Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress accelerate cellular aging, but their impact on different tissues varies. The cornea, known for its robust antioxidant defense systems, is relatively resistant to age-related diseases like cancer. However, the precise mechanisms by which the cornea maintains ROS homeostasis during aging remain unclear.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to define the normal range of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), macular ganglion cell layer (mGCL), and macular inner plexiform layer (mIPL) thickness in cynomolgus macaques, and explore their inter-relationship and correlation with age, refractive errors, and axial length (AL).
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we measured biometric and refractive parameters, and pRNFL/mGCL/mIPL thickness in 357 healthy cynomolgus macaques. Monkeys were divided into groups by age and spherical equivalent (SE).

Background: The value of quantitatively analyzing peripapillary capillary volume (PPCV) distribution was explored in normal and diabetic retinopathy (DR) eyes using dense B-scan optical coherence tomography angiography (DB OCTA).
Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study followed by prospective follow-up for those with DR, which enrolled 101 healthy subjects and 140 DR patients. Dense, automatic, real-time (DART) volume scans of DB OCTA were performed using a Spectralis HRA + OCT2.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic characteristics and elucidate the genotype-phenotype correlations of a large Chinese cohort with PAX6-related disorders.
Methods: Variants detected with exome sequencing were filtered through multistep bioinformatic and co-segregation analyses, and validated by Sanger sequencing. The related clinical data were collected, and cluster analysis and statistical analysis of the PAX6-related phenotypes across different variant groups were carried out.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and clinical outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) for treating iridocorneal endothelial (ICE) syndrome with a glaucoma drainage device (GDD).
Methods: In this retrospective, interventional case series, data of ICE eyes with a GDD treated with DMEK were collected at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. A total of 24 patients (24 eyes) with mild-to-moderate ocular anterior segment anomalies together with good intraocular pressure (IOP) control preoperatively were included between March 10, 2014, and November 11, 2021.

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) underlies the crux of many angiogenic eye disorders. Although medications that target vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are approved for treating CNV, their effectiveness in destroying new blood vessels is limited, and invasive intravitreal administration is required. Additionally, other drugs that destroy established neovessels, such as combretastatin A-4, may have systemic side effects that limit their therapeutic benefits.

Accurate evaluation of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) severity is vital for screening and proper treatment. Current deep-learning-based automated AI systems for assessing ROP severity do not follow clinical guidelines and are opaque. The aim of this study is to develop an interpretable AI system by mimicking the clinical screening process to determine ROP severity level.

Background: To explore the functional and morphological variations of retinal vessels in diabetes with no clinically detectable retinopathy (NDR) and mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and to establish a high-performance mild NPDR diagnostic model.
Methods: Normal subjects and type 2 diabetes patients with NDR and mild NPDR were recruited. Oxygen-saturation-related functional parameter (optical density ratio ODR) and morphological characteristics (fractal dimension D, vessel area rate VAR, mean vascular diameter D, vessel tortuosity τ) of different vascular areas were extracted with single fundus photography and comprehensively analyzed among groups.
