Israeli neonatal herpes simplex infection: Unique epidemiology and clinical profile.

J Med Virol

September 2024

Pediatric Infectious diseases Unit, Edmond and Lily Safra Children's Hospital, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Ramat Gan, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted on Israeli neonatal herpes simplex virus (NHSV) infection collected data from 2015 to 2022, comparing clinical characteristics of NHSV patients with those suffering from neonatal enteroviral meningitis (NEM).
  • The results showed an NHSV incidence of 5.9 per 100,000 live births, with notable demographics suggesting that horizontal transmission was linked to practices like ritual circumcision.
  • NHSV patients presented unique symptoms such as a lower incidence of fever and irritability but showed a tendency for rashes and seizures, marking a distinct clinical profile compared to NEM, which can help guide treatment approaches for infected newborns.

Can Blood Inflammatory Markers Identify Pregnant Women with Preeclampsia? Still a Controversial Issue.

Isr Med Assoc J

September 2024

Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, Bar-Ilan University, Safed, Israel, Department of Hematology, Galilee Medical Center, Nahariya, Israel.

Background: Preeclampsia is a unique vascular disease during pregnancy that generally appears after 20 of weeks gestation or until 6 weeks after delivery. Left undiagnosed, preeclampsia can lead rapidly to death of both mother and fetus.

Objectives: To verify the efficacy of peripheral blood inflammatory markers (BIMs)in diagnosing preeclampsia and compare them with results from other studies.

Background: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) significantly impairs vocal function, affecting patients' quality of life. Injection laryngoplasty, a primary treatment modality for UVFP, varies in effectiveness based on the material used, injection volume, and procedural nuances. This study aims to systematically analyze how these factors influence treatment outcomes to optimize intervention strategies.

Importance And Objective: Partial gland ablation (PGA) is increasingly popular as a treatment for men with intermediate-risk prostate cancer (IR-PCa) to preserve functional outcomes while controlling their cancer. We aimed to determine the impact of race and clinical characteristics on the risk of upstaging (≥pT2c) and having adverse pathological outcomes including seminal vesicle invasion (SVI), extra prostatic extension (EPE) and lymph node invasion (LNI) at radical prostatectomy (RP) among men with IR disease eligible for PGA with hemi-ablation (HA).

Design: Retrospective analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The report highlights a significant decrease in infectious epiglottitis cases due to widespread vaccination, but concerns arise over rising non-infectious causes, particularly among children.
  • Two case studies involving vaccinated children show severe epiglottitis caused by non-infectious factors: one from thermal injury and the other from chemical exposure.
  • Both cases required urgent medical interventions, underscoring the need for clinicians to recognize and manage non-infectious etiologies to ensure positive patient outcomes.

Background: Rilonacept inhibits the interleukin-1 pathway, and extended treatment in patients with recurrent pericarditis (RP) reduced recurrence risk by 98% in the phase 3 trial, RHAPSODY long-term extension (LTE). Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2 vaccination and/or infection may trigger pericarditis recurrence, and in clinical practice, it is unknown whether to continue rilonacept during SARS-CoV-2 infection. This post-hoc analysis of the RHAPSODY LTE aimed to inform rilonacept management in RP patients vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 or who contract COVID-19.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

July 2024

From the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Wolfson Medical Center, Holon, Israel (Dr. Lotan, Dr. Klatzkin, Dr. Lan, and Dr. Hershkovich), affiliated to the School of Medicine, Tel Aviv, Israel (Dr. Lotan, Dr. Klatzkin, Dr. Lan, and Dr. Hershkovich), and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Ziv Medical Center, Zfat, Israel (Dr. Sakhnini), affiliated to the Bar Ilan University, Bnei Brak, Israel (Dr. Sakhnini).

Introduction: Lumbar range of motion (ROM) is a critical component of spinal function and often affected by age and sex. This study aimed to evaluate the variations in lumbar ROM across different age groups in a healthy adult population and determine the influence of sex, height, weight, and body mass index.

Methods: A total of 208 subjects (106 men, 102 women) were recruited and stratified into age groups from the 20s to 60s and older.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of a novel fusion template "reduced six-core systemic template and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging/transrectal ultrasound (mpMRI/TRUS) fusion targeted biopsy" (TBx+6c), with mpMRI/TRUS fusion-targeted biopsy and 12-core systematic biopsy template (TBx+12c) in the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa).

Materials And Methods: This is an institutional review board approved single-center observational study involving adult men undergoing fusion-targeted biopsies for the diagnosis of PCa. Patients were sorted into cohorts of TBx+6c or TBx+12c based on the systematic biopsy template used.

Objectives: Children and their parents often provide divergent reports regarding their mental health on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). These discrepancies may impede the diagnostic processes. The present study aimed to explore how a child's attachment to the parent and parental feelings may explain some of the variability between parent's and children's reports on the SDQ.

Flow-cytometry (FC) is a powerful tool that can assist in lymphoma diagnosis in lymph node (LN) specimens. Although lymphoma diagnosis and classification are mainly based on tumor cell characteristics, surrounding cells are less employed in this process. We retrospectively investigated alterations in the ploidy status, proliferative cell fraction (PF) and the percentages of surrounding immune cells in 62 consecutive LN specimens with B-Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (B-NHL) that were submitted for FC evaluation between 2019-2022.

Super-enhancers are unique gene expression regulators widely involved in cancer development. Spread over large DNA segments, they tend to be found next to oncogenes. The super-enhancer c-MYC locus forms long-range chromatin looping with nearby genes, which brings the enhancer and the genes into proximity, to promote gene activation.
