Aphasia is commonly seen in focal brain lesions. Prolonged aphasia from an ictal state is rarely reported. We report the case of a 62-year-old man with focal motor status epilepticus manifested initially as episodic right cheiro-oral clonic movements with preserved awareness and expressive aphasia for 48 hours.

This study was conducted to evaluate predictive factors of diabetes-related emergency room (ER) visits and hospitalizations among adolescents and young adults (AYA) with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Baseline demographic, medical, and psychosocial variables were collected for 177 AYA with T1D. Medical records were reviewed to identify ER visits and hospitalizations related to diabetes.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can produce adverse outcomes; maternal smoking compounds this risk. We examined prevalence of smoking and associations between smoking and alcohol use in Russian women of childbearing age ( = 648). Smoking was reported by 35% of nonpregnant and 14% of pregnant women.

Lynparza and its companion diagnostic test, BRACAnalysis were approved by the US FDA in December 2014 for recurrent ovarian cancer in women with a germline BRCA mutation. Women with a deleterious BRCA mutation are predisposed to ovarian cancer due to deficient homologous recombination repair. Inhibition of the PARP enzyme forces use of an alternate error-prone pathway for repair; PARP trapping is another mechanism utilized that blocks cellular replication by trapping inactivated PARP onto single-stranded DNA breaks.
