January 2025

Department of Pathogen Biology and Immunology, Kunming Medical University, Kunming 650500, China. *Corresponding authors, E-mail:

The innate immune response is the first line of defense for the host against viral infections. Targeted degradation of pathogenic microorganisms through autophagy, in conjunction with pattern recognition receptors synergistically inducing the production of interferon (IFN), constitutes an important pathway for the body to resist viral infections. Rubicon, a Run domain Beclin 1-interacting and cysteine-rich domain protein, has an inhibitory effect on autophagy and IFN production.

January 2025

Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Plant Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation, Taizhou Key Laboratory of Biomedicine and Advanced Dosage Forms, School of Life Sciences, Taizhou University, Taizhou, 318000, Zhejiang Province, China.

The microbiota inhabiting the surface of fish mucosal tissue play important roles in the nutrition, metabolism and immune system of their host. However, most investigations on microbial symbionts have focused on the fish gut, but the microbiota associated with external mucosal tissues (such as the skin and gill) is poorly understood. This study characterised the traits and dynamic of microbial communities associated with the skin, gill and gut of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) culturing with net enclosures or pens at different sampling times (with seasonal transition).

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Water Pollution Control and Environmental Safety of Zhejiang Province, Department of Environmental Engineering, Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou, 310058, P.R. China.

Applying nano-delivery systems for phytohormones via foliar application has proven effective in reducing grain cadmium (Cd) levels in crops. However, the mechanisms underlying this reduction remain inadequately understood. This study integrated the determination of leaf photosynthetic parameters, Cd translocation analysis, and metabolomics to elucidate the effects of reduced glutathione (GSH) and melatonin (MT), delivered with or without chitosan-encapsulated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-CS), on grain Cd levels in rice.

Cryo-EM structure of an activated GPR4-Gs signaling complex.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Genome Editing and Cell Therapy, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Regulatory Biology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences and School of Life Sciences, East China Normal University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • G protein-coupled receptor 4 (GPR4) is part of a group called proton-sensing GPCRs that respond to pH changes and regulate various physiological functions, with its overactivation noted in acidic tumor environments.
  • Researchers used cryo-electron microscopy to determine the 3D structures of zebrafish GPR4 at different pH levels, revealing important histidine and acidic residues that affect its proton-sensing ability, alongside key triad residues.
  • The study also identified a cluster of aromatic residues in GPR4's orthosteric pocket that may play a crucial role in transferring signals to the inside of the cell, laying the groundwork for further research on psGPCRs.

Inhibited peroxidase activity of peroxiredoxin 1 by palmitic acid exacerbates nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in male mice.

NHC Key Laboratory of Hormones and Development, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Metabolic Diseases, The province and ministry co-sponsored collaborative innovation center for medical epigenetics, Chu Hsien-I Memorial Hospital & Tianjin Institute of Endocrinology, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, 300134, China.

Reactive oxygen species exacerbate nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) by oxidizing macromolecules; yet how they promote NASH remains poorly understood. Here, we show that peroxidase activity of global hepatic peroxiredoxin (PRDX) is significantly decreased in NASH, and palmitic acid (PA) binds to PRDX1 and inhibits its peroxidase activity. Using three genetic models, we demonstrate that hepatic PRDX1 protects against NASH in male mice.

Cities exhibit diverse urban metabolism patterns in terms of the natural environment, industrial composition, energy, and material consumption. A chronicled city-level quantification of emergy metabolic flows over time can significantly enhance the understanding of the temporal dynamics and urban metabolism patterns, which provides critical insights for the transitions to sustainability. However, there exists no city-level urban emergy metabolism dataset in China that can support detailed spatial-temporal analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Response inhibition is crucial for cognitive function, with key brain regions involved being the presupplementary motor area (preSMA) and the right inferior frontal cortex (rIFC), though their specific roles are debated.
  • Using fMRI, this study examined how these regions contribute to stopping responses during tasks designed to measure inhibitory control, specifically the Go/No-Go task and the Stop Signal Task.
  • Findings indicated that the rIFC is linked to pausing responses, while the preSMA is more directly involved in stopping responses effectively, supporting the Pause-then-Cancel Model.
