Introduction: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common disease among elderly men, and novel therapy methods are needed for drug-refractory ED. As an extracellular vesicle, stem cell-derived exosomes displayed erectile function improvement in rat ED models in some preclinical studies. However, the therapeutic efficacy has not been comprehensively evaluated.

Oral delivery of bi-autoantigens by bacterium-like particles (BLPs) against autoimmune diabetes in NOD mice.

December 2023

Nanjing Lishui People's Hospital, Zhongda Hospital Lishui Branch, Southeast University, Nanjing211200, China.

Induction of oral tolerance by vaccination with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM)-associated autoantigens exhibits great potential in preventing and treating this autoimmune disease. However, antigen degradation in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) limits the delivery efficiency of oral antigens. Previously, bacterium-like particles (BLPs) have been used to deliver a single-chain insulin (SCI-59) analog (BLPs-SCI-59) or the intracellular domain of insulinoma-associated protein 2 (IA-2ic) (BLPs-IA-2ic).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of two treatments, β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors (BLBLIs) and carbapenems, for complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in hospitalized patients.
  • An analysis of data from 557 patients revealed a 30-day treatment failure rate of 10.4%, with factors like immunocompromised status and septic shock increasing this risk.
  • The findings indicate that carbapenem treatments may be more effective than BLBLI treatments, especially for immunocompromised patients, but further randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.

Methods: Three Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) microarray datasets (GSE19491, GSE98461, and GSE152532) were downloaded, with GSE19491 and GSE98461 then being merged to form a training dataset. Hub genes capable of differentiating between ATB and LTBI were then identified through differential expression analyses and a WGCNA analysis of this training dataset. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were then used to gauge to the diagnostic accuracy of these hub genes in the test dataset (GSE152532).

Application of ultrasonography in neonatal lung disease: An updated review.

Front Pediatr

October 2022

Department of Ultrasound Medicine, Nanjing Lishui People's Hospital, Zhongda Hospital Lishui Branch, Southeast University, Nanjing, China.

Lung disease is often life-threatening for both preterm and term newborns. Therefore, an accurate and rapid diagnosis of lung diseases in newborns is crucial, as management strategies differ with different etiologies. To reduce the risk of radiation exposure derived from the conventionally used chest x-ray as well as computed tomography scans, lung ultrasonography (LUS) has been introduced in clinical practice to identify and differentiate neonatal lung diseases because of its radiation-free characteristic, convenience, high accuracy, and low cost.

Background: Influenza is a contagious disease that affects people of all ages and is linked to considerable mortality during epidemics and occasional outbreaks. Moreover, effective immunological biomarkers are needed for elucidating aetiology and preventing and treating severe influenza. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the key genes linked with the disease severity in influenza patients needing invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).

Tripartite motif (TRIM) 38 is a ubiquitin E3 protein ligase that is involved in various intracellular physiological processes. However, the role of TRIM38 in myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury remains to be elucidated. We aimed to establish an cellular hypoxia/reperfusion (H/R) model to explore the role and potential mechanisms of TRIM38 in H9c2, a rat cardiomyoblast cell line.

The role of tripartite motif (TRIM) 38, a ubiquitin E3 ligase regulating various pathophysiological processes, in cardiac fibrosis remains unclear. Here, a model of angiotensin II and myocardial infarction (MI)-induced fibrosis was established to explore its role in cardiac fibrosis and its underlying mechanisms. Cardiac fibrosis in the mouse MI model was mitigated by TRIM38 overexpression, but aggravated by its depletion.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the primary causes of cirrhosis and a major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma and liver-related death. It has been correlated with changes in the gut microbiota, which promote its development by regulating insulin resistance, bile acid and choline metabolism, and inflammation. Recent studies suggested a controversial role of the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) in the development of NAFLD.
