Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of two different photodynamic therapy (PDT) protocols combined with the drug bevacizumab for treating corneal neovascularization (CNV) in patients unresponsive to conventional treatments.
  • - Patients were divided into two groups: one received lower energy PDT parameters, while the other received higher energy parameters, with the bevacizumab injection given immediately after PDT.
  • - Results showed that overall, 60% of patients experienced improved vision and there was a significant reduction in neovascularization, particularly in the group that received the higher energy treatment, demonstrating the potential of optimized combined therapy for CNV.

Effects of PPAR-γ and RXR-α on mouse meibomian gland epithelial cells during inflammation induced by latanoprost.

Exp Eye Res

November 2022

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University, The State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Guangdong Provincial Institute for Vision and Eye Research, #54 Xianlie South Road, Guangzhou, 510060, China. Electronic address:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of latanoprost on the secretion of cytokines and chemokines from meibomian gland epithelial cells, and to evaluate the modulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) and retinoid X receptor α (RXR-α) during latanoprost-induced inflammation. Mouse meibomian gland epithelial cells were cultured in proliferation and differentiation medium, respectively. Cells were exposed to latanoprost, rosiglitazone (PPAR-γ agonist), or LG100268 (RXR-α agonist), respectively.

Background: Anti-VEGF agents has been widely used in ocular diseases, but its safety for treating anterior segment disorders, the conclusions are controversial.

Methods: Several major databases, including CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE, were searched. Safety data from 18 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were used to compare anti-VEGF treatment in the ocular anterior segment in pterygium and neovascular glaucoma treatment with placebo/sham treatment for eye diseases.

Case report of ocular Kaposi's sarcoma.

BMC Ophthalmol

August 2017

The State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University, #54 Xian lie South Road, Guangzhou, 510060, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a type of cancer originating from blood vessels, often seen in patients with HIV/AIDS or those who have undergone immunosuppressive treatments.
  • A rare case of ocular KS was reported in a 13-year-old male who developed the condition post-stem cell transplant, despite not having HIV or HHV-8 infection.
  • Treatment involved a combination of surgical excision and grafts, including mitomycin C, which successfully cured the KS and helped prevent recurrence.

Collagen crosslinking of porcine sclera using genipin.

Acta Ophthalmol

June 2013

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University, The State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Guangzhou, China.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of collagen cross-linking induced by genipin in porcine sclera.

Methods: Porcine cadaver eyes were treated with genipin at concentrations (by w/v) of 0.01%, 0.

Purpose: The purpose was to determine the interchangeability of ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) for corneal opacity depth measurement.

Methods: Twenty-six eyes of 26 consecutive patients with corneal opacities were examined by both AS-OCT and UBM. The corneal thickness and the corneal opacity depth were measured and compared.

Aims: To evaluate anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in the diagnosis and treatment of Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) with severe corneal edema.

Methods: Nine eyes of 7 consecutive patients with suspected DMD with severe corneal edema due to different causes were imaged with the AS-OCT system. Configuration of Descemet's membrane (DM) was delineated before and after treatment, and quantitative analysis was performed.

Preparation of 0.05% FK506 suspension eyedrops and its pharmacokinetics after topical ocular administration.

J Ocul Pharmacol Ther

August 2009

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University, The State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Sun Yat-sen University, 54 south Xianlie Road, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: To investigate the stability of FK506 eye suspension and its pharmacokinetics in rabbit aqueous humor, as well as its distribution in eye tissues.

Methods: Sedimentation rate, flocculation value, redispersion time, rheological study, and accelerated experiment were determined for evaluating the stability of FK506 suspension. In a single-dose pharmacokinetic study, six rabbits were instilled a 25-microL drop of 0.
