August 2024

Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care, Karolinska Institutet, Huddinge, Sweden.

Background: Many individuals with hypertension remain undiagnosed. We aimed to develop a predictive model for hypertension using diagnostic codes from prevailing electronic medical records in Swedish primary care.

Methods: This sex- and age-matched case-control (1:5) study included patients aged 30-65 years living in the Stockholm Region, Sweden, with a newly recorded diagnosis of hypertension during 2010-19 (cases) and individuals without a recorded hypertension diagnosis during 2010-19 (controls), in total 507,618 individuals.

December 2024

Department of Sports Medicine, Norwegian School of Sports Sciences, Oslo, Norway; Department of Chronic Diseases and Ageing, Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Oslo, Norway.

Introduction: It is unclear whether moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is associated with a lower mortality risk, over and above its contribution to total physical activity volume.

Methods: 46,682 adults (mean age: 64 years) were included in a meta-analysis of nine prospective cohort studies. Each cohort generated tertiles of accelerometry-measured physical activity volume and volume-adjusted MVPA.

Introduction: After radical cystectomy physical activity is important to reduce risk of complications, but patients with urinary bladder cancer have difficulties in achieving general recommendations on physical activity and exercise. The aim of this randomised controlled trial was therefore to evaluate the effects of a physical exercise programme in primary care, following discharge from hospital after robot-assisted radical cystectomy for urinary bladder cancer.

Materials And Methods: Patients with urinary bladder cancer scheduled for robot-assisted radical cystectomy at Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden between September 2019 and October 2022 were invited to join the study.

October 2024

Department of Medicine Solna, Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Karolinska Institute and Clinical Pharmacology, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background: Age is a major risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death, but there has been a debate about benefit-risk of statin treatment in the elderly with limited evidence on benefits for primary prevention, while there is strong evidence for its use in secondary prevention.

Aim: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of statin utilization in primary and secondary prevention for patients 75-84 years and ≥ 85 years in the Swedish capital Region Stockholm in 2019.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study based on the regional healthcare database VAL containing all diagnoses and dispensed prescription drugs for all 174,950 inhabitants ≥ 75 years old in the Stockholm Region.

  • The Nordic countries liberalized abortion laws in the 1970s, leading to increased surveillance and national abortion registers for better data collection.
  • Initially, abortion rates rose but later stabilized and decreased, particularly among women under 25, with a shift toward earlier terminations primarily through medical means.
  • Advances in ultrasound and prenatal diagnostics contributed to a slight increase in early 2nd trimester abortions, while country-specific differences in abortion rates have remained consistent over the last 50 years.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the third most common type of cardiovascular disease. An association between high level of physical activity (PA) and the onset of VTE has been found in some, but not all previous studies. We aim to study the association between PA-level and VTE in a cohort of men with updated data on PA levels at four occasions.
