Epidemiological and in vitro studies suggest that dietary anthocyanins in their intact form exert beneficial effects on human health. However, the potential contributions of anthocyanin metabolites to these beneficial effects have been underestimated. The objective of this review was to critically analyze the outcomes of studies concerning the formation, identification, cellular transport, and biological actions of anthocyanin metabolites generated during digestion to formulate several premises supporting the idea that these compounds largely contribute to human health.

Spatio-temporal analyses of environmental and social criteria in the context of climate change, facilitate understanding of how historical and current conditions have influenced watershed health. Previous studies have analyzed watershed health, but very few have integrated fuzzy logic with the CRITIC method (Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation), which enables us to explore alternatives to improve watershed performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in watershed health through historical and projected climate change scenario in the tropical Santa Cruz watershed in Aquismón, S.

Impacts of the acid mine drainage (AMD) remediation are investigated on the largest gold mine in Latin America, located in the Dominican Republic. Geochemical analysis of suspended matter in water performed in 2022 on water bodies located downstream to the mine, namely, the Margajita River and Lake Hatillo, are compared with analyses made in 2007, before the AMD remediation. The results for the Margajita River show a strong decrease in heavy metal and metalloid concentrations in the dissolved phase for Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, and Pb (between 89.

Economic growth and urban sprawl in territorial systems produce an uneven distribution of infrastructure and services. This creates residential areas with high capital gains that are affordable only for the middle and upper classes. For lower-income groups, the only options are depressed urban areas with limited infrastructure.

Constructed wetlands are used to remove diclofenac and naproxen from wastewater. However, the role of plants and their root-associated bacteria in removing these pharmaceuticals is still unknown. In this work, bacteria were isolated from the roots of Typha latifolia cultivated in a constructed wetland to treat a diclofenac and naproxen mix.

Candida albicans, a common fungal organism, often lives harmlessly in the human body. However, under certain conditions, it can turn into a dangerous pathogen, causing infections that range from mild to life-threatening. With rising resistance to antifungal treatments, understanding and controlling this opportunistic fungus has never been more crucial.

Biopolymer chitosan sub-micron particles (CSMPs) were prepared by the ionic gelation technique crosslinked with sodium tripolyphosphate co-loaded with trans-cinnamaldehyde (TCIN), and either curcumin (CUR) or paclitaxel (PTX). The size of the spherical CSMPs increased from 118 nm to 136 nm and 170 nm after the loading of TCIN and CUR, whereas the loading of PTX led to a slight decrease (114 nm). Polydispersity indexes of all the samples were smaller than 0.

This article provides the foundation for employing nonparametric testing in dental clinical research. To make wise judgments in their research, investigators should learn more about the main nonparametric tests and their particular uses. Biostatistical analysis is essential in dental research; dental research frequently deviates from the assumptions that underpin traditional parametric statistics.

In this study, the adsorption capacity of bio-hydroxyapatite (Bio-HAp) from devilfish for the removal of F and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions was investigated. This material was synthesized according to a 2FI factorial experimental design by varying the extraction conditions for Bio-HAp, including the type of pretreatment (alkaline and peroxide), the calcination temperature from 550 to 850 °C, and the sonication process. The maximum adsorption capacities were 8.

In light of the post-genomic era, epigenetics brings about an opportunity to better understand how the molecular machinery works and is led by a complex dynamic set of mechanisms, often intricate and complementary in many aspects. In particular, epigenetics links developmental biology and genetics, as well as many other areas of knowledge. The present work highlights substantial scopes and relevant discoveries related to the development of the term from its first notions.

Background/objectives: Reduced serum magnesium (Mg) levels have been associated with obesity, insulin resistance (IR), type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in adults. However, in the children population, the evidence is still limited. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to analyze the association of serum Mg levels with the frequency of overweight and obesity and cardiometabolic traits in 189 schoolchildren (91 girls and 98 boys) between 6 and 12 years old from Mexico City.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a pathophysiological condition defined by a set of metabolic alterations such as hypertriglyceridemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension, low HDL-c levels, and visceral obesity. Its presence identifies people with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes; however, the lack of practical and reliable methods for its diagnosis limits the identification of people with this condition. In this sense, the objective of this study was to analyze the diagnostic utility of markers derived from the lipid profile [triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and the ratios total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), triglyceride (TG)/HDL-c, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/HDL-c, fasting blood glucose (FBG)/HDL-c, and white blood cell/HDL-c] in the determination of MetS.

Sutures are a crucial component of surgical procedures, serving to close and stabilize wound margins to promote healing. However, microbial contamination of sutures can increase the risk of surgical site infections (SSI) due to colonization by pathogens. This study aimed to tackle SSI by synthesizing positively charged silver nanoparticles (P-AgNPs) and using them to produce antimicrobial sutures.
