Manganese (Mn) is a neurotoxin that has been etiologically linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases in the case of overexposure. It is widely accepted that overexposure to Mn leads to manganism, which has clinical symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease (PD), and is referred to as parkinsonism. Astrocytes have been reported to scavenge and degrade extracellular α-synuclein (α-Syn) in the brain.

Membranes of Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity PIM-1 for Gas Separation: Modification Strategies and Meta-Analysis.

Nanomicro Lett

January 2025

Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, The University of Manchester, Manchester, M13 9PL, UK.

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have received considerable attention for making high-performance membranes for carbon dioxide separation over the last two decades, owing to their highly permeable porous structures. However, challenges regarding its relatively low selectivity, physical aging, and plasticisation impede relevant industrial adoptions for gas separation. To address these issues, several strategies including chain modification, post-modification, blending with other polymers, and the addition of fillers, have been developed and explored.

Photocatalytic Three-Component Reductive Coupling Synthesis of -Difluorohomoallyl Secondary Amines.

J Org Chem

January 2025

Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Advanced Catalysis Materials, College of Chemistry and Materials Sciences, Zhejiang Normal University, 688 Yingbin Road, Jinhua 321004, P. R. China.

-Difluorohomoallyl amines, an important class of -difluoroalkenes, are prevalent moieties in many bioactive compounds. However, limited methods are suitable for the synthesis of this type of compound containing secondary amines. Here, we display a photocatalytic multicomponent protocol for the synthesis of -difluoroalkenes containing secondary amines, which makes use of readily available materials: arylamines, alkyl aldehydes, and α-trifluoromethyl alkenes.

Hydrogel Strain Sensors for Integrating Into Dynamic Organ-on-a-Chip.

Small

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Biomass Chemical Engineering (Education Ministry), College of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310027, China.

Current hydrogel strain sensors have never been integrated into dynamic organ-on-a-chip (OOC) due to the lack of sensitivity in aqueous cell culture systems. To enhance sensing performance, a novel strain sensor is presented in which the MXene layer is coated on the bottom surface of a pre-stretched anti-swelling hydrogel substrate of di-acrylated Pluronic F127 (F127-DA) and chitosan (CS) for isolation from the cell culture on the top surface. The fabricated strain sensors display high sensitivity (gauge factor of 290.

One key challenge in the study of nonadiabatic dynamics in open quantum systems is to balance computational efficiency and accuracy. Although Ehrenfest dynamics (ED) is computationally efficient and well-suited for large complex systems, ED often yields inaccurate results. To address these limitations, we improve the accuracy of the traditional ED by adding a random force (E + σ).

Layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are attractive cathode candidates for rechargeable secondary batteries because of their high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, LTMOs suffer from severe capacity attenuation, voltage decay, and sluggish kinetics, resulting from irreversible lattice oxygen evolution and unstable cathode-electrolyte interface. Besides, LTMOs accumulate surface residual alkali species, like hydroxides and carbonates, during synthesis, limiting their practical application.

The epitaxial growth of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) on sapphire substrates enables the formation of single-crystalline monolayer MoS₂ with exceptional material properties on a wafer scale. Despite this achievement, the underlying growth mechanisms remain a subject of debate. The epitaxial interface is critical for understanding these mechanisms, yet its exact atomic configuration has previously been unclear.

Antimicrobial resistance and impaired bone regeneration are the great challenges in treating infected bone defects. Its recurrent and resistant nature, high incidence rate, long-term hospitalization, and high medical costs have driven the efforts of the scientific community to develop new therapies to improve the situation. Considering the complex microenvironment and persistent mechanisms mediated by resistant bacteria, it is crucial to develop an implant with enhanced osseointegration and sustained and effective infection clearance effects.

Bifunctional Group Modulation Strategy Enables MR-TADF Electroluminescence Toward BT.2020 Green Light Standard.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Research Center of Energy Optoelectronic Materials and Devices, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ningbo, 315201, P. R. China.

Herein, a parallel "bifunctional group" modulation method is proposed to achieve controlled modulation of the emission wavelength and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) values. As a result, three proof-of-concept emitters, namely DBNDS-TPh, DBNDS-DFPh, and DBNDS-CNPh, are designed and synthesized, with the first functional dibenzo[b,d]thiophene unit concurrently reducing the bandgap and elevate their triplet state energy. A second functional group 1,1':3',1″-triphenyl, and electron acceptors 1,3-difluorobenzene and benzonitrile, respectively, to deepen the HOMO and LUMO levels.

The cyclic stability of aqueous zinc-manganese batteries (ZMBs) is greatly restricted by the side reaction of the anode and the irreversibility of the cathode. In this work, a solid-liquid hybrid electrolyte mixing by traditional ZnSO-based electrolyte and diatomite (denoted as Dtm) is proposed that exhibits good compatibility and reversibility in both the anode interface and the cathode interface. The abundant hydroxyl groups at the anode interface disturb the hydrogen bond network of water molecule, which weakens the corrosion of the active water to Zn anode.

Background: Myocardial injury is common after brain injury; however, few studies have reported serial cardiac troponin (cTn) measurements to distinguish whether the myocardial injury is acute or chronic. The fourth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction introduced for the first time the criteria for acute myocardial injury (AMI). We aimed to investigate the prevalence and prognostic implications of AMI in primary intracerebral hemorrhage.

The amniote pallium, a vital component of the forebrain, exhibits considerable evolutionary divergence across species and mediates diverse functions, including sensory processing, memory formation, and learning. However, the relationships among pallial subregions in different species remain poorly characterized, particularly regarding the identification of homologous neurons and their transcriptional signatures. In this study, we utilized single-nucleus RNA sequencing to examine over 130 000 nuclei from the macaque ( ) neocortex, complemented by datasets from humans ( ), mice ( ), zebra finches ( ), turtles ( ), and lizards ( s), enabling comprehensive cross-species comparison.

DNA2, a multifunctional enzyme with structure-specific nuclease, 5 -to-3 helicase, and DNA-dependent ATPase activities, plays a pivotal role in the cellular response to DNA damage. However, its involvement in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury remains to be elucidated. This study investigated the involvement of DNA2 in cerebral I/R injury using conditional knockout (cKO) mice ( -Cre) subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), an established model of cerebral I/R.
