Variations in molecular evolutionary rate have been widely investigated among lineages and genes. However, it remains an open question whether fast rate of molecular evolution is driven by natural selection or random drift, and how the fast rate is linked to metabolic rate. Additionally, previous studies on fast molecular evolution have been largely restricted to concatenated matrix of genes or a few specifically selected genes, but less is known for individual genes at the genome-wide level.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The SOCS gene family plays a crucial role in regulating cytokine signaling and has not been extensively studied in the large yellow croaker fish, although it affects immune and inflammatory processes significantly.
  • - This study identified and analyzed 13 SOCS genes in the large yellow croaker, showing high evolutionary conservation and structural similarity among them.
  • - Expression patterns revealed different responses of SOCS genes under stress: LcSOCS1b decreased under hypoxia but increased significantly after infection with a particular pathogen, indicating varied roles in stress responses.

Electronic address:

Microcystis typically forms colonies under natural conditions, which contributes to occurrence and prevalence of algal blooms. The colonies consist of Microcystis and associated bacteria (AB), embedded in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Previous studies indicate that AB can induce Microcystis to form colonies, however the efficiency is generally low and results in a uniform morphotype.

School of Marine Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, and Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai), Zhuhai 519082, China; Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Resources and Coastal Engineering, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

We investigated spatial heterogeneity and diel variations in bacterioplankton and pico-nanoeukaryote communities, and potential biotic interactions at the extinction stage of the Ulva prolifera bloom in the Jiaozhou Bay, Yellow Sea. It was found that the presence of Ulva canopies significantly promoted the cell abundance of heterotrophic bacteria, raised evenness, and altered the community structure of bacterioplankton. A diel pattern was solely significant for pico-nanoeukaryote community structure.

Microeukaryotes play crucial roles in the microbial loop of freshwater ecosystems, functioning both as primary producers and bacterivorous consumers. However, understanding the assembly of microeukaryotic communities and their functional composition in freshwater lake ecosystems across diverse environmental gradients remains limited. Here, we utilized amplicon sequencing of 18S rRNA gene and multivariate statistical analyses to examine the spatiotemporal and biogeographical patterns of microeukaryotes in water columns (at depths of 0.

Vibrio species represent the predominant and significant pathogen in global marine fish and shellfish aquaculture. Vibrio species are ubiquitously presented in Artemia cyst hatcheries, and their notable colonization in live prey, particularly Artemia nauplii, leads to the transmission of these pathogens into the digestive system of larval organisms, causing serious problems in Vibriosis in marine aquaculture. To eliminate the Vibriospecies in Artemia nauplii, trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) was used for sterilization of the nauplii.
