Human menstrual blood-derived stem cells promote functional recovery in a rat spinal cord hemisection model.

Cell Death Dis

August 2018

Department of Anatomy, Medical School of Nantong University, Laboratory Animal Center of Nantong University, Nantong, Jiangsu Province, 226001, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to serious motor and sensory deficits, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatment options, such as the use of menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs).
  • In a study, MenSCs were transplanted into rats with incomplete thoracic spinal cord injuries, resulting in improved hind limb motor function, reduced cavity formation, and increased mature neuron presence compared to untreated rats.
  • The study found that MenSCs enhance recovery through increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels and reduced inflammation, suggesting that MenSCs could be a promising new therapy for SCI patients.

Inflammation plays a critical role in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), which has been identified as a major predisposing factor for heart failure in diabetic patients. Previous studies indicated that ivabradine (a specific agent for heart rate [HR] reduction) has anti-inflammatory properties, but its role in DCM remains unknown. This study investigated whether ivabradine exerts a therapeutic effect in DCM.

Department of Oral Medicine, School of Stomatology, Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou 221000, China. Electronic address:

Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) is a common malignancy of the salivary glands. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and P53 signaling pathway are associated with SACC metastasis and progression. Although simvastatin (SIM) is effective against the growth of many cancer types, its side effects limit its use.

[Correlation of connexin 43 with testicular tumors].

Zhonghua Nan Ke Xue

March 2017

Department of Pharmacy, Zhangjiagang First People's Hospital, Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu 215600, China .

Gap junctions (GJ), as a special membrane structure between adjacent cells, are composed of connexins (Cx) and regulate the proliferation and differentiation of cells. Studies show that gap junctional intercellular communication is weakened or lost in most tumor cells and this abnormality is often accompanied by changed expression of Cxs. Cx43 is a major connexin in the testis tissue.

Inhibition of hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis by curcumin may be associated with CDKN1A and CTGF.

Gene

April 2018

Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) Prevention and Treatment of Tumor, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210023, China.

This study aimed to explore crucial genes, transcription factors (TFs), and microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with the effects of curcumin against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We downloaded data (GSE59713) from Gene Expression Omnibus to analyze differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between curcumin-treated and untreated HCC cell lines. Then, we identified the disease ontology (DO) and functional enrichment analysis of these DEGs and analyzed their protein-protein interactions (PPIs).

Article Synopsis
  • Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the leading viral cause of birth defects and mental disability in newborns, with its UL141 glycoprotein helping infected cells evade immune response.
  • The study explored how HCMV UL141 interacts with the human protein CELF5, finding that UL141 binds directly to CELF5 and co-locates in cell cytoplasm.
  • While CELF5 overexpression increased HCMV viral copy number and production, reducing CELF5 levels had no effect, suggesting CELF5 may play a role in regulating viral DNA synthesis, potentially contributing to neurological issues.

The miR-875-5p inhibits SATB2 to promote the invasion of lung cancer cells.

Gene

February 2018

Zhangjiagang First People 's Hospital, Zhangjiagang Hospital Affiliated to Suzhou University, Zhangjiagang 215600, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights that miR-875-5p is up-regulated in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and promotes tumor cell growth and spread by inhibiting SATB2.
  • CCK-8 assays indicate that introducing miR-875-5p mimics increases cell proliferation, while Transwell assays demonstrate enhanced invasion and migration of NSCLC cells.
  • Luciferase and western blotting assays confirm that miR-875-5p directly interacts with SATB2's 3' UTR, reducing its protein expression, suggesting that targeting miR-875-5p could be a viable treatment strategy for NSCLC.

Article Synopsis
  • * A meta-analysis of 18 studies suggests that radiation doses between 50 and 70 Gy can lead to better patient outcomes, particularly for those receiving 60 Gy or more, with significant benefits observed mainly in Asian populations.
  • * Despite these findings, results from Western studies regarding the benefits of doses ≥ 60 Gy are mixed, indicating a need for further research, while overall, higher doses seem to improve locoregional control and survival rates for non-operable esophageal cancer.

Hydrogen sulfide therapy in brain diseases: from bench to bedside.

Med Gas Res

June 2017

Department of Neurosurgery & Brain and Nerve Research Laboratory, The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) has been recognized and studied for nearly 300 years, but past researches mainly focus on its toxicity effect. During the past two decades, the majority of researches have reported that HS is a novel endogenous gaseous signal molecule in organisms, and play an important role in various systems and diseases. HS is mainly produced by three enzymes, including cystathionine β-synthase, cystathionine γ-lyase and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase along with cysteine aminotransferase.
