Large or complex bone fractures often need clinical treatments for sufficient bone repair. New treatment strategies have pursued the idea of using mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in combination with osteoinductive materials to guide differentiation of MSCs into bone cells ensuring complete bone regeneration. To overcome the challenge of developing such materials, fundamental studies are needed to analyze and understand the MSC behavior on modified surfaces of applicable materials for bone healing.

In this work, high-temperature-resistant phosphate molecules are applied to characterize ultrathin (100 nm) calcium silicate (C-S) phases. These C-S phases are synthesized on silicon wafers, and the interaction of phosphates with the C-S phases is studied by means of in situ transmission Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. At room temperature, the chemistry of the system is dominated by the formation of calcium phosphates (C-P).

Three bentonites of varying smectite content were investigated by dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range 10(-4) to 10(6) Hz after storage at well-defined humidities. The identification of relaxation processes from complex permittivity measurements was difficult, since conductivity effects were superimposed on the underlying relaxations. Relaxation peaks revealed by the dissipation factor indicated the occurrence of interfacial processes between 10(2) and 10(6) Hz.
