Major depressive disorder is often comorbid with diabetes and associated with worse glycemic control. Exercise improves glycemic control and depression, and thus could be a parsimonious intervention for patients with comorbid diabetes and major depression. Because patients with diabetes and comorbid depression are often sedentary and lack motivation to exercise, we developed a group exercise intervention that integrates strategies from behavioral activation therapy for depression to increase motivation for and enjoyment of exercise.

Free Thyroxine During Early Pregnancy and Risk for Gestational Diabetes.

PLoS One

August 2016

Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, New York, United States of America.

Several studies have now reported associations between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and low free thyroxine (fT4) during the second and third trimesters, but not in the first trimester. The present study further examines relationships between low fT4, maternal weight, and GDM among women in the FaSTER (First and Second Trimester Evaluation of Risk) trial, in an effort to determine the extent to which thyroid hormones might contribute to causality. The FaSTER cohort includes 9351 singleton, euthyroid women; 272 of these women were subsequently classified as having GDM.

Grading of Prostate Cancer: Past, Present, and Future.

Curr Urol Rep

March 2016

Departments of Pathology, Urology and Oncology, Johns Hopkins Hospital, The Weinberg Building, Rm 2242, 401 N. Broadway Street, Baltimore, MD, 21231, USA.

The grading of prostate cancer has undergone significant changes since the adoption of the Gleason grading system in the 1970s. Gleason patterns 1 and 2 are no longer in use and the current Gleason score 6 of 10 is the lowest grade possible. Several specific morphologies that were historically considered Gleason grade 3 are currently assigned a Gleason pattern 4.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with increased morbidity across the cardiopulmonary disease spectrum. Based primarily on expert consensus opinion, PH is defined by a mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) ≥25 mm Hg. Although mPAP levels below this threshold are common among populations at risk for PH, the relevance of mPAP <25 mm Hg to clinical outcome is unknown.

Renal carcinoma associated with a novel succinate dehydrogenase A mutation: a case report and review of literature of a rare subtype of renal carcinoma.

Hum Pathol

December 2015

Departments of Pathology, Urology, and Oncology, The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD. Electronic address:

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) linked to germline mutation of succinate dehydrogenase subunits A, B, C, and D (SDHA, SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD, respectively) has been recently included as a provisional entity in the 2013 International Society of Urological Pathology Vancouver classification. Most SDH-deficient tumors show SDHB mutation, with only a small number of RCC with SDHC or SDHD having been reported to date. Only one case of SDH-deficient renal carcinoma known to be SDHA mutated has been previously reported.

Objective: Pain is not always correlated with severity of radiographic osteoarthritis (OA), possibly because people modify activities to manage symptoms. Measures of symptoms that consider pain in the context of activity level may therefore provide greater discrimination than a measure of pain alone. We undertook this study to compare discrimination provided by a measure of pain alone with that provided by combined measures of pain in the context of physical activity across radiographic OA severity levels.

Physiologic MRI for assessment of response to therapy and prognosis in glioblastoma.

Neuro Oncol

April 2016

Department of Radiology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California (M.S.S.); Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Rhode Island Hospital and Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island (J.L.B.); Department of Radiological Sciences, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles, California (W.B.P.).

Aside from bidimensional measurements from conventional contrast-enhanced MRI, there are no validated or FDA-qualified imaging biomarkers for high-grade gliomas. However, advanced functional MRI techniques, including perfusion- and diffusion-weighted MRI, have demonstrated much potential for determining prognosis, predicting therapeutic response, and assessing early treatment response. They may also prove useful for differentiating pseudoprogression from true progression after temozolomide chemoradiation and pseudoresponse from true response after anti-angiogenic therapy.

EGFR signaling in renal fibrosis.

Kidney Int Suppl (2011)

November 2014

Department of Nephrology, Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Signaling through the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is involved in regulation of multiple biological processes, including proliferation, metabolism, differentiation, and survival. Owing to its aberrant expression in a variety of malignant tumors, EGFR has been recognized as a target in anticancer therapy. Increasingly, evidence from animal studies indicates that EGFR signaling is also implicated in the development and progression of renal fibrosis.

Microbial cell walls contain pathogenic lipids, including LPS in gram-negative bacteria, lipoteichoic acid in gram-positive bacteria, and phospholipomannan in fungi. These pathogen lipids are major ligands for innate immune receptors and figure prominently in triggering the septic inflammatory response. Alternatively, pathogen lipids can be cleared and inactivated, thus limiting the inflammatory response.
