Little is known about long-term survival after the initial treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In a prospective cohort study, we aimed to assess the long-term mortality and key predictor variables relating to disease severity, treatment intensity, and comorbidities. Between 1988 and 2018, 6,243 consecutive patients with VTE from a University outpatient unit were prospectively included and followed until December 2019; clinical characteristics, measures of disease severity, and treatment details were recorded.

Introduction: The role of positron-emission tomography/computed-tomography (PET/CT) in the management of sarcomas and as a prognostic tool has been studied. However, it remains unclear which metric is the most useful. We aimed to investigate if volume-based PET metrics (Tumor volume (TV) and total lesions glycolysis (TLG)) are superior to maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and other metrics in predicting survival of patients with soft tissue and bone sarcomas.

Purpose: The aims of this study were to describe communication experiences while wearing a mask during COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, to identify possible mask-related barriers to COVID-19-adapted communications and to investigate whether the ABC mnemonic (A: attend mindfully; B: behave calmly; C: communicate clearly) might address these.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, voluntary, web-based survey between January and February 2021. A 22-item survey was developed using the Surveymonkey platform and question styles were varied to include single choice and Likert scales.

Case: The ulcerated recurrent clear cell sarcoma of the forearm with bony invasion of the radius needed an uncontaminated resection and control of infection. A mold was printed based on CT-reconstructed 3D models of the patient's anatomy to create an antibiotic-loaded cement spacer as endoprosthetic replacement used in combination with soft-tissue reconstruction and systemic antibiotics.
Conclusion: This then undescribed novel technique allowed for fast local recovery of the patient's hand function and return to work.

Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) improves exercise capacity, lung function, and quality of life in patients with heterogenous emphysema on computed tomographic and perfusion scan. However, most patients have a nonheterogenous type of destruction. These patients, summarized under "homogeneous emphysema," may also benefit from LVRS as long they are severely hyperinflated, and adequate function is remaining with a diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide greater than 20% and no pulmonary hypertension.

Introduction: In cases of placenta accreta spectrum, a precise antenatal diagnosis of the suspected degree of invasion is essential for the planning of individual management strategies at delivery. The aim of this work was to evaluate the respective performances of ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging for the antenatal assessment of the severity of placenta accreta spectrum disorders included in the database. The secondary objective was to identify descriptors related to the severity of placenta accreta spectrum disorders.

Background And Aims: Sex differences in cardiovascular prevention have been reported, yet the role of sex with regard to different modifiable risk factors such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), systolic blood pressure (BP), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in primary care settings is unclear. Therefore, we studied sex differences in assessment and measured values of LDL-C, BP, and HbA1c in primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention delivered by general practitioners.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on electronic medical records of 59,092 primary care patients (51.

Background: Talimogene laherparepvec (T-VEC) is a licensed therapy for use in melanoma patients of stage IIIB-IVM1a with injectable, unresectable metastatic lesions in Europe. Approval was based on the Oncovex Pivotal Trial in Melanoma study, which also included patients with distant metastases and demonstrated an overall response rate (ORR) of 40.5% and a complete response (CR) rate of 16.

Social avoidance in young patients is a clinically worrisome phenomenon that characterizes impending schizophrenia, but that also constitutes a core phenomenon in avoidant personality disorder (AvPD), schizoid personality disorder (ScPD), and in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Especially in the absence of any other clinically relevant phenomena, understanding the origins of social avoidance may be one the most challenging tasks in assessing whether adolescents and young adults are at risk for developing schizophrenia. Descriptive and psychometric assessments only allow to comment on the absence or the presence of this phenomenon, but do not capture the origins and the meaning of social avoidance.

Tetrahydroisoquinolines (TIQs) such as salsolinol (SAL), norsalsolinol (NSAL) and their methylated derivatives N-methyl-norsalsolinol (NMNSAL) and N-methyl-salsolinol (NMSAL), modulate dopaminergic neurotransmission and metabolism in the central nervous system. Dopaminergic neurotransmission is thought to play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic tic disorders, such as Tourette syndrome (TS). Therefore, the urinary concentrations of these TIQ derivatives were measured in patients with TS and patients with comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (TS + ADHD) compared with controls.

Background: Current studies about percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement report equivalent patient outcomes with prophylactic PEG tubes (pPEGs) versus common nutritional support. Unreported was if omitting a pPEG is associated with an increased risk of complications leading to a treatment-related unplanned hospitalization (TRUH).
Methods: TRUHs were retrospectively analyzed in patients with advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (n = 310) undergoing (chemo)radiotherapy with (pPEG) or without PEG (nPEG).

Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between retinal venous blood flow parameters and glaucomatous visual field damage in a retrospective analysis.
Methods: Fifty-five (24 male, 31 female) glaucoma patients, under intraocular pressure (IOP) reducing treatment, aged (mean ± SD) 69 ± 10 years, 29 with primary open-angle and 26 with normal-tension glaucoma, were evaluated with regard to the correlation between IOP, color Doppler retinal venous blood flow velocity and glaucomatous damage.
Results: Univariate regression analysis disclosed statistically significant correlations of the visual field index MD with age, IOP and venous blood flow (p ≤ 0.

Testicular cancer is an important disease with increasing incidence and a high burden of morbidity and mortality in young men worldwide. Histological examination of the testicular tissue after orchiectomy plays an important role alongside patient history, imaging, clinical presentation and laboratory parameters. Surgical procedures and chemotherapeutic treatment provide a high chance of cure in early stages, though some patients in advanced stages belonging to a poor risk group experience cancer-related death.

Background: One of the aims of the Young Talent Group (YTG) is to make United European Gastroenterology (UEG) more attractive to young fellows interested in gastroenterology (GI), and to actively involve them in UEG activities and the activities of their respective national societies. In 2017, we conducted a survey among the Friends of the UEG YTG with the aim of identifying the state of organization and needs of Young GI Sections (YGISs) throughout Europe, highlighting areas for further development and improvement.
Aims: The aim of the current web-based survey was to assess the progress of YGISs over 1 year, and persisting hurdles in forming and running a YGIS.

Background: Integrated care models are highly recommended to overcome care fragmentation in the multimorbid older population. Nurses are potentially ideally situated to fulfil the role as care coordinator to guide integrated care. No systematic review has been conducted specifically focusing on the impact of nurse-led integrated care models for older people in community settings.
