The organic carbon content of ancient rocks provides a fundamental record of the biosphere on early Earth. For over 50 y, the high organic content of Archean (>2.5 Ga) mudrocks has puzzled geologists and evolutionary biologists, because high biological primary productivity was unexpected for the nascent biosphere before the rise of O.

The global issue of insecticide resistance among pests is a major concern. Ectropis grisescens Warren (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), is a highly destructive leaf-eating pest distributed in tea plantations throughout China and Japan, and has exhibited resistance to various insecticides. Recent studies suggest that insect symbionts play a role in influencing insecticide resistance, however, their specific involvement in E.

[Tumor-associated macrophages promote pre-metastatic niche formation in ovarian cancer].

The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu Cancer Hospital, Jiangsu Institute of Cancer Research, Nanjing 210000, China. *Corresponding author, E-mail:

Patients with ovarian cancer (OC) are often diagnosed at an advanced stage and have a poor prognosis because of extensive tumour metastasis. Tumour metastasis usually occurs in stages, which means that before the invasion of tumour cells, a pre-metastatic niche (PMN) has been formed to support the subsequent colonisation and growth of tumour cells. Tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) are highly heterogeneous in terms of origin, phenotype and function.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) represents a complex pathophysiological process involving the interaction of multiple cell types. Conventional sequencing methods can only detect the average gene expression level of the damaged local cell populations, which is difficult to reflect its heterogeneity. Therefore, new technologies are needed to reveal the intercellular heterogeneity and the complex intercellular interactions of the damaged lesions.

Cancer immunotherapy including immune checkpoint inhibitors and adoptive cell therapy has gained revolutionary success in the treatment of hematologic tumors; however, it only gains limited success in solid tumors. For example, chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy has shown significant effects and potential for curing patients with B-cell malignancies. In contrast, it remains a challenge for CAR-T cell therapy to gain similar success in solid tumors.

December 2024

Department of Immunology, Basic Medical Science Academy, Air Force Medical University, Xi'an 710032, China. *Corresponding authors, E-mail:

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with an insidious onset, primarily characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function. MCP-1 is a cytokine with chemotactic effects on monocytes, which can regulate their migration and infiltration and participate in disease progression. Increasing evidence suggests that MCP-1 plays a key role in the progression of Alzheimer's disease and has the potential to act as an early diagnostic marker and intervention target.

Xi Bao Yu Fen Zi Mian Yi Xue Za Zhi

December 2024

Department of Oncology, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan 430000, China.

Objective To investigate the effects of evodiamine (EVO) on Natural Killer (NK) cell-mediated killing in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells via affecting baculoviral inhibitor of apoptosis repeat containing 5 (BIRC5). Methods H446 cells and NK-92 cells were treated with EVO at different concentrations, and cell proliferation was detected using the MTT (3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, while cell invasion was assessed using the Transwell assay. NK-92 cells and H446 cells were co-cultured at different effector-to-target ratios to detect the cytotoxicity of NK cells against H446 cells and the level of degranulation in NK-92 cells.

January 2025

Center for Biomedical-photonics and Molecular Imaging, Advanced Diagnostic-Therapy Technology and Equipment Key Laboratory of Higher Education Institutions in Shaanxi Province, School of Life Science and Technology, Xidian University, Xi'an, Shaanxi 710126, China.

Functional nucleic acids constitute a distinct category of nucleic acids that diverge from conventional nucleic acid amplification methodologies. They are capable of forming intricate hybrid structures through Hoogsteen and reverse Hoogsteen hydrogen bonding interactions between double-stranded and single-stranded DNA, thereby broadening the spectrum of DNA interactions. In recent years, functional DNA/RNA-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a potent platform capable of ultrasensitive and multiplexed detection of a variety of analytes of interest.

Article Synopsis
  • A team of over 180 researchers from more than 40 countries is addressing the issues related to "phantom agents," which are proposed pathogenic agents that are listed without concrete evidence of their existence.
  • These phantom agents, identified only through symptoms and lacking proper isolates or genetic data, create obstacles for trade and plant certification, making effective detection and risk assessment difficult.
  • The researchers recommend removing these agents from regulatory lists and updating standards in line with modern diagnostic methods to facilitate germplasm exchange and support global agriculture.

Asparagine endopeptidase (AEP) is ubiquitously expressed in both physiological and pathological contexts, yet its precise role and functional mechanism in breast cancer remain elusive. Here, we identified increased AEP expression in breast cancer tissues, which correlated with poorer survival rates and a propensity for lung metastasis among breast cancer patients. Loss of AEP impaired colony formation by breast cancer cells in vitro and suppressed lung metastasis in mice.
