The production of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the form of colloids has brought a paradigm shift in the design of new functional porous materials. Along with their intrinsic interest as porous solids, and contrary to their bulk powder counterparts, colloidal MOF particles can additionally be dispersed, shaped, functionalized, transformed and assembled in a controlled manner, conferring them further properties and applications. In this regard, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has become a pioneering MOF constituent of colloidal science.

Supramolecular isomerism of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is known for several MOF structures, having direct implications on the properties of these materials. Although the synthesis of MOF isomers is mainly serendipitous in nature, achieving controlled formation of a target framework is highly relevant for practical applications. This work discusses the influence of additives and synthesis conditions on the formation of porous isomers containing Zn as nodes and 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (dobdc) as a linker.

Controlling the structure sensitivity of catalyzed reactions over metals is central to developing atom-efficient chemical processes. Approaching the minimum ensemble size, the properties enter a non-scalable regime in which each atom counts. Almost all trends in this ultra-small frontier derive from surface science approaches using model systems, because of both synthetic and analytical challenges.

Solid-phase isothermal recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) offers many benefits over the standard RPA in homogeneous phase in terms of sensitivity, portability, and versatility. However, RPA devices reported to date are limited by the need for heating sources to reach sensitive detection. With the aim of overcoming such limitation, we propose here a label-free highly integrated in situ RPA amplification/detection approach at room temperature that takes advantage of the high sensitivity offered by gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-modified sensing substrates and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) detection.

Increasing the activity of the nitrogen reduction reaction while slowing the detrimental hydrogen evolution reaction is a key challenge in current electrocatalysis to provide a sustainable route to ammonia. Recently, nanoparticles in ionic liquid (IL) environments have been found to boost the selectivity of electrochemical synthesis of ammonia from dinitrogen at room temperature. Here, we use for the first time a fully atomistic representation of metal-IL interfaces at the density functional theory level to understand experimental evidence, with particular focus on the rate and selectivity determining formation of NH intermediates compared to hydrogen evolution.

Tristeza is one of the destructive diseases of citrus causing by citrus tristeza virus (CTV). Historically, CTV has been associated with serious outbreaks of quick decline of citrus, therefore CTV monitoring is important aspect for avoiding such re-emerging epidemics, which would threat citrus production through the world. In this context, we have designed for the first time a label-free impedimetric biosensor for the detection of nucleic acid of CTV.

Dirac materials such as graphene and topological insulators (TIs) are known to have unique electronic and spintronic properties. We combine graphene with TIs in van der Waals heterostructures to demonstrate the emergence of a strong proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling in graphene. By performing spin transport and precession measurements supported by ab initio simulations, we discover a strong tunability and suppression of the spin signal and spin lifetime due to the hybridization of graphene and TI electronic bands.

A crucial challenge in nanotherapies is achieving accurate and real-time control of the therapeutic action, which is particularly relevant in local thermal therapies to minimize healthy tissue damage and necrotic cell deaths. Here, a nanoheater/thermometry concept is presented based on magnetoplasmonic (Co/Au or Fe/Au) nanodomes that merge exceptionally efficient plasmonic heating and simultaneous highly sensitive detection of the temperature variations. The temperature detection is based on precise optical monitoring of the magnetic-induced rotation of the nanodomes in solution.

Simulations and theory suggest that the thermodynamic anomalies of water may be related to a phase transition between two supercooled liquid states, but so far this phase transition has not been observed experimentally because of preemptive ice crystallization. We used calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate a water-rich hydrazinium trifluoroacetate solution in which the local hydrogen bond structure surrounding a water molecule resembles that in neat water at elevated pressure, but which does not crystallize upon cooling. Instead, this solution underwent a sharp, reversible phase transition between two homogeneous liquid states.

N-doped reduced graphene oxide (RGO) has been prepared in bulk form by laser irradiation of graphene oxide (GO) dispersed in an aqueous solution of ammonia. A pulsed Nd:YAG laser with emission wavelengths in the infrared (IR) 1064 nm, visible (Vis) 532 nm, and ultraviolet (UV) 266 nm spectral regions was employed for the preparation of the N-doped RGO samples. Regardless of the laser energy employed, the resulting material presents a higher fraction of pyrrolic nitrogen compared to nitrogen atoms in pyridinic and graphitic coordination.

Ligand-modified palladium nanoparticles deposited on a carbon carrier efficiently catalyze the direct synthesis of H O and the unique performance is due to their hybrid nanostructure. Catalytic testing demonstrated that the selectivity increases with the HHDMA ligand content from 10 % for naked nanoparticles up to 80 %, rivalling that obtained with state-of-the-art bimetallic catalysts (HHDMA=C H NO P). Furthermore, it remains stable over five consecutive reaction runs owing to the high resistance towards leaching of the organic moiety, arising from its bond with the metal surface.

Infectious plant diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, viroids, phytoplasma and nematodes. Worldwide, plant pathogen infections are among main factors limiting crop productivity and increasing economic losses. Plant pathogen detection is important as first step to manage a plant disease in greenhouses, field conditions and at the country boarders.

A novel methodology for the isothermal amplification of Leishmania DNA using labeled primers combined with the advantages of magnetic purification/preconcentration and the use of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) tags for the sensitive electrochemical detection of such amplified DNA is developed. Primers labeled with AuNPs and magnetic beads (MBs) are used for the first time for the isothermal amplification reaction, being the amplified product ready for the electrochemical detection. The electrocatalytic activity of the AuNP tags toward the hydrogen evolution reaction allows the rapid quantification of the DNA on screen-printed carbon electrodes.
