Background: We evaluated the associations of visit-to-visit blood pressure (BP) variability with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and deaths in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: We analyzed 4,152 participants in Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) free of CVD events and deaths during the first 36 months of follow-up. Variability of systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) across 4 annual visits was assessed using the intraindividual SD, variation independent of the mean, and coefficient of variation.

Survival and Pulmonary Injury After Neonatal Sepsis: PD1/PDL1's Contributions to Mouse and Human Immunopathology.

Morbidity and mortality associated with neonatal sepsis remains a healthcare crisis. PD1 neonatal mice endured experimental sepsis, in the form of cecal slurry (CS), and showed improved rates of survival compared to wildtype (WT) counterparts. End-organ injury, particularly of the lung, contributes to the devastation set forth by neonatal sepsis.

Rates of remission, sustained remission, and recurrence in a randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral therapy versus supportive psychotherapy for body dysmorphic disorder.

Background: Little data exist on remission rates following psychotherapy for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).

Methods: Using data from a large study of therapist-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) versus supportive psychotherapy (SPT) for BDD (N = 120), we estimated remission rates at treatment endpoint, and rates of delayed remission, sustained remission, and recurrence at 6-month follow-up. We also examined improvement in broader mental health outcomes among remitters.

Therapeutic Rationale for Endotoxin Removal with Polymyxin B Immobilized Fiber Column (PMX) for Septic Shock.

Endotoxin removal therapy with polymyxin B immobilized fiber column (PMX) has been clinically applied for sepsis and septic shock patients since 1994. The effectiveness and usefulness of this therapy have been demonstrated for more than a quarter of a century. However, a documented survival benefit has not yet been demonstrable in a large, multicenter, randomized and controlled trial.

Association of plasma adiponectin with pulmonary hypertension, mortality and heart failure in African Americans: Jackson Heart Study.

Background: Adiponectin is a polypeptide hormone related to obesity, and a known modulator of pulmonary vascular remodeling. Association between plasma adiponectin levels and pulmonary hypertension (PH) has not been studied in African Americans (AAs) who are disproportionately affected by obesity. The relationship between adiponectin and heart failure (HF) and mortality, outcomes associated with PH, is unclear.

IL-18 mediates sickle cell cardiomyopathy and ventricular arrhythmias.

Previous reports indicate that IL18 is a novel candidate gene for diastolic dysfunction in sickle cell disease (SCD)-related cardiomyopathy. We hypothesize that interleukin-18 (IL-18) mediates the development of cardiomyopathy and ventricular tachycardia (VT) in SCD. Compared with control mice, a humanized mouse model of SCD exhibited increased cardiac fibrosis, prolonged duration of action potential, higher VT inducibility in vivo, higher cardiac NF-κB phosphorylation, and higher circulating IL-18 levels, as well as reduced voltage-gated potassium channel expression, which translates to reduced transient outward potassium current (Ito) in isolated cardiomyocytes.

Evaluation of a convolutional neural network for ovarian tumor differentiation based on magnetic resonance imaging.

Objectives: There currently lacks a noninvasive and accurate method to distinguish benign and malignant ovarian lesion prior to treatment. This study developed a deep learning algorithm that distinguishes benign from malignant ovarian lesion by applying a convolutional neural network on routine MR imaging.

Methods: Five hundred forty-five lesions (379 benign and 166 malignant) from 451 patients from a single institution were divided into training, validation, and testing set in a 7:2:1 ratio.

Application of the actor-partner interdependence model in parent-adolescent emotion regulation and depression.

Background: The family environment is an important context for the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms within families. In this study, we evaluated whether parent and adolescent self-reports of emotion regulation constructs are linked with their own (actor effects) and each other's (partner effects) depressive symptoms.

Methods: Participants were 123 adolescent-parent dyads, recruited from adolescent inpatient and partial hospitalization programs, who completed self-report assessments of emotion dysregulation and depression.

Human Cardiac Fibroblast Number and Activation State Modulate Electromechanical Function of hiPSC-Cardiomyocytes in Engineered Myocardium.

Cardiac tissue engineering using hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes is a promising avenue for cardiovascular regeneration, pharmaceutical drug development, cardiotoxicity evaluation, and disease modeling. Limitations to these applications still exist due in part to the need for more robust structural support, organization, and electromechanical function of engineered cardiac tissues. It is well accepted that heterotypic cellular interactions impact the phenotype of cardiomyocytes.

Myocardial Steatosis Among Antiretroviral Therapy-Treated People With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Participating in the REPRIEVE Trial.

Background: People with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH) face increased risks for heart failure and adverse heart failure outcomes. Myocardial steatosis predisposes to diastolic dysfunction, a heart failure precursor. We aimed to characterize myocardial steatosis and associated potential risk factors among a subset of the Randomized Trial to Prevent Vascular Events in HIV (REPRIEVE) participants.

