Introduction: Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a cell surface glycoprotein and member of immunoglobuline superfamily. Recent studies pointed out that this glycoprotein also belonged to the family of intercellular adhesive molecules (ICAMs). Introduction: Pathohistological studies have shown that in secretory otitis media an increased number of mast cells have been found in mucosa of the middle ear and an increased level of histamine in the cavity of the middle ear. The aim of this study was to analyse the distribution and functional state of mast cells in middle ear mucosa biopsies in patients with chronic otitis media.

Material And Methods: The pathohistological analysis was performed on 118 biopsy specimens of mucosa of the middle ear.

The introduction of ocular photocoagulation, almost thirty years ago, was the first successful prevention of blindness from diabetic retinopathy in some patients. The development of lasers, and the growing knowledge of indications for their application, reached the point at which the growth of new blood vessels could be stopped or reversed, and legal blindness from macular oedema avoided in about half of the treated eyes. The attempts at the very prevention of diabetic retinal microvascular complications at some more physiological, even molecular level, aside from the palliative treatment by photocogulation, brought some new and exciting results which are reviewed here.

Introduction: For its transparency, avascularity and possibility of measurement of the new vessels ingrowth, cornea is a frequent model for angiogenesis research. New vessels are made in several phases: after the action of the stimulus, there is a localised fragmentation of the basal membrane and the extracellular matrix around the involved capillary. Then, endothelial cells migrate through the openings in the capillary wall and the lysis of the extracellular matrix continues as a new vessel is being formed.

Sera of patients suffering from Balkan nephropathy, pyelonephritis and glomerulonephritis inhibit lectin-induced T-cell proliferation in vitro. Immunosuppressive factors were registered in the patients' sera during the early stage of the existing disease, and their activity was not in correlation with the degree of renal insufficiency. Serum inhibitors revealed their activity during the early phase of T-cell activation and had no effect on T-cell proliferation and DNK synthesis.
