Genetic regulation of vascular patterning is not fully understood. Here, we report a novel gene, (), that regulates vascular development in zebrafish. Amino acid sequence comparison and a phylogenetic study showed that is conserved in vertebrates.

Article Synopsis
  • - Proper blood vessel development is essential for embryonic growth, but environmental factors can lead to defects; this study explores the effects of a new compound, X8, on vascular development in zebrafish.
  • - X8 was found to impair the growth of key blood vessels during embryogenesis, causing circulatory issues and increased apoptosis, especially at a sublethal dose of 3 μM.
  • - The research suggests that X8 inhibits the expression of important vascular genes and disrupts signaling pathways, indicating its potential as a novel antiangiogenic agent.

Fluoroquinolone exposure is reportedly associated with a higher risk of tendon disorders, tendonitis, or tendon rupture. However, studies in East Asian populations have not confirmed these risks in patients with comorbidities or concomitant medication use. This cohort study was designed to investigate the associations among fluoroquinolone exposure, comorbidities, medication use, and tendon disorders in Taiwan.

Most ovarian cancer (OC) patients are diagnosed with stage III or higher disease, resulting in a poor prognosis. Currently, paclitaxel combined with carboplatin shows the best treatment outcome for OC. However, no effective drug is available for patients that do not respond to treatment; thus, new drugs for OC are needed.

A 51-year-old woman who had lung adenocarcinoma was found to have a high uptake area over the right femoral neck by means of bone scintigraphy, suggesting a suspicious bony metastasis. F-FDG PET/CT was arranged, and showed an FDG-avid lesion in the same region. However, after augmented CT, a well-defined ground-glass lesion with circular calcification was found, which is the favored benign lesion of fibrous dysplasia.

To examine the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of smokers towards smoking prevention and provide high-quality smoking cessation services and education on tobacco prevention and establish a smoke-free care network. This study is a cross-sectional survey. The research tool is a questionnaire composed of 4 sub-scales, namely, "tobacco harm awareness," "tobacco prevention attitude," "quitting smoking self-efficacy scale," and "intentional behavior to quit smoking.

Early excision and autografting have been the principles in managing acute burn wounds. Despite the known benefits of early autografting, there are situations in which the placement of autograft is unsafe or even unavailable. In these clinical situations, skin substitutes like artificial dressings and human skin allografts are considered as useful for temporary wound coverage.

Recent studies have indicated that several anti-hypertensive drugs may delay the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the relationships among AD, hypertension, and oxidative stress remain to be elucidated. Here, we aimed to determine whether reactive oxygen species (ROS) reduction by resveratrol in the brain leads to cognitive impairment reduction in rats with angiotensin II (Ang-II)-induced early AD.

Development of a Novel Pre-Vascularized Three-Dimensional Skin Substitute Using Blood Plasma Gel.

Cell Transplant

Skin substitutes with existing vascularization are in great demand for the repair of full-thickness skin defects. In the present study, we hypothesized that a pre-vascularized skin substitute can potentially promote wound healing. Novel three-dimensional (3D) skin substitutes were prepared by seeding a mixture of human endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and fibroblasts into a human plasma/calcium chloride formed gel scaffold, and seeding keratinocytes onto the surface of the plasma gel.

Pressure sores are often observed in patients who are bedridden. They can be a severe problem not only for patients and their caregivers but also for plastic surgeons. Here, we describe a new method of superior gluteal artery perforator flap harvesting and anchoring with the assistance of intraoperative indocyanine green fluorescent angiography.

Recent studies have reported that the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) suppressed oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to examine whether the activation of AMPK in the brain decreased Rac1-induced ROS generation, thereby reducing blood pressure (BP) in rats with fructose-induced hypertension. The inhibition of ROS by treatment with an AMPK activator (oral resveratrol, 10 mg/kg/day) for 1 week decreased the BP and increased the NO production in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) of fructose-fed rats but not in control Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats.

The medulla contains complex nervous structures related to motor, sensory, coordination, and visceral autonomic functions. The medullary infarctions cause various symptoms and signs depending on the location of the lesion. Lateral medullary infarction is caused by a vascular event in the territory of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery or the vertebral artery.
