Urology

August 2024

Departments of Urology, Sheba Tel-Hashomer Medical Center, Ramat-Gan, Affiliated to Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv. Electronic address:

Pediatric renal sarcomas are exceedingly rare entities that present diagnostic challenges. We report a remarkable case of a 14-month-old female with an 8 cm right renal mass, accompanied by disseminated bone metastases, posing intricate clinical and histopathological dilemmas. Initial suspicion leaned towards clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK), however, subsequent histological examination post-chemotherapy revealed high-grade osteosarcoma and further differential considerations arose, including primary renal osteosarcoma and osseous osteosarcoma with secondary renal involvement.

Single arterial access technique for simultaneous dual mechanical circulatory support in cardiogenic shock.

J Cardiothorac Surg

February 2024

Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC), Augustenburger Platz 1, 13353, Berlin, Germany.

Temporary mechanical circulatory support is a treatment of choice for patients in severe cardiogenic shock. Combining veno-arterial extracorporeal life support (ECLS) with devices that enable left ventricular unloading emerges as a promising strategy to diminish detrimental effect of elevated left ventricular afterload and to improve survival. However, the need to establish multiple arterial access sites remains a major drawback of this approach due to a significant rate of vascular complications.

Distal nerve transfer is a refined surgical technique involving the redirection of healthy sacrificable nerves from one part of the body to reinstate function in another area afflicted by paralysis or injury. This approach is particularly valuable when the original nerves are extensively damaged and standard repair methods, such as direct suturing or grafting, may be insufficient. As the nerve coaptation is close to the recipient muscles or skin, distal nerve transfers reduce the time to reinnervation.

Neurobiological perspective on the development of executive functions.

Acta Paediatr

September 2023

Department of Pediatrics, Shamir Medical Center affiliated to Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Executive functions are a set of top-down cognitive processes necessary for emotional self-regulation and goal-directed behaviour supporting, among others, academic abilities. Premature infants are at high risk for subsequent cognitive, psychosocial, or behavioural problems even in the absence of medical complications and in spite of normal brain imaging. Given that this is a sensitive period of brain growth and maturation, these factors may place preterm infants at high risk for executive function dysfunction, disrupted long-term development, and lower academic achievements.

Sexually dimorphic anthropometric measurements in patients with hypospadias and cryptorchidism.

Anthropol Anz

April 2023

Department of Urology, Shamir Medical Center, affiliated to Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Inappropriate exposure or activity of sex hormones in-utero has been postulated as a leading cause for the development of hypospadias and cryptorchidism. Anthropometric sexually dimorphic traits such as the 2 to 4 digit ratio (2D:4D), anogenital distance (AGD) and the stretched penile length (SPL), have been associated with androgen and estrogen activity in-utero. Evaluate anthropometric parameters in patients with hypospadias or cryptorchidism compared with healthy controls.
