In the current study, the analytical sensitivity, analytical specificity, reproducibility, anti-interferences ability, and clinical performance of the QIAstat-Dx Gastrointestinal Panel (GIP) system were evaluated using pooled stool samples. Results showed that the pooled sample test detected the selected ten targets exclusively, with no cross reaction with any other targets of common enteropathogens. The analytical sensitivity of the pooled sample test on QIAstat-Dx GIP system was 10 CFU/ml for Shigella spp.

Department of Infectious Diseases, Institute of Shenzhen Respiratory Diseases, Shenzhen People's Hospital (The Second Clinical Medical College, Jinan University, The First Affiliated Hospital, Southern University of Science and Technology), Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Background: Fibrinogen plays a pivotal role in the inflammatory cascade and is intricately linked to the pathogenesis of sepsis. Nevertheless, its significance as a prognostic marker for sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the association between fibrinogen levels and 28-day mortality with sepsis-associated acute kidney injury.

Article Synopsis
  • China was certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization in 2021, but the risk of locally transmitted cases from returned travelers remains a public health concern.
  • A review of malaria cases in China from 2013 to 2022 showed a decline in cases, with the majority being imported; the last locally acquired case was noted in 2017.
  • Strengthening travel medicine services is essential to manage the risks associated with travelers returning from malaria-endemic countries and to support continued malaria elimination efforts in China.

Article Synopsis
  • Diuron is a herbicide used in farming to help crops grow, but it can harm the environment, especially in water.
  • The study looked at how Diuron affects a tiny creature called Alexandrium pacificum, which can cause harmful algae blooms.
  • The results showed that Alexandrium can break down Diuron and reduce harmful toxins, even though it also hurts the algae's ability to grow and photosynthesize.

O'nyong-nyong fever is a mosquito-borne tropical viral disease while few molecular diagnostic tools have been established for its surveillance until now. In the current study, a single-step, dual-color real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay which contained both external quality control (EQC) and internal quality control (IQC) prepared by armored RNA technique was developed and evaluated for the detection of o'nyong-nyong virus (ONNV). Results showed that the assay was established successfully without cross-reaction with genetically related or symptom-alike diseases, which showed high specificity of the assay.

ggmsa: a visual exploration tool for multiple sequence alignment and associated data.

Brief Bioinform

July 2022

Department of Bioinformatics, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

The identification of the conserved and variable regions in the multiple sequence alignment (MSA) is critical to accelerating the process of understanding the function of genes. MSA visualizations allow us to transform sequence features into understandable visual representations. As the sequence-structure-function relationship gains increasing attention in molecular biology studies, the simple display of nucleotide or protein sequence alignment is not satisfied.

Dengue fever is a highly endemic arthropod-borne viral disease in the tropical and sub-tropical countries and is rapidly becoming a global threaten. Diagnosis has been conducted by either traditional serological methods or molecular biological techniques. However, these methods are either labor-intensive, time-consuming or with multiple steps, which are not suitable for high throughput detection of large quantity of samples.

Fecal-oral transmission of acute gastroenteritis occurs from time to time, especially when people who handled food and water are infected by Salmonella spp./Shigella spp. The gold standard method for the detection of Salmonella spp.

The cross border movement of populations would potentially increase the transmission and spread of various diseases including HIV/AIDS, which needed strict surveillance. In the current study, a total of 2,961,530 specimens were collected between 2012 and 2016 from the entry-exit populations at frontier ports of China for epidemiology and molecular epidemiology study. Results showed that HIV-1 prevalence rate among these populations was significantly higher than that of other general populations in China (p < .

September 2016

State Key Laboratory of Diarrhea Disease Detection, Zhuhai International Travel Healthcare Center, Zhuhai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, Zhuhai, Guangdong, China.

Rapid and sensitive diagnostic methods are needed to help physicians make faster and better treatment decision for patients suffered from diarrhea. In the present study, a probe-free and sensitive RT-PCR combined high resolution melting analysis (HRMA) assay was established successfully for the detection of four major diarrhea-causing pathogens. The lower limit of detection of the assay were 10(0), 10(2), 10(0) and 10(3) copies/reaction for rotaviruses group A, astroviruses serotype 1, noroviruses genogroup II, and sapoviruses genegroup I, respectively, which were 1000-fold, 10-fold, 1000-fold and 10-fold more sensitive than conventional RT-PCR assay developed in parallel and comparable to or higher than commercially available real-time RT-PCR assay.

Recombinant forms contribute substantially to the genetic diversity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Here we report a novel HIV-1 recombinant detected from a comprehensive HIV-1 molecular epidemiologic study among cross-border populations in China. Near full-length genome (NFLG) phylogenetic analysis showed that the novel HIV-1 recombinant ZJCIQ15005, which was isolated from a Malaysian immigrant worker in Zhejiang, China, clustered with CRF55_01B reference sequences but set up a distinct branch.

Rotaviruses, noroviruses and astroviruses are the major viral pathogens leading to diarrhea worldwide. Epidemiological investigations of outbreaks associated with these viruses have been impeded by the lack of methods for quick diagnosis and detection. In the current study, a multiplex real-time nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (RT-NASBA) system was developed for the simultaneous detection of rotavirus A/norovirus genogroup II/astrovirus.
