Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on human polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) as a potential target for treating nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), emphasizing its specific polo-box domain (PBD) that interacts with various substrates.
  • - Researchers introduced a genetic optimization strategy to enhance the binding affinity of a 10-sized 6-mer phosphopeptide array by utilizing both natural (20) and unnatural (34) amino acids, leading to the design of three potent phosphopeptides with varying affinities.
  • - Among the designed peptides, uPP20 demonstrated strong anti-tumor activity against NPC cells when combined with a cell-penetrating sequence, while the study also established a preferred 6-mer binding motif for PL

Background: Children affected by tethered cord syndrome (TCS) encounter multifaceted challenges encompassing educational, familial and social spheres, underscoring the significance of a holistic comprehension of their subjective emotional well-being and life encounters. Nonetheless, healthcare professionals tend to prioritise the physical functionality of the afflicted individuals throughout the treatment and rehabilitation process, often neglecting the emotional experiences and requirements of these children as they transition into posthospitalization phases.

Aim: To advance the subjective experiences and perceptions of children with TCS upon reintegration into their families, educational institutions and wider societal contexts subsequent to their discharge from medical facilities.

Intercellular communication between tumor cells and immune cells regulates tumor progression including positive communication with immune activation and negative communication with immune escape. An increasing number of methods are employed to suppress the dominant negative communication in tumors such as PD-L1/PD-1. However, how to effectively improve positive communication is still a challenge.

Accumulating evidence has suggested that curcumin may protect against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). However, biological mechanisms vary across studies, limiting the clinical applicability of these findings. We performed a meta-analysis on publications evaluating curcumin administration in rat models of CIRI.

An Illustrated Guide to the Imaging Evolution of COVID in Non-Epidemic Areas of Southeast China.

Front Mol Biosci

May 2021

Department of Radiology, Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

By analyzing the CT manifestations and evolution of COVID in non-epidemic areas of southeast China, analyzing the developmental abnormalities and accompanying signs in the early and late stages of the disease, providing imaging evidence for clinical diagnosis and identification, and assisting in judging disease progression and monitoring prognosis. This retrospective and multicenter study included 1,648 chest CT examinations from 693 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection from 16 hospitals of southeast China between January 19 and March 27, 2020. Six trained radiologists analyzed and recorded the distribution and location of the lesions in the CT images of these patients.

While the RT-PCR is the silver bullet test for confirming the COVID-19 infection, it is limited by the lack of reagents, time-consuming, and the need for specialized labs. As an alternative, most of the prior studies have focused on Chest CT images and Chest X-Ray images using deep learning algorithms. However, these two approaches cannot always be used for patients' screening due to the radiation doses, high costs, and the low number of available devices.

The worldwide severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak has led to the rapid spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The quantitative real time PCR (qPCR) is widely used as the gold standard for clinical detection of SARS-CoV-2. However, more and more infected patients are relapsing after discharge, which suggests qPCR may fail to detect the virus in some cases.

Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy has become a gold standard for the treatment of congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS). There have been recent reports on the use of transumbilical single-site laparoscopic surgery for congenital HPS; however, using transumbilical single-site laparoscopic surgery in pediatric cases is still controversial due to the difficulty with manipulation. In this study, some preliminary experience with the application of a novel transumbilical single-site laparoscopic approach in congenital HPS is described.
