Background: To demonstrate the use of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to determine sialic acid (SA) levels in saliva using silver nanoparticles as substrates, in adnexal mass patients scheduled for surgical intervention to remove invasive masses, with the aim to compare SA levels in benign tumor vs ovarian cancer patients.
Methods: Quantification of SA levels was accomplished by measuring their SERS and calibrating with analytical reagent SA. The mean SA concentration in saliva from 37 benign adnexal mass resulted smaller (5.

Background: Craniosynostosis (CS) is a complex condition consisting of the early fusion of one or more cranial sutures in the intrauterine stage. The affected infant exhibits abnormal head shape at time of birth or shortly thereafter. It can be observed in normal individuals (non-syndromic CS or NSCS) or as a part of a multisystem syndrome.

Redox mediators (RM) are natural or artificial compounds used by microorganisms as electron acceptors and electron donors during electron transfer. Evidence collected in the last years indicates that the application of RM in bioelectrochemical systems (BES) enhanced the electron transfer from microorganisms to anodes and from cathodes to microorganisms. This review summarizes the results of using soluble or immobilized RM in BES to produce electricity and for the treatment of contaminants from wastewater effluents.

Edible insects, due to their high nutritive value, are currently considered as a potential renewable source for food and feed production. Liometopum apiculatum ants are widely distributed in arid and semi-arid ecosystems and their larvae (escamoles) are considered as a delicacy, however the microbial importance in L. apiculatum nutritional ecology is unknown.

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) catalyzes the reduction of pyruvate to lactate by using NADH. LDH kinetics has been proposed to be dependent on the dynamics of a loop over the active site. Kramers' theory has been useful in the study of enzyme catalysis dependent on large structural dynamics.

Naphthoquinone amino derivatives exhibit interesting physicochemical properties and a wide range of biological activities with potential medicinal applications. A clean, fast and simple method for the preparation of phenylamino-1,4-naphthoquinones is presented by the reaction of naphthoquinone (NQ) and anilines under ultrasound irradiation (US). Anilino derivatives were synthesized in good yields and shorter reaction times in comparison with the conventional method.

HDM2 and HDMX are two homologs essential for controlling p53 tumor suppressor activity under normal conditions. Both proteins bind different sites on the p53 N-terminus, and while HDM2 has E3 ubiquitin ligase activity towards p53, HDMX does not. Nevertheless, HDMX is required for p53 polyubiquitination and degradation, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear.

Efficient hydrolysis of holocellulose depends on a proper balance between cellulase (endoglucanase, exoglucanase, β-glucosidase) and xylanase activities. The present study aimed to induce the production of cellulases and xylanases using liquid cultures (one, two, three, and four fungal strains on the same bioreactor) of wild strains of Trichoderma harzianum, Aspergillus niger, and Fusarium oxysporum. The strains were identified by amplification and analysis of the ITS rDNA region and the obtained sequences were deposited in Genbank.

Firmness at harvest determines the postharvest storability and quality of apples. The climate change has altered the physiological processes of fruits and the reliability of ripening indicators typically used to determine the harvest time, compromising fruit firmness. In this study, 'Golden Delicious' apples were harvested at several developmental/ripening stages (107, 122, 137, 152 and 167 days after full bloom, DAFB) and evaluated for physicochemical attributes, which were correlated with fruit firmness.

Background: Takayasu arteritis is a rare, chronic, granulomatous systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology and a few cases have been reported in pregnancy. In pregnancies concomitant with Takayasu arteritis or after diagnosis, Takayasu arteritis negatively affects pregnancy by increasing 13-fold the odds of complications such as hypertensive disorders. The best recommendations in this scenario are still to be made.

Background: Treatment of severe or chronic skin wounds is an important challenge facing medicine and a significant health care burden. Proper wound healing is often affected by bacterial infection; where biofilm formation is one of the main risks and particularly problematic because it confers protection to microorganisms against antibiotics. One avenue to prevent bacterial colonization of wounds is the use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs); which have proved to be effective against non-multidrug-resistant and multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Graphene oxide-gold nanoparticle (AuNPs@GO) hybrids were fabricated in water dispersions of graphene oxide (GO) and Au precursor completely free of stabilizing agents by UV-light irradiation. Gold nanoparticle (AuNP) nucleation, growth, and stabilization mechanisms at the surface of GO are discussed on the basis of UV-Vis, Raman, IR, and X-Ray photo-spectroscopy studies. The analyses of AuNPs@GO hybrids by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric (TGA) and electrochemical tests show that they exhibit outstanding chemical, thermal and electrochemical stabilities.

A prospective completely randomized experimental study was conducted using 48 animals to evaluate the physiometabolic effects of Agave salmiana fructans as a dietary supplement in healthy Wistar rats. Five fructans concentrations from 5 to 20% (w/w) and one control were used in the rats' diet and were divided into six groups (n=8 rats/group). The treatments were carried out for 35days, during which glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, body-weight gain, food intake, fecal excretion, organ weights, renal and hepatic functions and a histological analysis of the cecum were evaluated.

Background: Apert Syndrome (AS), or type I acrocephalosyndactyly, is a rare, congenital craniosynostosis condition resulting from missense mutations in the gene encoding fibroblast growth factor receptor 2. It is characterized by three specific clinical features: brachycephalic skull; midface hypoplasia, and limb abnormalities (syndactyly of hands and feet). The disorder exhibits variable presentations in bones, brain, skin, internal organs, and in the oral/maxillofacial region.

A biofilm is a very complex consortium formed by a mix of different microorganisms, which have become an important health problem, because its formation is a resistance mechanism used by bacteria against antibiotics or the immune system. In this work, we show differences between some physicochemical properties of biofilms in mono- and multi-species, formed by bacteria from clinical samples of infected chronic wounds. Of the most prevalent bacteria in wounds, two mono- and one multi-species biofilms were developed in vitro by Drip Flow Reactor: one biofilm was developed by S.

Purpose Of Review: The present paper establishes a narrative and analytical review of diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) in ANCA-associated vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and antiphospholipid syndrome.
Recent Findings: Recent studies found a frequent association between DAH and infections and systemic lupus erythematosus and its associated factors. Biological therapies like rituximab have demonstrated benefit mainly in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis.
