Naming impairments evoked by focal cortical electrical stimulation in the ventral temporal cortex correlate with increased functional connectivity.

Neurophysiol Clin

August 2022

Department of Neurology, University Hospital of Nancy, Lorraine University, F-54000 Nancy, France; Research Center for Automatic Control of Nancy (CRAN), Lorraine University, CNRS, UMR, 7039 Vandoeuvre, France.

Background: High-frequency cortical electrical stimulations (HF-CES) are the gold standard for presurgical functional mapping. In the dominant ventral temporal cortex (VTC) HF-CES can elicit transient naming impairment (eloquent sites), defining a basal temporal language area (BTLA).

Objective: Whether naming impairments induced by HF-CES within the VTC are related to a specific pattern of connectivity of the BTLA within the temporal lobe remains unknown.

Cross validation is a useful way of comparing predictive generalizability of theoretically plausible a priori models in structural equation modeling (SEM). A number of overall or local cross validation indices have been proposed for existing factor-based and component-based approaches to SEM, including covariance structure analysis and partial least squares path modeling. However, there is no such cross validation index available for generalized structured component analysis (GSCA) which is another component-based approach.

In recent years, the prevalence of infertility has increased due to delayed childbearing and an increase in the rate of male infertility. Given the high cost of fertility treatment, this option is not valid for families with a low income, and those who can afford it usually choose to have multiple embryo transfer, which has led to an increase in multiple birth rates and an increase in the cost of perinatal care. Due to the expected increase in infertility and decrease in the national live birth rate, the US should set a plan to fund infertility treatment and lead a policy for single embryo transfer.

Expert Opin Investig Drugs

December 2018

a McGill University AIDS Centre , Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal , Canada.

Introduction: The Zika virus (ZIKV) infection results in severe neurological complications and has emerged as a threat to public health worldwide. No drugs or vaccines are available for use in the clinic and the need for novel and effective therapeutic agents is urgent.

Areas Covered: This review describes the latest progress of antiviral development for the treatment of ZIKV infection; it primarily focuses on the literature describing 20 potential anti-ZIKV drugs/agents currently being tested in vivo or in clinical trials.

Drug adherence has been a recurring issue in the field of HIV treatment, and low treatment adherence is typically associated with emergence of drug resistance, treatment failure and increased risks of transmission. Injectable antiretroviral drugs offer a unique opportunity to counter this issue for the treatment of HIV-positive individuals. In addition, injectables offer a remarkable opportunity to reduce new HIV infections, if applied in the context of both treatment-as-prevention and pre-exposure prophylaxis.

Hypnosis predates psychoanalysis, when autohypnotic pathologies were identified through the lens of hypnosis, and labeled "hypnoid hysteria" in the language of the day. The broad spectrum of disorders then subsumed under that term is still reflected in ICD-10's subset, "F44-Dissociative (Conversion) Disorders." Freud initially embraced both hypnoid hysteria and hypnosis, but came to abandon hypnosis and, by extension, hypnoid hysteria as well.

Routine assessment of unmet needs in individuals with advanced cancer and their caregivers: A qualitative study of the palliative care needs assessment tool (PC-NAT).

J Psychosoc Oncol

August 2019

c UNSW Medicine, South Western Sydney Clinical School, Psycho-oncology Research Group, Centre for Oncology Education and Research Translation (CONCERT) , Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, Liverpool , NSW , Australia.

Purpose: To examine (1) approaches used by oncologists to administer the palliative care needs assessment tool (PC-NAT) in consultations with patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers, (2) potential of this tool to facilitate discussion of psychosocial issues, and (3) whether use of the tool alters the length of consultations.

Design: A qualitative analysis was undertaken of audio-taped, outpatient consultations.

Sample And Methods: 20 individuals with advanced cancer and their caregivers who participated in an interrupted time series study of the impact of the systematic utilization of the PC-NAT had a total of 48 consultations audio-taped.

Aboriginal women in urban areas have been reported to experience high rates of poverty, homelessness, interpersonal violence, and health problems. However, there are few prior ethnocultural comparisons of urban women from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. The current study explored the mental and physical health of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women accessing social services agencies and shelters.

Quantitative evidence about the burden of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) needs to be complemented with a nuanced qualitative understanding of explanatory models to help supplement public health strategies that are too often steeped uncritically in biomedical models. The aim of this study was to identify the role of various factors in the onset and persistence of AUD and recovery from AUD. This was a qualitative study nested in a population cohort from Goa, India.

Orthodox Jewish women abstain from sexual intercourse from the commencement of menstruation until seven days after the end of menstrual bleeding at which point they can immerse themselves in a ritual bath and recommence relations. For women who ovulate prior to commencing intercourse this results in religious infertility. The traditional treatment for religious infertility is oral estrogens in the early follicular phase to delay ovulation.

Identifying what makes some people respond well to placebos remains a major challenge. Here, we attempt to replicate an earlier study in which we found a relationship between hypnotic suggestibility and subjective ratings of relaxation following the ingestion of a placebo sedative (Sheiner, Lifshitz, & Raz, 2016). To assess the reliability of this effect, we tested 34 participants using a similar design.

Multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) is a useful tool for investigating the interrelationships among dummy-coded categorical variables. MCA has been combined with clustering methods to examine whether there exist heterogeneous subclusters of a population, which exhibit cluster-level heterogeneity. These combined approaches aim to classify either observations only (one-way clustering of MCA) or both observations and variable categories (two-way clustering of MCA).

β-lactam antibiotics are the most widely used group of antibiotics, given their effectiveness for the most common bacterial pathogens and their relatively low price. Adverse reactions, mainly cutaneous, are often reported to be associated with their use and hence, less effective and usually more costly alternative antibiotics are prescribed. However, it is not clear what is the risk of immediate immune-mediated (i.
