Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nocturnal enuresis (NE) represent two clinically prevalent pediatric disorders that frequently present as comorbidities. OSA, characterized by recurrent upper airway collapse during sleep, and NE, defined as involuntary voiding during sleep, collectively contribute to psychosocial distress in children. Emerging evidence suggests that OSA in children can cause NE through multiple mechanisms, though the pathophysiological interplay involving altered arousal thresholds and hormonal dysregulation remains incompletely elucidated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between short-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) and asthma-related hospital admissions in Shanghai, analyzing data from 930 hospitalized patients between 2018 and 2022.
  • Each increase of 10 μg/m³ in various PM components (like BC, NO, NH, SO, and OM) was found to elevate the risk of asthma admissions, particularly affecting women, individuals aged 65 and older, and during colder seasons.
  • The findings suggest that reducing exposure to air pollution could help lower asthma hospitalization rates, highlighting the significance of PM components in public health.

J Vis Exp

February 2025

Clinical Systems Biology Laboratories, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University; Department of Neurology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University; The Academy of Medical Sciences, Zhengzhou University;

Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP, ΔΨm) is critical for mitochondrial functions, including ATP synthesis, ion transport, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and the import of proteins encoded by the nucleus. Existing methods for measuring ΔΨm typically use lipophilic cation dyes, such as Rhodamine 800 and tetramethylrhodamine methyl ester (TMRM), but these are limited by low specificity and are not well-suited for in vivo applications. To address these limitations, we have developed a novel protocol utilizing genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs).

Plasmonic nanohelix arrays, exhibiting strong circular dichroism, are among the most promising optical chiral metamaterials. However, achieving chiral plasmonic effects in the visible range remains challenging with current manufacturing techniques, as it requires structures small enough to resonate at visible wavelengths. Herein, we propose a novel strategy for constructing nanohelix arrays through patch-enthalpy-driven self-confined self-assembly of Janus nanoparticles.

Habitat and temporal variation can both influence microbial community dynamics, although their relative importance in reservoir buffer zones with complex hydrology regimes and dramatically altered environments remains controversial. To elucidate this, we investigated spatiotemporal variation in soil bacterial diversity and ecological processes from the flooding period to the dry period (April and June, respectively) using high-throughput 16S amplicon sequencing in three habitats (abandoned cropland, grassland, and woodland) within the Chushandian Reservoir's buffer strip, China. The results showed that habitat was more important than temporal variation in shaping soil bacterial diversity and ecological processes in the reservoir buffer zone.

Development of a novel label-free NIR aptasensor based on triphenylmethane dyes for rapid and sensitive detection of copper ions.

Anal Methods

March 2025

Henan Linker Technology Key Laboratory, College of Advanced Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CAIST), Henan University of Technology, Zhengzhou 450001, China.

Heavy metal pollution, particularly from copper ions (Cu), poses a significant threat to both the ecological environment and human health. However, traditional copper ion analysis techniques are often hindered by the need for expensive equipment, labor-intensive sample preparation and skilled operation, which limits their effectiveness for field and real-time applications. In this work, we report a novel near-infrared aptamer sensor (NIRApt) that originates from the binding reaction between the DNA aptamer Apt and the fluorescent small molecule crystal violet (CV), enabling rapid detection of Cu through the competitive effect of Cu with Apt.
