[Five-year survival analysis of gastric cancer from population-based cancer registration data in Zhejiang province, China].

To analyze epidemiology of gastric cancer five-year survival distribution in Zhejiang population-based cancer registration. The follow-up data of registrated gastric cancer cases diagnosed from 2008 to 2019 in 22 national cancer registry areas of Zhejiang Province were collected and divided into three diagnostic periods: 2008-2011, 2012-2015 and 2016-2019 to calculate five-year observed survival rates (OSRs), five-year relative survival rates (RSRs) and five-year age-standardized relative survival rates (ARSRs). The distribution of population characteristics (including gender, urban/rural, age group and occupation) and clinical characteristics (including the highest diagnostic institution, sub-site, pathological type and degree of differentiation) of gastric cancer survival rates in each period were analysed.

Survival of 7,311 lung cancer patients by pathological stage and histological classification: a multicenter hospital-based study in China.

Background: Representative prognostic data by clinical characteristics for lung cancer is not yet available in China. This study aimed to calculate the survival of lung cancer patients with different pathological evaluations, explore their predictive effects and provide information for prognosis improvement.

Methods: In this multicenter cohort study, primary lung cancer patients diagnosed in 17 hospitals at three distinct levels in China between 2011-2013 were enrolled and followed up till 2020.

Circulating phosphorus concentration and risk of prostate cancer: a Mendelian randomization study.

Background: Recent observational studies have suggested that circulating phosphorus concentrations are positively associated with the risk of prostate cancer. However, little is known about the causal direction of the association.

Objectives: To explore the potential causal relation between circulating phosphorus and risk of prostate cancer, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an immune disease in the intestine caused by interplay between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors such as diets. Here we analyzed the therapeutic effect of intermittent calorie restriction with a fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced chronic IBD model in mice.

Development of a serum miRNA panel for detection of early stage non-small cell lung cancer.

Minimally invasive testing for early detection of lung cancer to improve patient survival is a major unmet clinical need. This study aimed to develop and validate a serum multi-microRNA (multimiR) panel as a minimally invasive test for early detection of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) regardless of smoking status, gender, and ethnicity. Our study included 744 NSCLC cases and 944 matched controls, including smokers and nonsmokers, male and female, with Asian and Caucasian subjects.

Clinical characteristics and survival of 5283 esophageal cancer patients: A multicenter study from eighteen hospitals across six regions in China.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the potential determining epidemiological and clinical risk factors affecting the survival of esophageal cancer (EC) patients across multiple hospitals in China.

Methods: This was a multicenter study comprising of newly diagnosed EC cases from Beijing, Hebei, Henan, Hubei, Zhejiang, and Guangdong Province of China. Their baseline characteristics and treatment methods data were collected from their medical records.

Multi-Infection Patterns and Co-infection Preference of 27 Human Papillomavirus Types Among 137,943 Gynecological Outpatients Across China.

The epidemiological feature of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is distinctive in China. We aimed to investigate the multi-infection patterns and co-infection preference of 27 HPV types among gynecological outpatients across China. Overall 137,943 gynecological outpatients were recruited from eight tertiary hospitals located in seven regions of China, between July 1st, 2014 and December 31st, 2016.

Deregulation of CSMD1 targeted by microRNA-10b drives gastric cancer progression through the NF-κB pathway.

This study aimed to investigate the oncogenic activity of microRNA-10b by targeting CUB and sushi multiple domains protein 1 (CSMD1) in human gastric cancer (GC) and the underlying mechanisms. The expression of CSMD1 in human GC tissues was evaluated by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), immunoblotting, and immunohistochemical analysis. The expressive abundance of microRNA-10b was detected by stem-loop RT-PCR.

Fine Mapping in Chromosome 3q28 Identified Two Variants Associated with Lung Cancer Risk in Asian Population.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have consistently identified chromosome 3q28 as a lung cancer susceptibility region. To further characterize the potential genetic mechanism of the variants in this region, we conducted a fine-mapping study on chromosome 3q28 region. We performed a target resequencing in 200 lung cancer cases and 300 controls in the screening and followed by validation in multi-ethnic lung cancer GWASs with 12,843 cases and 12,639 controls.

Associations Between Hepatitis B Virus Infection and Risk of All Cancer Types.

Importance: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been identified as a major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the associations between HBV infection and other cancer types are not well understood.

Objective: To assess the associations between chronic HBV infection and risk of all cancer types.

Polyamine synthesis enzyme AMD1 is closely associated with tumorigenesis and prognosis of human gastric cancers.

Adenosylmethionine decarboxylase 1 (AMD1) is a key enzyme involved in biosynthesis of polyamines including spermidine and spermine. The potential function of AMD1 in human gastric cancers is unknown. We analyzed AMD1 expression level in 319 human gastric cancer samples together with the adjacent normal tissues.

LncRNA TP73-AS1 is upregulated in non-small cell lung cancer and predicts poor survival.

The present study was carried out to investigate the role of lncRNA TP73-AS1 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We found that TP73-AS1 was upregulated in tumor tissues than in non-tumor tissues of NSCLC patients, and high expression levels of TP73-AS1 predicted poor survival. MiR-21 was also upregulated in tumor tissues and positively correlated with TP73-AS1.

