[Hepatitis C virus genotypes in a province of western Black-Sea region, Turkey].

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the significant causes of hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma all throughout the world. There are six genotypes and more than 50 subtypes of HCV. HCV genotyping is of crucial importance in the determination of the treatment protocols and the follow-up of the clinical course since treatment success is low and the duration of treatment is longer in HCV genotype 1 infected cases.

[Determination of hepatitis B virus genotypes by DNA sequence analysis in patients from Ankara, Turkey].

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes vary depending on the geographical region. The HBV genotype determined in Turkey has been genotype D which is found as the homogenously disseminated single genotype. The aim of this study was to determine HBV genotypes in a group of HBV infected patients who were admitted to a university hospital in Ankara, Turkey.

[Factors effecting the duration of hospitalization and mortality in patients with community-acquired pneumonia].

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common infectious disease with high morbidity and mortality. In this study, demographic features, underlying conditions, causative pathogens and factors affecting length of hospital stay and mortality were retrospectively investigated in patients who were diagnosed as CAP and followed-up in our unit between January 2005-December 2007. Among 97 patients 65 (67%) were male, 32 (33%) were female and the mean age was 62.

[Percutaneous approaches in valvular heart diseases].

Valvular heart diseases still continue to be an important health problem. Surgical replacement of cardiac valves keeps a widely used treatment method for the present. Salivary gland myoepithelioma with focal capsular invasion.

Salivary gland tumors that display myoepithelial differentiation exclusively or predominantly are relatively uncommon, and the assessment of malignancy in a myoepithelial tumor can be difficult. We report a case of parotid gland myoepithelioma composed predominantly of spindle cells with focal capsular invasion. The patient was a 65-year-old woman who presented with a painless mass in the right preauricular region.

[Necrotising endocarditis of mitral valve due to Staphylococcus lugdunensis].

[Detection of Entamoeba histolytica in stool specimens with the ELISA method].

In this study, carried out between November 2006 and September 2007, amebic cysts were observed in 44 (0.37%) out of a total of 1720 stool specimens which were examined by direct microscopy. Entamoeba histolytica specific antigen was investigated with ELISA in the specimens in which cysts were observed.

Infective endocarditis has variable clinical presentations and may present with rheumatologic manifestations. Infective endocarditis due to high level aminoglycoside resistant enterococci represents a severe therapeutic challenge as none of the currently recommended treatment regimens are bactericidal against these isolates. In this report, a case of infective endocarditis with double aetiology, high level aminoglycoside resistant Enterococcus faecalis together with methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CNS), presenting with leukocytoclastic vasculitis and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, has been presented.

Protective effects of erythropoietin against acute lung injury in a rat model of acute necrotizing pancreatitis.

Aim: To investigate the effect of exogenous erythro-poietin (EPO) administration on acute lung injury (ALI) in an experimental model of sodium taurodeoxycholate- induced acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP).

Methods: Forty-seven male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 7 groups: sham group (n = 5), 3 ANP groups (n = 7 each) and 3 EPO groups (n = 7 each). ANP was induced by retrograde infusion of 5% sodium taurodeoxycholate into the common bile duct.

[The coexistence of fractures of the capitellum and the radial head: a rare case].

The coexistence of fractures of the capitellum and the radial head in the elbow joint is a rare entity. A 36-year-old man presented with complaints of pain, swelling, and limited range of motion in the right elbow after a fall. Radiography, computed tomography, and three-dimensional reconstruction of computed tomography images revealed displaced and comminuted fractures in the capitellum and the radial head.

No-vertical-scar technique versus inverted T-scar technique in reduction mammoplasty: a two-center comparative study.

Currently, a reverse T-shaped scar remains in the infraareolar area after most of the frequently used techniques for reduction mammoplasty. A two-center study was performed for an understanding of the effects from the amount of scars on the aesthetic satisfaction of patients. Long-term follow-up results for 24 patients who underwent the McKissock (inverted T-scar) technique (group 1) in a university hospital were compared with the results for 29 patients who underwent a "no-vertical-scar technique" (group 2) at another hospital in terms of aesthetic results.
