Artificially modified magnetic anisotropy in interconnected nanowire networks.

Interconnected or crossed magnetic nanowire networks have been fabricated by electrodeposition into a polycarbonate template with crossed cylindrical nanopores oriented ±30° with respect to the surface normal. Tailor-made nanoporous polymer membranes have been designed by performing a double energetic heavy ion irradiation with fixed incidence angles. The Ni and Ni/NiFe nanowire networks have been characterized by magnetometry as well as ferromagnetic resonance and compared with parallel nanowire arrays of the same diameter and density.

Effect of ripening and heat processing on the physicochemical and rheological properties of pepper pectins.

Water-, chelator-, and alkali-soluble pectins were isolated from raw and heat-processed Jalapeño peppers (green and red) and their physiochemical and rheological properties were determined. The yield, tristimulus color, degree of methyl esterification, monosaccharide composition, molecular weights distribution, and protein content depended on ripening and heat processing. The viscosity properties of pectins were independent of ripening.

Mapping the ATP binding site in the plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase from Kluyveromyces lactis.

The plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase from Kluyveromyces lactis contains 14 tryptophan residues. Binding a nucleotide or unfolding with Gnd-HCl quenched intrinsic fluorescence by ≈60% suggesting that in the H(+)-ATPase-Nucleotide complex there is solvent-mediated collisional quenching of W505 fluorescence. N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) treatment of H(+)-ATPase modified a single W residue in both native and Gnd-HCl-unfolded H(+)-ATPase.

Several studies have shown circadian variations in the response of the immune system suggesting a role of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Here we show that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration in the beginning of the active period induced more severe responses in temperature and cytokines than LPS given in the rest period. Moreover night administered LPS increased SCN basal neuronal activity indicating a direct influence of inflammation on the SCN.

Network efficient power control for wireless communication systems.

We introduce a two-loop power control that allows an efficient use of the overall power resources for commercial wireless networks based on cross-layer optimization. This approach maximizes the network's utility in the outer-loop as a function of the averaged signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) by considering adaptively the changes in the network characteristics. For this purpose, the concavity property of the utility function was verified with respect to the SINR, and an iterative search was proposed with guaranteed convergence.

Loss of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal diversity in trap cultures during long-term subculturing.

Long-term successional dynamics of an inoculum of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associated with the maize rhizosphere (from traditionally managed agroecosystems in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico), was followed in Bracchiaria comata trap cultures for almost eight years. The results indicate that AMF diversity is lost following long-term subculturing of a single plant host species. Only the dominant species, Claroideoglomus etunicatum, persisted in pot cultures after 13 cycles.

We study the diffusion of an ensemble of overdamped particles sliding over a tilted random potential (produced by the interaction of a particle with a random polymer) with long-range correlations. We found that the diffusion properties of such a system are closely related to the correlation function of the corresponding potential. We model the substrate as a symbolic trajectory of a shift space which enables us to obtain a general formula for the diffusion coefficient when normal diffusion occurs.

Dipolar interaction in arrays of magnetic nanotubes.

The dipolar interaction field in arrays of nickel nanotubes has been investigated on the basis of expressions derived from the effective demagnetizing field of the assembly as well as magnetometry measurements. The model incorporates explicitly the wall thickness and aspect ratio, as well as the spatial order of the nanotubes. The model and experiment show that the interaction field in nanotubes is smaller than that in solid nanowires due to the packing fraction reduction in tubes related to their inner cavity.

A chromium-resistant fungus isolated from contaminated air with industrial vapors can be used for reducing toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This study analyzes in vitro reduction of hexavalent chromium using cell free extract(s) of the fungus that was characterized based on optimal temperature, pH, use of electron donors, metal ions and initial Cr(VI) concentration in the reaction mixture. This showed the highest activity at 37°C and pH 7.

Electrospun one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) carbon based polymer nanocomposites are studied in order to determine the effect provided by the two differently structured nanofillers on crystallinity and thermo-mechanical properties of the nanofibres. The nanomaterials studied are pristine carbon nanotubes, oxidised carbon nanotubes, reduced graphene oxide and graphene oxide. Functional groups associated with the order structure of the polymers are analysed by infrared and Raman spectroscopies; the morphology is studied by scanning electron microscopy and the crystallinity properties are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction.

Management and followup of complicated crown fractures in young patients treated with partial pulpotomy.

Two cases of young patients with traumatized permanent teeth having complicated crown fractures are reported. Endodontic management included partial pulpotomy by the Cvek technique; restorative management included resin restoration and reattachment of the teeth fragments. Treatments were considered successful in all cases according to the following criteria: absence of clinical symptoms, absence of X-ray signs of pathology, and presence of pulpal vitality 6 to 25 months after treatment.

Configuration dependent demagnetizing field in assemblies of interacting magnetic particles.

A mean field model is presented for the configuration dependent effective demagnetizing and anisotropy fields in assemblies of exchange decoupled magnetic particles of arbitrary shape which are expressed in terms of the demagnetizing factors of the particles and the volumetric shape containing the assembly. Perpendicularly magnetized two-dimensional (2D) assemblies have been considered, for which it is shown that the demagnetizing field is lower than the continuous thin film. As an example of these 2D systems, arrays of bistable cylindrical nanowires have been characterized by remanence curves as well as ferromagnetic resonance, serving to show the correspondence of these measurements with the model and also to validate the mean field approach.
