Background: Findings from numerous studies have revealed that ferroptosis is closely related to tumorigenesis and immune cell infiltration. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are reportedly involved in the progression of various cancers, including prostate cancer (PCa). This study was designed to establish a ferroptosis-related lncRNA (frlncRNA) signature to predict PCa prognosis.

Background: Body mass index (BMI) is a vital risk factor for kidney stones, but physical activity may reduce the incidence of kidney stones. However, it remains unknown whether physical activity reduces the effect of high BMI on kidney stones in diabetes participants.

Methods: We included clinical information from 4,008 adult participants with diabetes from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2007 to 2018.

Introduction: S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) is a neurotrophic factor that regulates neuronal growth and plasticity by activating astrocytes and microglia through the production of cytokines involved in Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). However, few studies have combined S100B and cytokines to explore their role as neuro-inflammatory biomarkers in GAD.

Methods: Serum S100B and cytokines (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10) of 108 untreated GAD cases and 123 healthy controls (HC) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) scores and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores were measured to evaluate anxiety and depression severity.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been demonstrated to play vital roles in cancer development and progression. However, studies on the association between circRNAs and prostate cancer (PCa) are still lacking. CircRNA sequencing of two pairs of PCa tissues and adjacent normal tissues was conducted in the present study, and qRT-PCR was performed to verify the results.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is one of the most common malignant kidney tumors with a poor prognosis. Accumulating evidence proves that zinc finger protein 268 (ZNF268) is associated with tumor progression, but the detailed regulatory functions of ZNF268 in ccRCC require further exploration. Thus, here we aim to characterize the role of ZNF268 in ccRCC.

Background: Due to the unique anatomy and complex function of the penis, the reconstruction of penile defect is fraught with great challenges. The current standard methods are limited by numerous complications and insufficient donor sites. While functional vascularized penile tissue engineering offers a novel way to address this problem, revascularization remains the primary concern.

The DIRECT consortium and the REST-meta-MDD project: towards neuroimaging biomarkers of major depressive disorder.

Psychoradiology

March 2022

CAS Key Laboratory of Behavioral Science, Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Despite advancements in neuroimaging research on major depressive disorder (MDD), findings remain inconsistent due to small sample sizes and varying analysis methods, prompting the launch of the Depression Imaging REsearch ConsorTium (DIRECT) and the REST-meta-MDD project, which pooled data from 2,428 functional brain images.
  • The initial analyses revealed significant changes in brain connectivity and dynamics, laying the groundwork for future research and highlighting the need for more comprehensive studies across diverse populations.
  • DIRECT's second phase aims to broaden the investigation of brain alterations in MDD by including various ethnic groups and other mental health disorders, while also focusing on long-term studies of treatment effects and improving neuroimaging methodologies for clinical applications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which is key in reward processing and its role in major depressive disorder (MDD).
  • Through meta- and mega-analysis of resting-state fMRI data, it was found that patients with recurrent MDD exhibited decreased functional connectivity within the NAc-based reward circuits.
  • The research highlights that disrupted connectivity between the reward network and the default mode network (DMN) may aid in differentiating MDD patients from healthy individuals, suggesting potential biomarkers for diagnosis.

A new emerging target in cancer immunotherapy: Galectin-9 (LGALS9).

Genes Dis

November 2023

The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu Cancer Hospital, Jiangsu Institute of Cancer Research, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210009, China.

Over the past few decades, advances in immunological knowledge have led to the identification of novel immune checkpoints, reinvigorating cancer immunotherapy. Immunotherapy, represented by immune checkpoint inhibitors, has become the leader in the precision treatment of cancer, bringing a new dawn to the treatment of most cancer patients. Galectin-9 (LGALS9), a member of the galectin family, is a widely expressed protein involved in immune regulation and tumor pathogenesis, and affects the prognosis of various types of cancer.

Affiliated Zhongda Hospital of Southeast University, Southeast University, 87 Dingjia Bridge Hunan Road, Nanjing, China; Binhai People's Hospital, Yancheng, China. Electronic address:

Objective: Sunitinib is a first-line drug in the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma, but patients will inevitably develop drug resistance after 6-15 months of systematic treatment, which seriously affects the prognosis in KIRC.

Methods: During the study, the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to perform a systematic bioinformatics analysis,so that we could determine the genes (DEGs) which are differentially expressed between sunitinib-sensitive and sunitinib-resistant RCC (SRRC) cells.

Results: A total of 31 DEGs were identified.

The rapid development of multiple high-throughput sequencing technologies has made it possible to explore the critical roles and mechanisms of functional enhancers and enhancer RNAs (eRNAs). The inflammatory immune response, as a fundamental pathological process in infectious diseases, cancers and immune disorders, coordinates the balance between the internal and external environment of the organism. It has been shown that both active enhancers and intranuclear eRNAs are preferentially expressed over inflammation-related genes in response to inflammatory stimuli, suggesting that enhancer transcription events and their products influence the expression and function of inflammatory genes.
