SEC5, a component of the exocyst complex, plays important roles in cell survival and migration, but its role in early pregnancy has not been reported. Thus, the present study was performed to explore the functions of SEC5 in trophoblast cells.

Zearalenone induces NLRP3-dependent pyroptosis via activation of NF-κB modulated by autophagy in INS-1 cells.

Zearalenone (ZEA), one of the mycotoxins widely found in food and feed, can stimulate an inflammatory reaction. In the present study, we demonstrated that ZEA induced the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome even pyroptotic cell death in rat Insulinoma Cell Line (INS-1). Meanwhile, according to the results of western blot and TEM, the level of autophagy was elevated by ZEA, which protected against the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and inflammatory response caused by ZEA.

Introduction: Starting dialysis early or late both result in a low quality of life and a poor prognosis in patients undergoing haemodialysis. However, there remains no consensus on the optimal timing of dialysis initiation, mainly because of a lack of suitable methods to assess variations in dialysis initiation time. We have established a novel equation named DIFE (Dialysis Initiation based on Fuzzy-mathematics Equation) through a retrospective, multicentre clinical cohort study in China to determine the most suitable timing of dialysis initiation.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a common complications of Type 2 Diabetes and its main pathological feature is myelin sheath damage of peripheral nerve that was induced by Schwann cells (SCs) apoptosis. Increasing evidence suggested that taurine might play a role in improving DPN because of its ability to prevent SCs apoptosis. In this study, we explore the effect of taurine on preventing SCs apoptosis and its underlying mechanism.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an environmental endocrine disruptor widely employed in plastic bags, industrial paints, cosmetics and food packaging, which has been reported to be harmful to human physical health. Many studies have shown that DEHP causes reproductive system toxicity, but its cytotoxicity to islet cells is few to unknown. In our research, it was found that DEHP could induce apoptosis in INS-1 cells via autophagy and oxidative stress.

Photoreceptor cell development requires prostaglandin signaling in the zebrafish retina.

Photoreceptor cells are highly specialized sensory neurons capable of visual phototransduction. The connecting cilia in the retinal photoreceptors link the inner segment to the outer segment and mediate the transport of opsins in vision. Although our previous study demonstrates that Prostaglandin E2 (PGE) signaling is required for ciliogenesis in zebrafish, its roles in retinal ciliogenesis and photoreceptor cell development remain unknown.

Prognostic Value of Hemoglobin A1c Levels in Postmenopausal Diabetic Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) for Acute Coronary Syndrome.

BACKGROUND The purpose of our study was to analyze the clinical value of glycosylated hemoglobin Alc (HbA1c) levels in postmenopausal women with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and diabetes following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 173 consecutive postmenopausal patients with comorbid diabetes underwent PCI for primary ACS were enrolled in this study. Serum HbA1c levels were measured prior to PCI, and baseline clinical characteristics of all patients were collected.

Long-Term Survival Differences Between T1-2 Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer and Corresponding Ductal Carcinoma After Breast-Conserving Surgery: A Propensity-Scored Matched Longitudinal Cohort Study.

Background: The role of histology subtype on the prognosis of T1-2 breast cancer patients receiving breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is not clear.

Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program was used to compare overall survival, second primary cancer-free survival (CFS), and local recurrence risk (LR) for patients with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), both receiving BCS.

Results: The study enrolled 196,688 patients with T1-2 disease receiving BCS, including 12,906 with ILC and 183,782 with IDC.

Identification of novel biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma using transcriptome analysis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of death from cancer in the world. To comprehensively investigate the utility of microRNAs (miRNAs) and protein-encoding transcripts (messenger RNAs [mRNAs]) in HCC as potential biomarkers for early detection and diagnosis, we exhaustively mined genomic data from three available omics datasets (GEO, Oncomine, and TCGA), analyzed the overlaps among gene expression studies from 920 hepatocellular carcinoma samples and 508 healthy (or adjacent normal) liver tissue samples available from six laboratories, and identified 178 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with HCC. Paired with miRNA and lncRNA data, we identified 23 core genes that were targeted by nine differentially expressed miRNAs and 21 HCC-specific lncRNAs.

Acrolein induces NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis and suppresses migration via ROS-dependent autophagy in vascular endothelial cells.

Acrolein is a common environmental pollutant that has been linked to cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis (AS). Increasing evidence demonstrates that acrolein impairs the cardiovascular system by targeting vascular endothelial cells, but the underlying mechanisms haven't been completely elucidated. In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), we observed that acrolein treatment induced cell reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, autophagy, pyroptosis and reduced cell migration.

Diagnostic value of fluorine-18 deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in deep sternal wound infection.

Objectives: Deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) is a refractory complication after heart surgery, and debridement is the first-line treatment. The accurate identification of the extent of the infection is the key to successful debridement. The present study assessed the diagnostic accuracy of fluorine-18 deoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for identifying the infected area of DSWI.

Long-term follow-up of patients treated with entecavir and peginterferon add-on therapy for HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B infection: ARES long-term follow-up.

Addition of peginterferon alpha (PEG-IFN add-on) to entecavir (ETV) treatment after a short lead-in phase results in more response than ETV monotherapy in HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B infection (CHB). This study is the first to assess long-term efficacy of this treatment strategy. Patients who received ETV ± 24 weeks of PEG-IFN add-on in a global trial (ARES study) and completed follow-up were eligible to participate in this observational LTFU study if they had at least one combined HBeAg and HBV DNA measurement beyond week 96 of the ARES study.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of certolizumab pegol (CZP) in combination with methotrexate (MTX) in Chinese patients with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and an inadequate response to MTX.

Methods: This 24-week, phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 30 centres across China. A total of 430 patients were randomised 3:1 to receive CZP 200 mg every 2 weeks (loading dose: 400 mg CZP at Weeks 0, 2 and 4) plus MTX or placebo (PBO) plus MTX.

The mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis is pivotal to the maintenance of an array of physiological processes. The physical contact and association between ER and mitochondria, known as the ER-mitochondria microdomains or mitochondria-associated ER membrane (MAM), temporally and spatially regulates the mitochondria/ER structure and function. More evidence suggests a role for MAMs in energy production, cellular contraction and mobility, and normal extracellular signal transmission.

Long-term feasibility and biocompatibility of directly microsurgically implanted intrafascicular electrodes in free roaming rabbits.

Novel neural interfaces capable of reliably capturing electrical signals are crucial for the development of prostheses. Longitudinal intrafascicular electrodes (LIFEs) have been proposed as a promising technology, and their feasibility and biocompatibility need to be investigated for long-term implantation. In this study, custom-designed 95%Pt-5%Ir intrafascicular electrodes were implanted into the sciatic nerves of 14 rabbits using our novel direct microsurgical technique.