Evaluating the Use of rCBV as a Tumor Grade and Treatment Response Classifier Across NCI Quantitative Imaging Network Sites: Part II of the DSC-MRI Digital Reference Object (DRO) Challenge.

We have previously characterized the reproducibility of brain tumor relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) using a dynamic susceptibility contrast magnetic resonance imaging digital reference object across 12 sites using a range of imaging protocols and software platforms. As expected, reproducibility was highest when imaging protocols and software were consistent, but decreased when they were variable. Our goal in this study was to determine the impact of rCBV reproducibility for tumor grade and treatment response classification.

Mechanisms of Change in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is highly efficacious for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), not all patients benefit, and mechanisms underlying response remain unknown. In this first report of the mechanisms underlying improvement with CBT for BDD, we examined whether cognitive (maladaptive beliefs, perfectionism, schemas) and behavioral (checking, grooming, avoidance behaviors) changes mediate the effect of CBT on BDD symptom reduction. Forty-five participants with BDD who enrolled in a CBT for BDD treatment development study were included in two sets of analyses: (1) between-subject mediation of the effect of 12 weeks of CBT versus waitlist, and (2) within-subject mediation of longitudinal change in BDD symptom severity during 24 weeks of CBT.

Reconstructed Apoptotic Bodies as Targeted "Nano Decoys" to Treat Intracellular Bacterial Infections within Macrophages and Cancer Cells.

() is a highly pathogenic facultative anaerobe that in some instances resides as an intracellular bacterium within macrophages and cancer cells. This pathogen can establish secondary infection foci, resulting in recurrent systemic infections that are difficult to treat using systemic antibiotics. Here, we use reconstructed apoptotic bodies (ReApoBds) derived from cancer cells as "nano decoys" to deliver vancomycin intracellularly to kill by targeting inherent "eat me" signaling of ApoBds.

Evaluation of RAPNO criteria in medulloblastoma and other leptomeningeal seeding tumors using MRI and clinical data.

Background: Although the Response Assessment in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology (RAPNO) working group has made recommendations for response assessment in patients with medulloblastoma (MBL) and leptomeningeal seeding tumors, these criteria have yet to be evaluated.

Methods: We examined MR imaging and clinical data in a multicenter retrospective cohort of 269 patients with MBL diagnoses, high grade glioma, embryonal tumor, germ cell tumor, or choroid plexus papilloma. Interobserver agreement, objective response (OR) rates, and progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated.

Transmission Risk Among Youth Living With HIV in the U.S.

Purpose: HIV treatment as prevention is effective for reducing the risk of HIV transmission and the messaging campaign, undetectable = untransmittable, is gaining recognition. As youth living with HIV (YLWH) who have condomless sex may acquire and potentially transmit other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the purpose of this study was to assess potential differences in transmission risk of HIV and other STIs among YLWH to inform subsequent HIV and STI prevention efforts.

Methods: A cohort of 600 HIV behaviorally infected youth aged 13-24 years who were engaged in medical care completed an audio computer-assisted self-interview including questions about demographics, HIV disclosure, mental health, substance use, and sexual behaviors and beliefs.

Racial/ethnic disparities in sleep duration and sleep disturbances among pregnant and non-pregnant women in the United States.

Sleep disturbances among pregnant women are increasingly linked to suboptimal maternal/birth outcomes. Few studies in the USA investigating sleep by pregnancy status have included racially/ethnically diverse populations, despite worsening disparities in adverse birth outcomes. Using a nationally representative sample of 71,644 (2,349 pregnant) women from the National Health Interview Survey (2004-2017), we investigated relationships between self-reported pregnancy and six sleep characteristics stratified by race/ethnicity.

Effect of Best Practice Advisories on Sedation Protocol Compliance and Drug-Related Hazardous Condition Mitigation Among Critical Care Patients.

Endovascular Revascularization of Superficial Femoral Artery Stent Occlusion by Combined Retrograde Access With Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis and Pharmaco-Mechanical Thrombectomy.

We report a case of a patient with history of peripheral arterial disease who presented to the hospital with critical limb ischemia. We performed endovascular revascularization of stent thrombosis in superficial femoral artery (SFA), by retrograde pedal access with wire exteriorization. This case highlights the utility of retrograde pedal access in failed antegrade approach of culprit lesion in SFA and the effectiveness of multimodal endovascular thrombectomy to restore blood flow in patients who are otherwise not suitable for surgical interventions.

Evidence that Swimming May Be Protective of Knee Osteoarthritis: Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative.

Background: To date, there have not been any epidemiologic studies that have evaluated the association between swimming over a lifetime and knee health.

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the relationship of a history of swimming with knee pain, radiographic knee OA (ROA), and symptomatic knee OA (SOA).

Design: Cross-sectional retrospective study.
