Kidney stones formation is a multifactorial condition and influenced, in some degree, by dietary habits. Authoritative clinical guidelines published nutritional recommendations for individuals prone to kidney stone formation. The association between dietary intake calcium to phosphorus (Ca/P) ratios and the prevalence of kidney stones is not well-established in extensive epidemiological studies.

Background And Objectives: Cognitive impairment is a core feature of schizophrenia, and it is now clear that there is a link between nutritional indicators and cognitive functioning. This study aimed to investigate correlations between three nutritional indicators (prognostic nutritional index [PNI], geriatric nutritional risk index [GNRI], and controlling nutritional status score [CONUT]) and cognitive function in hospitalized patients with stable schizophrenia.
Methods: A total of 235 patients who were hospitalized with stable schizophrenia were included.

Huperzine A (HupA) is used in Alzheimer's disease (AD) therapy for its effective inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and enhancement of cholinergic neuronal function. However, direct oral administration and injection of HupA cause side effects like nausea, anorexia, and rapid metabolism. Using a tripolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate (PBVHx), from the polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) family synthesized via synthetic biology, we present a novel AD therapy strategy with peritoneally administered PBVHx microspheres loaded with HupA (HupA-PBVHxMs).

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the third most prevalent malignant neoplasm in terms of both morbidity and mortality. Within the tumor microenvironment (TME) of CRC, the diminished presence and diminished cytotoxic function of natural killer (NK) cells serve as important factors driving the advancement of CRC; however, the precise regulatory mechanisms governing this phenomenon remain incompletely understood. Consequently, the identification of novel, potential anti-CRC targets associated with NK cells emerges as a pressing and paramount concern warranting immediate attention.

Background: Current research has found that factors such as gender, age, and family history can predict the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in individuals with schizophrenia. In our clinical practice, we anecdotally observed that tobacco smokers and alcohol drinkers with schizophrenia seemed to respond more effectively to ECT than non-smokers and non-drinkers. The current study aimed to examine whether history of tobacco smoking or alcohol consumption serve as indicators for predicting therapeutic efficacy of ECT in individuals with schizophrenia.

Objective: The goal of this investigation was to elucidate the correlation between sarcopenia screening indicators (aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase (AST/ALT) and creatinine/cystatin C*100 (Cr/CysC*100)) and the risk of out-of-hospital (OFH) death among the very advanced age (≥80 years) population.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort investigation, involving internal medicine inpatients aged ≥80 years of age, who sought treatment at a teaching hospital in western China. We obtained OFH mortality information from telephonic interviews.

Background: Malnutrition is a well-known risk factor for mortality among older adults. Arthritis and rheumatism are characterized by chronic inflammation and are also related to malnutrition as diagnosed using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. This study was thus developed to examine the associations linking malnutrition and all-cause death among older adults in China, employing the GLIM criteria to assess malnutrition.

While traditional high-dose chemotherapy can effectively prolong the overall survival of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients and contribute to better prognostic outcomes, the advent of chemoresistance is a persistent challenge to effective AML management in the clinic. The therapeutic resistance is thought to emerge owing to the heterogeneous and adaptable nature of tumor cells when exposed to exogenous stimuli. Recent studies have focused on exploring metabolic changes that may afford novel opportunities to treat AML, with a particular focus on glycolytic metabolism.

Objectives: Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia have a high incidence and fatality rates due to pneumonia. Sarcopenia is a contributing factor to the development of pneumonia in patients with schizophrenia. In this study, we examine the effectiveness of three simple screening questionnaires, namely SARC-F, SARC-CalF, and SARC-F + EBM, in predicting the occurrence of pneumonia in stable patients with schizophrenia who are experiencing sarcopenia.

Background And Objectives: Low handgrip strength (HGS) and abdominal obesity (AO) have been reported to be linked to an increased all-cause mortality risk in older adults. However, the combined impact of AO with low HGS and/or HGS asymmetry on mortality risk remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of AO and abnormal HGS on mortality risk among Chinese older adults.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that significantly impacts the lives of affected individuals and with increasing mortality rates. Early detection and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes but the lack of validated biomarkers poses great challenges in such efforts. The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in schizophrenia enables the investigation of the disorder's etiological and neuropathological substrates in vivo.

Purpose: Current handgrip strength (HGS) protocols employ a variety of criteria, affecting the assessment of asymmetric HGS. The impact of these different criteria on fall prediction is understudied. This study was devised to compare the relative performance of average and maximum HGS asymmetry criteria as tools to predict fall incidence among middle-aged or older adults in China.

Skin wound healing is a complex and tightly regulated process. The frequent occurrence and reoccurrence of acute and chronic wounds cause significant skin damage to patients and impose socioeconomic burdens. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to promote interdisciplinary development in the fields of material science and medicine to investigate novel mechanisms for wound healing.

Background: It is reported that reduced physical activity and malnutrition may trigger pneumonia, and the utilisation of the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) upon admission to long-term nursing care can enable the implementation of accurate and timely rehabilitation and nutritional support, which may, in turn, minimise pneumonia incidence. However, to date, there is no reported association between GNRI and pneumonia among stable schizophrenic patients.
Methods: This is a retrospective investigation.

Background: Few studies have examined whether social support contributes to better consequences among chronic patients with severe mental illnesses (SMI) in their community recovery stage and whether self-stigma would be a mechanism through which social support impacts psychiatric symptoms and personal and social functioning.
Aims: This study aimed to examine prospective associations of social support with long-term self-stigma, psychiatric symptoms, and personal and social functioning, and to investigate whether self-stigma would mediate the associations of social support with psychiatric symptoms and personal and social functioning among patients with SMI.
Methods: A total of 312 persons with SMI (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) in their community recovery stage participated in the study.

At present, there is no uniform standard mean of identifying handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry based on maximum or average HGS values. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the accuracy of different calculation methods in the evaluation of HGS asymmetry. Using the maximum reading of two trials from both hands (Method A) as the reference standard, the accuracy of the HGS asymmetry identified by the average value of two trials of both hands (Method B) was determined by using various indicators, including specificity, sensitivity, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), positive, and negative predictive values.
