Standard OECD tests are used to generate data on biodegradation (OECD 307) and sorption (OECD 106) of test chemicals in soil. In such tests, data on abiotic degradation using sterile samples are utilised to investigate any losses due to abiotic processes. The tobacco hornworm is a laboratory model that is particularly suitable for analyzing gut inflammation, but a physiological reference standard is currently unavailable. Here, we present a surface atlas of the healthy hornworm gut generated by scanning electron microscopy and nano-computed tomography. This comprehensive overview of the gut surface reveals morphological differences between the anterior, middle, and posterior midgut, allowing the screening of aberrant gut phenotypes while accommodating normal physiological variations.

The β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM complex) is essential for outer membrane protein (OMP) folding in Gram-negative bacteria, and represents a promising antimicrobial target. Several conformational states of BAM have been reported, but all have been obtained under conditions which lack the unique features and complexity of the outer membrane (OM). In environmental risk assessment of substances, the 14-day growth inhibition test following OECD test guideline 239 is employed to assess toxicity in the macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum. Currently, this test evaluates physiological parameters and does not allow the identification of the mode of action (MoA) by which adverse effects are induced. Background: Pentastiridius leporinus (Hemiptera: Cixiidae) is the most important vector of syndrome 'basses richesses' (SBR), a new disease that leads to severe economic losses in sugar beet. In this study, different soil tillage methods (ploughing and cultivator) and crops (winter wheat, spring wheat, maize and bare soil) following SBR-infested sugar beet were tested as potential management options in field trials. Aquatic animals and consumers of aquatic animals are exposed to increasingly complex mixtures of known and as-yet-unknown chemicals with dioxin-like toxicities in the water cycle. Effect- and cell-based bioanalysis can cover known and yet unknown dioxin and dioxin-like compounds as well as complex mixtures thereof but need to be standardized and integrated into international guidelines for environmental testing. In an international laboratory testing (ILT) following ISO/CD 24295 as standard procedure for rat cell-based DR CALUX un-spiked and spiked extracts of drinking-, surface-, and wastewater were validated to generate precision data for the development of the full ISO-standard.

Introduction: Tobacco () cv Bright Yellow-2 (BY-2) cell suspension cultures enable the rapid production of complex protein-based biopharmaceuticals but currently achieve low volumetric productivity due to slow biomass formation. The biomass yield can be improved with tailored media, which can be designed either by laborious trial-and-error experiments or systematic, rational design using mechanistic models, linking nutrient consumption and biomass formation.
Methods: Here we developed an iterative experiment-modeling-optimization workflow to gradually refine such a model and its predictions, based on collected data concerning BY-2 cell macronutrient consumption (sucrose, ammonium, nitrate and phosphate) and biomass formation.