Incidence and mortality of thyroid cancer in China, 20082012.

Objective: To analyze the incidence and mortality rates of thyroid cancer (TC) in China from 2008 to 2012.

Methods: Incident and death cases of TC were retrieved from the National Central Cancer Registry (NCCR) database collecting from 135 cancer registries in China during 2008-2012. The crude incidence and mortality rates of TC were calculated by area (urban/rural), region (eastern, middle, western), gender and age group (0, 1-4, 5-9, …, 85+).

Circulating uPA as a potential prognostic biomarker for resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Previous research showed that the 4 genes of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), cyto-keratin 20 (CK20), cyto-keratin 19 (CK19) and urokinase type plasminogen activator (uPA) are detectable in the peripheral blood. All the 4 genes are related to tumor invasion and metastasis. However, whether their expression is associated with clinicopathologic factors and the prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is still confused.

A suggested framework for conducting esophageal cancer screening in China.

Esophageal cancer is one of the most prevalent malignant tumors worldwide. Because of its challenging clinical characteristics, esophageal cancer is a major disease burden on the economy, society, and individuals. There is an urgent need to establish a beneficial policy to reduce the burden and to improve the health-related quality of life of patients.

How to integrate proxy data from two informants in life event assessment in psychological autopsy.

Background: Life event assessment is an important part in psychological autopsy, and how to integrate its proxy data from two informants is a major methodological issue which needs solving.

Methods: Totally 416 living subjects and their two informants were interviewed by psychological autopsy, and life events were assessed with Paykel's Interview for Recent Life Events. Validities of integrated proxy data using six psychological autopsy information reconstruction methods were evaluated, with living subjects' self-reports used as gold-standard criteria.

Changing cancer survival in China during 2003-15: a pooled analysis of 17 population-based cancer registries.

Background: From 2003 to 2005, standardised 5-year cancer survival in China was much lower than in developed countries and varied substantially by geographical area. Monitoring population-level cancer survival is crucial to the understanding of the overall effectiveness of cancer care. We therefore aimed to investigate survival statistics for people with cancer in China between 2003 and 2015.

Thyroid cancer: trends in incidence, mortality and clinical-pathological patterns in Zhejiang Province, Southeast China.

Background: Thyroid cancer is the most common malignant disease of the endocrine system. Previous studies indicate a rapid increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer in recent decades, and this increase has aroused the great public concern. The aim of this study was to analyze the trends in incidence, mortality and clinical-pathological patterns of thyroid cancer in Zhejiang province.

However, the role of macronutrition, including animal peptides, on epigenetic modification in cancer has been elusive. In traditional Chinese medicine, the soft-shelled turtle has a long-history of being a functional food that strengthens immunity through unknown mechanisms.

Acetylation accumulates PFKFB3 in cytoplasm to promote glycolysis and protects cells from cisplatin-induced apoptosis.

Enhanced glycolysis in cancer cells has been linked to cell protection from DNA damaging signals, although the mechanism is largely unknown. The 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3) catalyzes the generation of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, a potent allosteric stimulator of glycolysis. Intriguingly, among the four members of PFKFB family, PFKFB3 is uniquely localized in the nucleus, although the reason remains unclear.

The Incidence and Mortality of Cervical Cancer in Ningbo during 2006-2014, China.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer during 2006-2014 in Ningbo, China.

Methods: A retrospective study involved 3418 newly diagnosed cervical cancer cases and 854 death cases were performed. All cases were registered in Cancer Registry Center of Ningbo Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Potential role of NDRG2 in reprogramming cancer metabolism and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition.

Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) allows a cell with epithelial characteristics to transdifferentiate into a cell with mesenchymal characteristics, which is recognized as a key priming event for the initiation and evolvement of cancer metastasis. Accumulating data have shown that aberrant cancer metabolism contributes to the execution of EMT and cancer metastasis through multiple pathological pathways. Recently, the N-MYC downstream-regulated gene 2 (NDRG2), as a tumor suppressor and metabolism-related gene in various cancers, has been widely noted.

PAQR4 has a tumorigenic effect in human breast cancers in association with reduced CDK4 degradation.

Progestin and adipoQ receptor 4 (PAQR4) is a member of the PAQR family, and the members within this family are involved in the regulation of a number of biological processes including metabolism and cancer development. The potential function of PAQR4 in human cancers is unknown. Analysis of ONCOMINE database reveals that PAQR4 is highly expressed in human breast cancers.

2-Acetylamino-3-[4-(2-acetylamino-2-carboxyethylsulfanylcarbonylamino) phenyl carbamoylsulfanyl] propionic acid, a glutathione reductase inhibitor, induces G/M cell cycle arrest through generation of thiol oxidative stress in human esophageal cancer cells.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a highly malignant cancer with poor response to both of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. 2-Acetylamino-3-[4-(2-acetylamino-2-carboxyethylsulfanylcarbonylamino) phenyl carbamoylsulfanyl] propionic acid (2-AAPA), an irreversible inhibitor of glutathione reductase (GR), is able to induce intracellular oxidative stress, and has shown anticancer activity in many cancer cell lines. In this study, we investigated the effects of 2-AAPA on the cell proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis and aimed to explore its mechanism of action in human esophageal cancer TE-13 cells.
