficiency, which is currently unavailable. Here we introduce a universally applicable approach that uses a reference tag fused to a target protein of interest.

Hybrid Moiré Excitons and Trions in Twisted MoTe-MoSe Heterobilayers.

Nano Lett

April 2024

Fakultät für Physik, Munich Quantum Center, and Center for NanoScience (CeNS), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, 80539 München, Germany.

We report experimental and theoretical studies of MoTe-MoSe heterobilayers with rigid moiré superlattices controlled by the twist angle. Using an effective continuum model that combines resonant interlayer electron tunneling with stacking-dependent moiré potentials, we identify the nature of moiré excitons and the dependence of their energies, oscillator strengths, and Landé -factors on the twist angle. Within the same framework, we interpret distinct signatures of bound complexes among electrons and moiré excitons in nearly collinear heterostacks.

Engineering an artificial catch bond using mechanical anisotropy.

Nat Commun

April 2024

Institute of Physical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Basel, 4058, Basel, Switzerland.

Catch bonds are a rare class of protein-protein interactions where the bond lifetime increases under an external pulling force. Here, we report how modification of anchor geometry generates catch bonding behavior for the mechanostable Dockerin G:Cohesin E (DocG:CohE) adhesion complex found on human gut bacteria. Using AFM single-molecule force spectroscopy in combination with bioorthogonal click chemistry, we mechanically dissociate the complex using five precisely controlled anchor geometries.

Cell-matrix adhesions connect the cytoskeleton to the extracellular environment and are essential for maintaining the integrity of tissue and whole organisms. Remarkably, cell adhesions can adapt their size and composition to an applied force such that their size and strength increases proportionally to the load. Mathematical models for the clutch-like force transmission at adhesions are frequently based on the assumption that mechanical load is applied tangentially to the adhesion plane.

Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Planegg, Germany; Faculty of Physics and Center for NanoScience, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, Germany. Electronic address:

To understand biological processes, it is necessary to reveal the molecular heterogeneity of cells by gaining access to the location and interaction of all biomolecules. Significant advances were achieved by super-resolution microscopy, but such methods are still far from reaching the multiplexing capacity of proteomics. Here, we introduce secondary label-based unlimited multiplexed DNA-PAINT (SUM-PAINT), a high-throughput imaging method that is capable of achieving virtually unlimited multiplexing at better than 15 nm resolution.

Single-site photocatalysts (SSPCs) are well-established as potent platforms for designing innovative materials to accomplish direct solar-to-fuel conversion. Compared to classical inorganic porous materials, such as zeolites and silica, covalent organic frameworks (COFs)─an emerging class of porous polymers that combine high surface areas, structural diversity, and chemical stability─are attractive candidates for SSPCs due to their molecular-level precision and intrinsic light harvesting ability, both amenable to structural engineering. In this Perspective, we summarize the design concepts and state-of-the-art strategies for the construction of COF SSPCs, and we review the development of COF SSPCs and their applications in solar-to-fuel conversion from their inception.

Soft Condensed Matter and Biophysics, Department of Physics and Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science, Utrecht University, Princetonplein 1, 3584 CC Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) provide new opportunities for enzyme-free biosensing of nucleic acid biomarkers and magnetic actuation by patterning on DNA origami, yet how the DNA grafting density affects their dynamics and accessibility remains poorly understood. Here, we performed surface functionalization of MNPs with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) click chemistry with a tunable grafting density, which enables the encapsulation of single MNPs inside a functional polymeric layer. We used several complementary methods to show that particle translational and rotational dynamics exhibit a sigmoidal dependence on the ssDNA grafting density.

Learning dynamical models of single and collective cell migration: a review.

Rep Prog Phys

April 2024

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 1081 HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Single and collective cell migration are fundamental processes critical for physiological phenomena ranging from embryonic development and immune response to wound healing and cancer metastasis. To understand cell migration from a physical perspective, a broad variety of models for the underlying physical mechanisms that govern cell motility have been developed. A key challenge in the development of such models is how to connect them to experimental observations, which often exhibit complex stochastic behaviours.

Institute for Nanostructure and Solid-State Physics, Center for Hybrid Nanostructures, University of Hamburg, 22761, Hamburg, Germany.

Nanocrystal self-assembly into supercrystals provides a versatile platform for creating novel materials and devices with tailored properties. While common self-assembly strategies imply the use of purified nanoparticles after synthesis, conversion of chemical precursors directly into nanocrystals and then supercrystals in simple procedures has been rarely reported. Here, the nucleation and growth of CuPd icosahedra and their consecutive assembly into large closed-packed face-centered cubic (fcc) supercrystals are studied.

Field-Induced Hybridization of Moiré Excitons in MoSe_{2}/WS_{2} Heterobilayers.

Phys Rev Lett

Fakultät für Physik, Munich Quantum Center, and Center for NanoScience (CeNS), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, 80539 München, Germany.

We study experimentally and theoretically the hybridization among intralayer and interlayer moiré excitons in a MoSe_{2}/WS_{2} heterostructure with antiparallel alignment. Using a dual-gate device and cryogenic white light reflectance and narrow-band laser modulation spectroscopy, we subject the moiré excitons in the MoSe_{2}/WS_{2} heterostack to a perpendicular electric field, monitor the field-induced dispersion and hybridization of intralayer and interlayer moiré exciton states, and induce a crossover from type I to type II band alignment. Moreover, we employ perpendicular magnetic fields to map out the dependence of the corresponding exciton Landé g factors on the electric field.

III-V semiconductor nanowire (NW) heterostructures with axial InGaAs active regions hold large potential for diverse on-chip device applications, including site-selectively integrated quantum light sources, NW lasers with high material gain, as well as resonant tunneling diodes and avalanche photodiodes. Despite various promising efforts toward high-quality single or multiple axial InGaAs heterostacks using noncatalytic growth mechanisms, the important roles of facet-dependent shape evolution, crystal defects, and the applicability to more universal growth schemes have remained elusive. Here, we report the growth of optically active InGaAs axial NW heterostructures via completely catalyst-free, selective-area molecular beam epitaxy directly on silicon (Si) using GaAs(Sb) NW arrays as tunable, high-uniformity growth templates and highlight fundamental relationships between structural, morphological, and optical properties of the InGaAs region.

February 2024

Department of Chemistry and Center for NanoScience, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 81377 München, Germany.

A bottleneck in many studies utilizing single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer is the attainable photon count rate, as it determines the temporal resolution of the experiment. As many biologically relevant processes occur on time scales that are hardly accessible with currently achievable photon count rates, there has been considerable effort to find strategies to increase the stability and brightness of fluorescent dyes. Here, we use DNA nanoantennas to drastically increase the achievable photon count rates and observe fast biomolecular dynamics in the small volume between two plasmonic nanoparticles.

Intracellular protein patterns are described by (nearly) mass-conserving reaction-diffusion systems. While these patterns initially form out of a homogeneous steady state due to the well-understood Turing instability, no general theory exists for the dynamics of fully nonlinear patterns. We develop a unifying theory for nonlinear wavelength-selection dynamics in (nearly) mass-conserving two-component reaction-diffusion systems independent of the specific mathematical model chosen.
