Toxic Effects of Butanol in the Plane of the Cell Membrane.

Solvent toxicity limits -butanol fermentation titer, increasing the cost and energy consumption for subsequent separation processes and making biobased production more expensive and energy-intensive than petrochemical approaches. Amphiphilic solvents such as -butanol partition into the cell membrane of fermenting microorganisms, thinning the transverse structure, and eventually causing a loss of membrane potential and cell death. In this work, we demonstrate the deleterious effects of -butanol partitioning upon the lateral dimension of the membrane structure, called membrane domains or lipid rafts.

Scale invariance in early embryonic development.

The expression of a few key genes determines the body plan of the fruit fly. We show that the spatial expression patterns for several of these genes scale precisely with embryo size. Discrete positional markers such as the peaks in striped patterns or the boundaries of expression domains have positions along the embryo's major axis proportional to embryo length, accurate to within 1%.

Background: Endometriosis, due to its ambiguous symptoms, still remains one of the most difficult female diseases to treat, with an average diagnosis time of 7-9 years. The changing level of hypoxia plays an important role in a healthy endometrium during menstruation and an elevated expression of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) has been demonstrated in ectopic endometria. HIF-1α mediates the induction of proangiogenic factors and the development of angiogenesis is a critical step in the establishment and pathogenesis of endometriosis.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a known lung carcinogen and a driving mechanism in human lung cells for Cr(VI)-induced lung cancer is chromosome instability, caused by prolonged Cr(VI) exposure inducing DNA double-strand breaks, while simultaneously inhibiting the repair of these breaks. In North Atlantic right whales, Cr(VI) induces breaks but does not inhibit repair. It is unclear if this repair inhibition is specific to human lung cells or occurs in other species, as it has only been considered in humans and North Atlantic right whales.
