Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex disorder influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors, as well as their interactions. Since elevated oxidative stress and protease activity characterize the pathogenesis of COPD, variants of genes that can affect these processes have been commonly studied in COPD. However, interactions among genes that can influence oxidative stress and protease activity remain poorly investigated in COPD.

Background: Available mitochondrial (mtDNA) data demonstrate genetic differentiation among South Slavs inhabiting the Balkan Peninsula. However, their resolution is insufficient to elucidate the female-specific aspects of the genetic history of South Slavs, including the genetic impact of various migrations which were rather common within the Balkans, a region having a turbulent demographic history.
Aim: The aim was to thoroughly study complete mitogenomes of Serbians, a population linking westward and eastward South Slavs.

Spliceosomal snRNPs are complex particles that proceed through a fascinating maturation pathway. Several steps of this pathway are closely linked to nuclear non-membrane structures called Cajal bodies. In this review, I summarize the last 20 y of research in this field.

To date little has been done on identification of major phenolic compounds responsible for anticancer and antioxidant properties of pea (Pisum sativum L.) seed coat extracts. In the present study, phenolic profile of the seed coat extracts from 10 differently colored European varieties has been determined using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-linear trap quadrupole orbitrap mass spectrometer technique.

In different types of chromosome pairing (meiotic, somatic, and sister chromatids pairing) initiation stages are less elucidated. In somatic homolog pairing initiation, the long intron RNA products interference may play the essential role. The strongest somatic pairing in Drosophila melanogaster 28B1-B2 locus and its enrichment by long bi-directional transcripts prone us to analyze the pre-mRNA secondary structures.

Nucleosome positioning signal (NPS) in heterochromatin is not uniform. We suggest the analysis of its heterogeneity by correlation with periodic function (analog of Furrier analysis). It was established the periodical repetition of the nucleosome clusters of large size in pericentric regions in a discontinuous manner.

Nearly 30 synthetic nucleosides were tested with human recombinant poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 as potential inhibitors of this enzyme. The most active compounds were some disaccharide analogues of thymidine: 3'-O-β-D-ribofuranosyl-5-iodo-dUrd (2d; IC₅₀ = 45 μM), 3'-O-β-D-ribofuranosyl-2'-deoxythymidine (2e; IC₅₀ = 38 μM), and 3'-O-β-D-ribofuranosyl-2'-deoxythymidine oxidized (4; IC₅₀ = 25 μM). These compounds also reduced H₂O₂-induced synthesis of poly(ADP-ribose) in cultured human ovarian carcinoma (SKOV-3) cells in a dose-dependent manner.
