Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β) is a multifunctional cytokine that regulates cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of the TGF-β signaling is one of the major mechanisms underlying tumor progression. We have previously reported that anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) phosphorylates Smad4 at Tyr95, which compromises the DNA-binding ability of Smad4 and thus renders ALK-positive cancer cells resistant to TGF-β tumor-suppressive action.

Herein, a generalized method by optimizing gold nanoparticles for intraoperative detection and photothermal ablation of tumor margins is introduced. These nanoparticles are detectable by highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering imaging.

Myricetin and its glycosides are important flavonols commonly found in plants, and they are natural organic compounds with diverse pharmacological activities. Numerous studies have demonstrated that myricetin and its glycosides are strong antioxidants that have great potential in preventing, alleviating and assisting the treatment of chronic non-infectious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, myricetin and its glycosides also have antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, liver protection and other pharmacological activities.

NSUN5, a gene encodes a cytosine-5 RNA methyltransferase, is rarely mentioned in cancers. Our study is the first one to evaluate the role of NSUN5 in the progression of colorectal cancer. Data from TCGA was used to show the different expression of NSUN5 between CRC tumor tissues and adjacent normal ones.

Objective: To construct a recombinant adenovirus with artificial microRNA targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to inhibit the proliferation and induce the apoptosis of tumor cells.
Methods: An artificial microRNA (amiR) targeting EGFR was designed and cloned into an adenovirus shuttle plasmid to obtain pDC312-SLPI (secretory leukoprotease inhibitor)-EGFR amiR-pA. Then it was co-transfected into 293 cells with the adenovirus backbone plasmid pBHGloxΔE1, 3Cre to pack the recombinant adenovirus Ad-SLPI-EGFR amiR.

Anisotropic nanocomposite films of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) and graphene oxide (GO) were fabricated by blade-coating of the aqueous mixture to align the substance and subsequent solvent evaporation to freeze the oriented structure. Owing to the anisotropic structure, the composite films showed anisotropic mechanical properties and response to external stimuli. The influences of GO content, stretch rate, and relative humidity on the anisotropic structure and mechanical properties of the films were investigated.

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), which is a noninvasive form of mechanical energy, has been utilized as a clinical therapy for bone fracture healing. However, the mechanism how LIPUS affects osteoclast formation and osteoclast activity, has not been fully detailed. Here we found that LIPUS inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation in vitro, characterized by decreased number and area of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) positive cells.

To observe the effects of different concentrations of sevoflurane on synaptotagmin 1 (Syt1) expression, synaptic long term depression (LTD), and paired pulse depression (PPD) in the rat hippocampus as well as to investigate the association between these effects and the cognitive function of rats. A total of 24 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups: the control group (group A), which inhaled air; group B, which inhaled 0.65 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) sevoflurane for 2 h; and group C, which inhaled 1.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a major cause of mortality in the general population. However, the molecular phenotypes and therapeutic targets of AMI patients remain unclear. By profiling genome-wide transcripts and microRNAs (miRNAs) in a cohort of 23 AMI patients and 23 non-AMI patients, we found 218 dysregulated genes identified in the infarcted heart tissues from AMI patients relative to non-AMI controls.

Aim: This study aims to investigate the localization and expression of protein kinase C-beta I and beta II in kidney cortex of diabetic nephropathy mice and their roles in telmisartan treatment.
Methods: 18 mice were randomly divided into three groups: normal group, diabetic nephropathy group and telmisartan-treated group. The localization and expression of protein kinase C-beta I and beta II were measured with confocal immunofluorescence laser scanning microscopy, immunohistochemistry and western blotting.

Localized (primary) pulmonary amyloidosis associated with pulmonary low-grade B cell lymphoma is rarely occurred. Here we report an unusual case of nodular pulmonary amyloidosis and obvious ossification due to primary pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma with extensive plasmacytic differentiation in a 59-year-old man; moreover, two bronchial lymph nodes were involved histologically. The patient underwent a left lower lobectomy along with mediastinal lymphadenectomy.

Background: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a long-standing inflammation of the exocrine pancreas, which typically results in severe and constant abdominal pain. Previous studies on the mechanisms underlying CP-induced pain have primarily focused on the peripheral nociceptive system. A role for a central mechanism in the mediation or modulation of abdominal pain is largely unknown.

A certain proportion of patients with initial Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) management require ancillary procedures to increase the stone-free rate. In this study, we aim to analyze the efficacy and safety of flexible ureteroscopy combined with holmium laser lithotripsy (F-UL) for treatment of residual calculi after PCNL by comparison with extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL). Total of 96 patients with residual renal calculi (4 mm to 20 mm) after PCNL was enrolled from May 2010 to March 2013.

This study was designed to investigate the role of MCT1 in the development of cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer and its possible relationship with Fas. We found the expression of MCT1 was obviously increased both in cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer tissue and A2780/CP cells compared with sensitive ovarian cancer tissue and cell lines A2780. And in A2780 cells treated with Cisplatin, the expression of MCT1 increased in a concentration-dependent manner, MCT1 knockdown attenuates cisplatin-induced cell viability.

Sclareol is a natural product initially isolated form Salvia sclarea which possesses immune-regulation and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the anti-osteoarthritic properties of sclareol have not been investigated. The present study is aimed at evaluating the potential effects of sclareol in interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-induced rabbit chondrocytes as well as an experimental rabbit knee osteoarthritis model induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT).

Objective: To describe the characteristics of magnetic resonance (MR) signals generated by lipiodol and to assess the influence on MR imaging of hepatoma nodule.
Methods: Pure lipiodol and lipiodol emulsions mixed with 76% urografin in different ratio were imaged by both CT and MR; quantitative T(1) and T(2) measurements of lipiodol were performed. Fourty-one SD rats with transplanted walker-256 sarcoma in liver were randomly divided into six groups: 0.
Objective: To explore the possible effect of transforming growth factor-beta(1) (TGF -beta(1)) on the development of renal fibrosis in human mesengial proliferative glomerulonephritis (MsPGN).
Methods: Immunohistochemistry method, sirius red staining polarization microscopy and the computer imaging analysis system were used to detect the expression of TGF-beta(1), the distribution of collagen I, collagen III and collagen IV.
Result: In MsPGN with renal fibrosis, collagen IV was increased markedly, and collagen I and collagen III appeared in the expanded mesengial matrix abnormally.
