Background: Vancomycin is widely used for infections caused by gram-positive bacteria, but little attention has been paid to vancomycin in the treatment of critically ill patients aged ≥80 years. The aim of the current study was to investigate the efficacy of vancomycin and risk factors associated with nephrotoxicity of vancomycin in elderly critically ill patients.
Methods: A retrospective study was performed in a 14-bed medical-surgical geriatric ICU between January 2007 and June 2014.

Inflammation plays a critical role in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), which has been identified as a major predisposing factor for heart failure in diabetic patients. Previous studies indicated that ivabradine (a specific agent for heart rate [HR] reduction) has anti-inflammatory properties, but its role in DCM remains unknown. This study investigated whether ivabradine exerts a therapeutic effect in DCM.

Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) is a common malignancy of the salivary glands. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and P53 signaling pathway are associated with SACC metastasis and progression. Although simvastatin (SIM) is effective against the growth of many cancer types, its side effects limit its use.

Background: Bronchial asthma (BA) is a common chronic respiratory disease that has exhibited a rising global incidence in recent years. Glucocorticoids are used for the treatment of BA. Emerging evidence has demonstrated the roles of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in BA.

Gap junctions (GJ), as a special membrane structure between adjacent cells, are composed of connexins (Cx) and regulate the proliferation and differentiation of cells. Studies show that gap junctional intercellular communication is weakened or lost in most tumor cells and this abnormality is often accompanied by changed expression of Cxs. Cx43 is a major connexin in the testis tissue.

This study aimed to explore crucial genes, transcription factors (TFs), and microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with the effects of curcumin against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We downloaded data (GSE59713) from Gene Expression Omnibus to analyze differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between curcumin-treated and untreated HCC cell lines. Then, we identified the disease ontology (DO) and functional enrichment analysis of these DEGs and analyzed their protein-protein interactions (PPIs).

Objective: Oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. The gene AT-rich interactive domain 1A (ARID1A), is frequently down regulated and inactivated in endometriosis. This report is focused on the molecular mechanism of the correlation between oxidative stress and ARID1A gene expression in endometrial cell oxidative damage model.

Objective: To investigate the expression level of long non-coding RNA promoter of CDKN1A antisense DNA damage activated RNA (lncRNA PANDAR) in cervical cancer and to analyze the effects of PANDAR on biological behaviors of cervical cancer and the clinical significance of PANDAR.
Patients And Methods: A total of 68 pairs of cervical cancer and paired cancer-adjacent tissue specimens were collected. The relative expression of PANDAR in tissues was detected by quantitative Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) so as to analyze the relationship between PANDAR and clinicopathological factors of cervical cancer and evaluate its clinical significance.

Background: This study aimed to explore the effects of microRNA-21-5p (miR-21-5p) on the radiation sensitivity of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the involvement of human MutS homolog 2 (hMSH2) One hundred fourteen NSCLC patients at stage II or III who received surgery and postoperative radiotherapy were enrolled in this study.
Methods: The patients were assigned into radiation-sensitive and -insensitive groups. NSCLC A549 cells were transfected to generate control, Negative control (NC), miR-21-5p inhibitor, miR-21-5p mimic, small interfering hMSH2 (sihMSH2), miR-21-5p inhibitor + sihMSH2 and hMSH2 overexpression groups.

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify independent risk factors for postoperative intra-abdominal abscess (IAA) after appendectomy for patients with acute appendicitis.
Backgraound: Although laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) has been performed universally, whether LA is associated with an increased incidence of postoperative IAA compared with open appendectomy (OA) remains controversial, which causes some surgeons' increasing concerns.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 6805 consecutive adult patients with acute appendicitis who underwent LA or OA at 7 general hospitals in China.

Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate that the therapeutic potential of microRNA-31 after spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats and to expound the potential neuroprotective mechanisms. In SCI model, microRNA-31 expression was up-regulated, compared with negative group. In vitro model, over-expression of microRNA-31 increases cell apoptosis and inflammation, compared with negative control group.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) has been recognized and studied for nearly 300 years, but past researches mainly focus on its toxicity effect. During the past two decades, the majority of researches have reported that HS is a novel endogenous gaseous signal molecule in organisms, and play an important role in various systems and diseases. HS is mainly produced by three enzymes, including cystathionine β-synthase, cystathionine γ-lyase and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase along with cysteine aminotransferase.
