Nonlinear mixed-effects (NLME) models are used when analyzing continuous repeated measures data taken on each of a number of individuals where the focus is on characteristics of complex, nonlinear individual change. Challenges with fitting NLME models and interpreting analytic results have been well documented in the statistical literature. However, parameter estimates as well as fitted functions from NLME analyses in recent articles have been misinterpreted, suggesting the need for clarification of these issues before these misconceptions become fact.

Reaching toward an object usually consists of a sequence of elemental actions. Using a reaching task sequence, the authors investigated how task elements of that sequence affected feedforward and feedback components of the reaching phase of the movement. Protective clothing for pesticide operators: part II--data analysis of fabric characteristics.

Development of objective measurements is an important requirement for establishing performance-based standards for protective clothing used while handling pesticide. This study, the second in a two-part series, reports on the work completed to evaluate the performance of approximately 100 fabrics that are either used or have the potential to be used for garments worn by operators while applying pesticides. Part I, published separately, provides an overview of these issues and describes research undertaken to select a test chemical for use in subsequent studies.

Ankle Accelerometry for Assessing Physical Activity Among Adolescent Girls: Threshold Determination, Validity, Reliability, and Feasibility.

Purpose: Ankle accelerometry allows for 24-hr data collection and improves data volume/integrity versus hip accelerometry. Using Actical ankle accelerometry, the purpose of this study was to (a) develop sensitive/specific thresholds, (b) examine validity/reliability, (c) compare new thresholds with those of the manufacturer, and (d) examine feasibility in a community sample (low-income, urban adolescent girls).

Method: Two studies were conducted with 6th- through 7th-grade girls (aged 10-14 years old): First was a laboratory study (n = 24), in which 2 Actical accelerometers were placed on the ankle and worn while measuring energy expenditure (Cosmed K4b2, metabolic equivalents [METs]) during 10 prescribed activities.

A Qualitative Description of a Family Intervention for Breast Cancer Survivors Experiencing Fatigue.

Breast cancer survivors commonly experience fatigue, but family-focused interventions as a means to reduce fatigue are understudied. This qualitative study explored the experience of adding a family component to a multimodal group intervention for fatigue. Data were collected from group observations, in-depth interviews, and debriefing sessions with the program social worker.

Impact of a comprehensive pharmacist medication-therapy management service.

Objective: This proof of concept study aimed to determine whether a pharmacist-managed medication therapy management (MTM) program in a private endocrinologist physician's practice reduced healthcare services utilization and related costs 6 months after patients' discharge from an institution with a transition of care service.

Methods: Patients were included in the study if they were English-speaking, ages >18 years, had type 1 or 2 diabetes, and had a recent transition of care experience (inpatient hospital stay or emergency department/urgent care/paramedic or other acute care visit). The study had a non-randomized design where intervention patients, enrolled July 1, 2012-September 30, 2013, were administered MTM at four visits over 6 months and were compared to historical control patients with available electronic medical records from August 8, 2008 to March 15, 2012.

A code of ethics for health care ethics consultants: journey to the present and implications for the field.

For decades a debate has played out in the literature about who bioethicists are, what they do, whether they can be considered professionals qua bioethicists, and, if so, what professional responsibilities they are called to uphold. Health care ethics consultants are bioethicists who work in health care settings. They have been seeking guidance documents that speak to their special relationships/duties toward those they serve.

Assessing the factor structure of well-being in older adults: findings from the National Health and Aging Trends Study.

Objectives: Well-being has been conceptualized as a two-dimensional construct that includes both hedonic and eudaimonic components. To date, existing measures of well-being may not adequately capture both of these components for older adults, and limited literature has explored whether the two constructs can be integrated into one factor to measure well-being in this population.

Method: This study examined the factor structure of the 11 well-being items from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a nationally representative panel study of Medicare recipients in the US.

Patterns in adult sibling relationships after the death of one or both parents.

The authors explored how sibling relationships were affected by the death of one or both parents in the context of the dynamics of those sibling relationships prior to the death. Qualitative data obtained from 66 interviews in a mixed-methods study of adults in middle or older age with at least one living sibling were analyzed for the purpose of finding common patterns that emerged after the death. The patterns were: Even closer; Just us now; New roles, responsibilities, and relationships; Unsettled estate; Never close; From bad to worse; Back together, temporarily; and No change.

How we started an elective in emergency bedside ultrasound.

The expanding use of bedside ultrasonography in the practice of emergency medicine and other specialties is accompanied by the need to train medical students in its applications and interpretation of its results. In this article, the authors describe their successful design, launch, and management of the ultrasound elective at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Because the course has been so well received, the authors are now exploring ways of presenting its content and skills-building opportunities in more venues, including the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course.

The objectives of this pilot study were to: (1) characterize periphyton and benthic communities using standard collection methods in six Midwest watersheds with varying historical levels of atrazine (low range, medium range and upper range); (2) qualitatively assess presence of aquatic vascular plants at each site; (3) assess and compare physical habitat at each study site in order to evaluate how physical habitat structure may influence the biological communities and (4) analyze the periphyton and benthic macroinvertebrate community data (i.e., series of metrics) among sites to evaluate possible differences or similarities among sites with different historical atrazine exposures.

Hemispheric differences in the processing of words learned early versus later in childhood.

The research investigated whether there are hemispheric differences in processing for words acquired early in childhood (early AoA) and words acquired later in childhood (late AoA). We hypothesized that because of recent evidence suggesting that there is a right hemisphere dominance in early childhood, early AoA words would be represented in the right hemisphere, and late AoA words would be represented in the left hemisphere. This hypothesis differs from an early view that late AoA words would be represented in the left hemisphere, and early AoA words would be represented in both hemispheres (Gazzaniga, 1974).
