Mutations in RPS19 may affect ribosome function and biogenesis in Diamond Blackfan anemia.

Ribosomes, the cellular organelles translating the genetic code to proteins, are assemblies of RNA chains and many proteins (RPs) arranged in precise fine-tuned interwoven structures. Mutated ribosomal genes cause ribosomopathies, including Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA, a rare heterogeneous red-cell aplasia connected to ribosome malfunction) or failed biogenesis. Combined bioinformatical, structural, and predictive analyses of potential consequences of possibly expressed mutations in eS19, the protein product of the highly mutated RPS19, suggest that mutations in its exposed surface could alter its positioning during assembly and consequently prevent biogenesis, implying a natural selective strategy to avoid malfunctions in ribosome assembly.

Physiological Differences Between Heat Tolerant and Heat Intolerant Young Healthy Women.

 Heat intolerance (HI) is determined in the Israel Defense Force according to a heat tolerance test (HTT) before returning to duty after an exertional heat stroke (EHS) event. Recently, increased numbers of female combatants resulted in an increased number of EHS cases among women and a higher percentage of heat intolerance (HI) individuals. We aimed to evaluate the differences between tolerance to heat among women performing an HTT in relation to their menstrual cycle phase.

Distribution of 13-Valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine serotype streptococcus pneumoniae in adults 50 Years and Older presenting with community-acquired pneumonia in Israel.

Background: Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and is a leading cause of hospitalization in previously healthy individuals without predisposing risk factors or comorbidities. In this study we determined PCV13 serotype distribution in adults aged ≥50 years with radiographically confirmed CAP in Israel.

Methods: Subjects aged ≥50 years were enrolled from one of three hospitals (Emek Medical Center, Meir Medical Center and Sheba Medical Center) from March 2014 to July 2015.

Anxiety and support resources for Israeli women before gynecological surgery.

Gynecologic surgery is a frequent procedure for benign and malignant diseases and may evoke anxiety and a need for support. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether women with suspicion of gynecologic malignancy and those with no suspicion of gynecologic malignancy had different sources of social support and the relationship between this support and their anxiety. A descriptive cross-sectional method was used at a large medical center.

A Surprising Cause for Corneal Edema after Cataract Surgery: A Missed Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Haptic Remnant.

We present a case of retained intraocular lens (IOL) haptic segment in the anterior chamber, diagnosed seven months following a reportedly uneventful cataract surgery due to manifestation of inferior corneal edema. Specular microscopy revealed low endothelial counts of 513/mm(2). Upon diagnosis, prompt surgical removal of the IOL haptic segment resulted in rapid resolution of the corneal edema within a week.
