The generation of radicals through photo-Fenton-like reactions demonstrates significant potential for remediating emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in complex aqueous environments. However, the excitonic effect, induced by Coulomb interactions between photoexcited electrons and holes, reduces carrier utilization efficiency in these systems. In this study, we develop Cu single-atom-loaded covalent organic frameworks (Cu/COFs) as models to modulate excitonic effects.

A substantial body of research has explored the relationship between inequality and health, yet little is known about the gender-specific effects and pathways through which inequality affects health outcomes. This study focuses on China, a country characterized by high income inequality and uneven health distribution across social groups. In Study 1, repeated nationally representative cross-sectional data from the Chinese General Social Survey is utilized (N = 3798 for 2017, N = 1578 for 2015, and N = 2827 for 2008), revealing that perceived inequality negatively affects self-rated health, particularly among women.

The overall maximization of photocatalytic HO production efficiency urgently requires the comprehensive optimization of each step in multiplex photocatalysis. Despite numerous endeavors, isolated researches focusing on single efficiencies hinder further advancements in overall catalytic activity. In this work, a series of imine-linked COFs (TT-COF-X), incorporating electronically tunable functional groups (X = ─H, ─OMe, ─OH, ─Br), are rationally fabricated for visible-light-driven HO production via a dual-channel pathway involving 2e water oxidation and 2e oxygen reduction.

In the domain of heterogeneous catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), high-valent metal-oxo (HVMO) species are widely recognized as potent oxidants for the abatement of organic pollutants. However, the generation selectivity and efficiency of HVMO are often constrained by stringent requirements for catalyst adsorption sites and electron transfer efficiency. In this study, a single-atom catalyst, Cu/CNP&S, is synthesized featuring multiple types (planar/axial) of heteroatom coordination via an H-bond-assisted self-assembly strategy.

Environ Res

April 2024

Beijing Key Lab for Source Control Technology of Water Pollution, Engineering Research Center for Water Pollution Source Control & Eco-remediation, College of Environmental Science & Engineering, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing, 100083, China. Electronic address:

Recovering waste NH to be used as a source of nitrogen fertilizer or liquid fuel has recently attracted much attention. Current methods mainly utilize activated carbon or metal-organic frameworks to capture NH, but are limited due to low NH adsorption capacity and high cost, respectively. In this study, novel porous materials that are low cost and easy to synthesize were prepared as NH adsorbents by precipitation polymerization with acid optimization.

BMI-1 activates hepatic stellate cells to promote the epithelial-mesenchymal transition of colorectal cancer cells.

World J Gastroenterol

June 2023

Department of General Surgery, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310016, Zhejiang Province, China.

Background: Activated hepatic stellate cells (aHSCs) are the major source of cancer-associated fibroblasts in the liver. Although the crosstalk between aHSCs and colorectal cancer (CRC) cells supports liver metastasis (LM), the mechanisms are largely unknown.

Aim: To explore the role of BMI-1, a polycomb group protein family member, which is highly expressed in LM, and the interaction between aHSCs and CRC cells in promoting CRC liver metastasis (CRLM).

Chemosphere

August 2023

College of Environment, Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou, 310032, Zhejiang, China; Shaoxing Research Institute, Zhejing University of Technology, Zhejiang, China. Electronic address:

To ascertain the reaction variables on o-chloroaniline (o-ClA) mineralization, total nitrogen (TN) removal rate, and N-species distribution, o-ClA was subjected to catalytic supercritical water oxidation (CSCWO) in a fused quartz tube reactor (FQTR). The findings demonstrated that when the temperature, reaction time, and excess oxidant were 400 °C, 90 min, and 150%, respectively, the mineralization rate of o-ClA could reach more than 95%. Moreover, potential degradation pathways of o-ClA in supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) was proposed according to the GC-MS results.

Activated carbon and metal organic frameworks have been tested as NH recovery adsorbents, however, they are limited due to low NH adsorption capacity and high cost, respectively. In this study, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) polymers as the representative ester plastics were tested, and their structure and adsorption sites were regulated using HNO, HCl, or HSO with varied H concentrations. The results showed that the EGDMA polymers all used hydrolysis which promoted NH adsorption via different mechanisms.

Ethylene dimethacrylate used as an NH adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and selectivity.

Chemosphere

April 2022

Beijing Key Lab for Source Control Technology of Water Pollution, Engineering Research Center for Water Pollution Source Control & Eco-remediation, College of Environmental Science & Engineering, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing, 100083, China. Electronic address:

NH molecularly imprinted polymers (NH-MIPs) were synthesized that could successfully separate and recover NH during sludge aerobic composting; however, increased toluene usage during the adsorbent preparation incurred a high cost and severe environmental risks. The purpose of this study was to reduce toluene usage by optimizing the reagent composition of NH-MIPs, based on maintaining a high NH adsorption capacity and selectivity. Five adsorbent groups, including NH-MIPs, and NH-Ethylene dimethacrylate adsorbents (NH-EGDMA) with 0%, 75%, 90%, and 100% toluene reduction efficiencies, were prepared and tested for their adsorption performance.

miR-545 promotes colorectal cancer by inhibiting transferring in the non-normal ferroptosis signaling.

Aging (Albany NY)

December 2021

Department of General Surgery, Affiliated Hangzhou First People Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province 310006, PR China.

In this study, we examined whether and how miR-545 modulates ferroptosis in colorectal cancer (CRC). HT-29 and HCT-116 human CRC cell viability was examined using a CCK-8 assay and malondialdehyde (MDA) and Fe levels were measured after treatment with the ferroptosis inducers Eradicator of Ras and ST (erastin) and Ras selective lethal 3 (RSL3) with or without miR-545 overexpression or knockdown vectors. Our results demonstrate that miR-545 overexpression inhibited, while miR-545 knockdown further increased, erastin and RSL3-induced upregulation of MDA, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and Fe levels.

Ghrelin, which has been shown to improve memory retention, is an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor. Recombination activating gene 1 (Rag1), which plays a critical role in the development and maturation of lymphocytes in the immune system, is also expressed in the central nervous system, particularly in the hippocampus, and has been implicated in memory formation. In the current study, the effects of ghrelin on Rag1 expression in the hippocampus and spatial memory performance in wild-type and Rag1 knockout (KO) mice were examined.

[Thermophiles and their working mechanisms in degrading excess sludge: a review].

Ying Yong Sheng Tai Xue Bao

July 2012

Academy of Water Science and Environmental Engineering, Zhejing University, Hangzhou 310058, China.

Activated sludge process is widely used in treating a wide variety of wastewater, but the by-product is the large amount of excess sludge. To treat the excess sludge properly could spend 25%-60% of the total cost of wastewater treatment, while improperly treating the sludge could cause serious secondary pollution. Therefore, the reduction of excess sludge is becoming a rising challenge.
