Objectives: The Lessening Organ Dysfunction with Vitamin C trial showed a harmful effect of vitamin C on 28-day death or persistent organ dysfunction. To maximize interpretation, we present a post hoc Bayesian reanalysis.
Design: Bayesian reanalysis of a randomized placebo-controlled trial.

Endolysosomal defects in neurons are central to the pathogenesis of prion and other neurodegenerative disorders. In prion disease, prion oligomers traffic through the multivesicular body (MVB) and are routed for degradation in lysosomes or for release in exosomes, yet how prions impact proteostatic pathways is unclear. We found that prion-affected human and mouse brain showed a marked reduction in Hrs and STAM1 (ESCRT-0), which route ubiquitinated membrane proteins from early endosomes into MVBs.

The Butterfly Girls (BFG) Study is a culturally and developmentally appropriate online obesity prevention program for 8-10-year-old Black girls designed with key stakeholders in the Black community. This multi-methods investigation, conducted with parent-child dyads who participated in an outcome evaluation of the intervention, aimed to understand parent and child reactions to the program. We were particularly interested in understanding perceptions regarding its cultural and developmental appropriateness, relevance and acceptability.

The increased susceptibility of neonates to specific pathogens has previously been attributed to an underdeveloped immune system. More recent data suggest neonates have effective protection against most pathogens but are particularly susceptible to those that target immune functions specific to neonates. (), the causative agent of "whooping cough", causes more serious disease in infants attributed to its production of pertussis toxin (PTx), although the neonate-specific immune functions it targets remain unknown.

Purpose: Many current radiotherapy patient education materials are not patient-centered. An interprofessional team developed Communicating the Gynecologic Brachytherapy Experience (CoGBE), a graphic narrative discussion guide for cylinder, intracavitary, and interstitial high-dose-rate (HDR) gynecologic brachytherapy. This study assesses perceived clinical benefits, usability, and anxiety-reduction of CoGBE.

Autistic adults suffer from an alarmingly high and increasing unemployment rate. Many companies use pre-employment personality screening tests. These filters likely have disparate impacts on neurodivergent individuals, exacerbating this social problem.

Pathogens such as must overcome host-induced selective pressures, including limited iron availability. To cope with the harsh conditions of the host environment, can adapt its physiology in multiple ways. One of these adaptations is the fermenting small-colony variant (SCV) phenotype, which is known to be inherently tolerant to certain classes of antibiotics and heme toxicity.

Importance: The longer-term effects of therapies for the treatment of critically ill patients with COVID-19 are unknown.
Objective: To determine the effect of multiple interventions for critically ill adults with COVID-19 on longer-term outcomes.
Design, Setting, And Participants: Prespecified secondary analysis of an ongoing adaptive platform trial (REMAP-CAP) testing interventions within multiple therapeutic domains in which 4869 critically ill adult patients with COVID-19 were enrolled between March 9, 2020, and June 22, 2021, from 197 sites in 14 countries.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has provided an opportunity for significant reflection on our public health response as providers. Throughout the past two years, we learned that administration of COVID-19 vaccines, rapidly and widely across all communities, has been key to halting the spread of the virus. One significant challenge in promoting a large-scale immunization program is the threat of vaccine hesitancy.

She lived most of her life in the shadow of mental illness. Her poetry provides penetrating insights into her experiences of this in herself and in members of her family.

A subset of individuals with smoldering myeloma (SMM) are at a high risk of progression to symptomatic myeloma. Current efforts are focused on identifying this high-risk group and intercepting the disease process before its progression. There is no consensus on what the goal of an intervention should be, whether to aim for a cure through a high-intensity intervention or pursue immunologic disease control using the least intense approach.

Background: Scant research has focused on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the SCI population, despite high prevalence estimates. Fortunately, prolonged exposure therapy (PE) is a well-researched and highly effective treatment for PTSD. Our recent clinical trial showed that standard 12-session PE was effective for PTSD treatment among inpatients with SCI.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) frequently occurs in patients with richly pigmented skin complexions and can frequently be the most bothersome aspect of acne in this population.
Methods: The project used a modified Delphi hybrid process comprising face-to-face discussions followed by an online follow-up.

Purpose: To assess whether pre-existing chronic kidney disease (CKD) modified the relationship between the strategy for renal-replacement theraphy (RRT) initiation and clinical outcomes in the STARRT-AKI trial.
Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a multi-national randomized trial. We included patients who had documented pre-existing estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) data prior to hospitalization, and we defined CKD as an eGFR ≤ 59 mL/min/1.

Background: Intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness often develops in patients who are undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation. Early active mobilization may mitigate ICU-acquired weakness, increase survival, and reduce disability.
Methods: We randomly assigned 750 adult patients in the ICU who were undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation to receive increased early mobilization (sedation minimization and daily physiotherapy) or usual care (the level of mobilization that was normally provided in each ICU).

Background: The United States is becoming increasingly diverse, and between 2016 and 2019, an increase of 945 832 aesthetic procedures was recorded for Hispanic, African American, and Asian American patients combined. In aesthetics, where outcomes are technique dependent and tied to the clinician's ability to tailor treatment to the needs of individual patients, a knowledge of ethnic differences in anatomy and how aesthetic issues can be safely and effectively addressed in different groups is paramount.
Aims: To discuss similarities and difference in anatomy and treatment preferences of patients from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds and how these differences may influence the products or techniques utilized to achieve natural-looking results and minimize side effects.

Introduction: The periorbital region is susceptible to premature skin aging and among the first areas to manifest age-related changes. Retinoids are highly effective but can be irritating, limiting use in this vulnerable area. A hydrating formulation comprised of a double-conjugated retinoid/alpha hydroxy acid (lactic acid; AHARet-EM) has been developed to address photoaging of the periorbital area.

Organic materials are competitive as anodes for Na-ion batteries (NIBs) due to the low cost, abundance, environmental benignity, and high sustainability. Herein, we synthesized three halogenated carboxylate-based organic anode materials to exploit the impact of halogen atoms (F, Cl, and Br) on the electrochemical performance of carboxylate anodes in NIBs. The fluorinated carboxylate anode, disodium 2, 5-difluoroterephthalate (DFTP-Na), outperforms the other carboxylate anodes with H, Cl, and Br, in terms of high specific capacity (212 mA h g), long cycle life (300 cycles), and high rate capability (up to 5 A g).

Background: Some autoimmune diseases are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to determine whether or not this is true, and to what extent, for a broad range of autoimmune conditions.
Methods: In this population-based study, we used linked primary and secondary care records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), GOLD and Aurum datasets, to assemble a cohort of individuals across the UK who were newly diagnosed with any of 19 autoimmune diseases between Jan 1, 2000, and Dec 31, 2017, younger than 80 years at diagnosis, and free of cardiovascular diseases up to 12 months after diagnosis.
