The possible cooperation between hypnotizability-related and placebo mechanisms in pain modulation has not been consistently assessed. Here, we investigate possible genetic bases for such cooperation. The OPRM1 gene, which encodes the μ1 opioid receptor-the primary site of action for endogenous and exogenous opioids-is polymorphic in the general population for the missense mutation Asn40Asp (A118G, rs1799971).

High hypnotizability is associated with left-sided cerebral asymmetry, which could influence measurement of the Peripersonal Space (PPS). Right-handed participants with high (highs, n = 20), medium (mediums, n = 9), and low hypnotizability scores (lows, n = 20) performed the line bisection test on a computer screen automatically displaced at distances of 30, 60, and 90 cm from the subjects' eyes. Highs' results showed rightward bias of the bisection (Relative Error, RE) for all presentation distances.

The aim of this article is to complement the recently revised American Psychological Association (APA) definition of hypnotizability. It (a) lists a few differences in sensorimotor integration between subjects with high (highs) and low (lows) hypnotizability scores in the ordinary state of consciousness and in the absence of suggestions, (b) proposes that hypnotizability-related cerebellar peculiarities may account for them,

Earlier studies have shown hypnotizability-related postural effects of visual suppression and of leg and neck proprioceptive alteration. This study completes this investigation by demonstrating the postural effects of asymmetric tactile foot stimulation in standing participants with different hypnotizability scores. During this stimulation, body sway changed in medium-to-high more than in low-to-medium hypnotizable participants.

Abstract In the general population, suppression of vision modulates body sway by increasing the center of pressure (CoP) velocity, while a light fingertip touch reduces the area of the CoP displacement in blindfolded subjects. This study assessed whether imagined fixation and fingertip touch differentially stabilize posture in subjects with high (highs) and low (lows) hypnotizability. Visual and tactile imageries were ineffective in lows.

Growth factors and folliculogenesis in polycystic ovary patients.

Ovarian folliculogenesis is regulated by a fine balance between endocrine and intraovarian factors. In this review, we focus on the role of growth factors in physiological folliculogenesis and in polycystic ovaries. Recent evidence shows that the main systems implicated in polycystic ovary folliculogenesis are the growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor system, vascular endothelial growth factor, and the transforming growth factor-β family.

Novel targeted therapies in epithelial ovarian cancer: from basic research to the clinic.

Expert Rev Endocrinol Metab

March 2007

c University of Pisa, Department of Procreative Medicine, Division of Gynecology & Obstetrics, Via Roma 56, Pisa, 56127, Italy.

The development of new molecularly targeted therapies represents a high priority for the treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer. P-glycoprotein overexpression has been associated with multidrug resistance, and the use of multidrug resistance modulators, such as valspodar, is being explored in combination with chemotherapy. Human epidermal receptor (HER) family members are attractive targets for biological therapies.
