View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe number of species of miniaturized chameleons of the genus Brookesia, subgenus Evoluticauda, known to science has witnessed a dramatic increase over the past 15 years, due to the discovery of multiple microendemic species of very strong genetic divergence. So far, no described Evoluticauda species are known from the littoral forest of Madagascar's east coast, one of the most threatened habitat types of the island. Here, we report on the discovery of a new species of Evoluticauda occurring in the littoral forest at Ankanin'ny Nofy, a touristic site at about sea level and close to Vohibola forest where probably the same species occurs.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe Lygodactylus tolampyae complex includes several deep genetic lineages of small diurnal geckos from the West and North West of Madagascar whose taxonomy is largely unsolved. We sequenced DNA fragments of one mitochondrial and four nuclear-encoded genes for up to 70 samples across the entire known range of these geckos. We find as many as 11 mitochondrial lineages differentiated by >4% pairwise distances in the 16S rRNA gene fragment, with >9% pairwise distance for the majority of lineage comparisons.

Although there is extensive information about sperm nuclear basic proteins (SNBP) in vertebrates, there is, by comparison, very little information in Arthropoda. This study aims to contribute to filling this gap by analyzing these proteins in the sperm of the noble false widow spider Steatoda nobilis (order Araneae, family Theridiidae). To this end, we have developed a protein extraction method that allows the extraction of both cysteine-containing and non-cysteine-containing protamines that is suitable for the preparation and analysis of SNBPs from samples in which the amount of starting tissue material is limited.

Members of the Euphausiacea ("krill") generate bioluminescence using light organs, the so-called photophores, including one pair associated with the eyestalks, two pairs on the thoracic segments, and four unpaired photophores on the pleon. The photophores generate light via a luciferin-luciferase type of biochemical reaction in light-emitting cells comprised in a photophore compartment called "lantern". The behavioral significance of bioluminescence in krill is discussed controversially, and possible functions include a defensive function, camouflage by counter-shading, and intra-specific communication.

A combination of X-ray absorption and low-temperature electronic absorption spectroscopies has been used to probe the geometric and electronic structures of the human mitochondrial amidoxime reducing component enzyme (hmARC1) in the oxidized Mo(VI) and reduced Mo(IV) forms. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed that oxidized enzyme possesses a 5-coordinate [MoO(S)(PDT)] (PDT = pyranopterin dithiolene) active site with a cysteine coordinated to Mo. A 5-coordinate geometry is retained in the reduced state, with the equatorial oxo being protonated.

Historical specimens from museum collections provide a valuable source of material also from remote areas or regions of conflict that are not easily accessible to scientists today. With this study, we are providing a taxon-complete phylogeny of snowfinches using historical DNA from whole skins of an endemic species from Afghanistan, the Afghan snowfinch, Pyrgilauda theresae. To resolve the strong conflict between previous phylogenetic hypotheses, we generated novel mitogenome sequences for selected taxa and genome-wide SNP data using ddRAD sequencing for all extant snowfinch species endemic to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and for an extended intraspecific sampling of the sole Central and Western Palearctic snowfinch species (Montifringilla nivalis).

Ninetinae is a group of small to tiny short-legged spiders largely restricted to arid habitats. Among daddy-long-legs spiders (Pholcidae) this is by far the least diverse subfamily but this may partly be a result of inadequate collecting, poor representation in collections or scientific neglect. We build on a large recent collection of the ninetine genus Papiamenta Huber, 2000 from the Leeward Antilles and use cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI ) sequences, extensive scanning electron microscopy data, transmission electron microscopy data and karyotyping to analyse this geographically isolated and poorly known island genus.
