Article Synopsis
  • NAFLD is closely linked to type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and lifestyle changes are preferred treatments, but there's limited research on combining new glucose-lowering medications, semaglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist) and empagliflozin (an SGLT-2 inhibitor), for these patients.
  • This trial involves 105 overweight/obese participants and will last 52 weeks, comparing the effects of each drug alone and together on various health indicators, including liver health and blood sugar levels.
  • Findings from this study could shed light on the benefits of using both medications together in treating NAFLD associated with T2DM.

Interleukin 17A (IL-17A) is a key cytokine promoting osteoblast formation, which contributes to osteogenesis. IL-17A functions in autophagy inhibition within osteoblasts. Metallothionein-2 (MT-2), as an important reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging molecule, prevents oxidative stress from damaging osteoblast formation.

Precise classification has an important role in treatment of pressure injury (PI), while current machine-learning or deeplearning based methods of PI classification remain low accuracy. In this study, we developed a deeplearning based weighted feature fusion architecture for fine-grained classification, which combines a top-down and bottom-up pathway to fuse high-level semantic information and low-level detail representation. We validated it in our established database that consist of 1,519 images from multi-center clinical cohorts.

  • Microvascular invasion (MVI) significantly influences the risk of postoperative recurrence in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), prompting this study to focus on predicting recurrence and overall survival based on MVI grade.
  • Researchers collected and analyzed data from 703 patients who underwent curative hepatectomy to create and validate nomograms for predicting disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).
  • The developed nomograms demonstrated superior predictive accuracy compared to traditional HCC staging systems, with strong validation results indicating their potential usefulness in clinical settings.

Bile acids, gut microbiota, and therapeutic insights in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Cancer Biol Med

December 2023

Institute of Digestive Disease and Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, State Key Laboratory of Digestive Disease, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent and aggressive liver malignancy. The interplay between bile acids (BAs) and the gut microbiota has emerged as a critical factor in HCC development and progression. Under normal conditions, BA metabolism is tightly regulated through a bidirectional interplay between gut microorganisms and BAs.

TREM2 regulates microglial phagocytosis of synapses in innate immune tolerance.

Int Immunopharmacol

January 2024

Xiamen Key Laboratory of Brain Center, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University, and Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Neurodegenerative Disease and Aging Research, Institute of Neuroscience, School of Medicine, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian 361102, China. Electronic address:

Increasing evidence indicates that innate immune cells also possess immunological memory. Microglia are brain-resident innate immune cells and execute inflammatory and phagocytic functions upon environmental stimulation, during which processes triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) plays an important regulatory role. However, although microglia are known to exhibit innate immune memory related to inflammation when subjected to continuous inflammatory stimuli, whether microglia exhibit innate immune memory related to phagocytosis and whether TREM2 participates in innate immune memory of microglia remain unknown.

Introduction: Due to their ageing skin, older adults are more likely to develop incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). Although previous attempts to look at the risk factors for IAD in older adults were done, methodological barriers hindered an in-depth understanding. By investigating risk factors for IAD in the ageing population, the development of precise clinical interventions and guidance could be facilitated, which in turn would enhance patient care standards for incontinence management in this target group.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research indicates that circular RNA (circRNA) may play a role in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the specific impact of circMETTL15 on HCC development has yet to be explored.
  • This study investigates how circMETTL15 influences HCC through various assays—examining gene and protein expression, as well as cell behaviors like proliferation, migration, and invasion.
  • Findings reveal that circMETTL15 promotes HCC progression by regulating miR-944 and TMTC3, positioning circMETTL15 as a potential therapeutic target for treating HCC.
