To analyze the correlation between nasal mucosal microbiota diversity and the pathogenesis and prognosis of chronic sinusitis. A total of 80 patients with chronic sinusitis(CRS) admitted to Second Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou University were selected as the research group, and 80 patients with chronic dacryocystitis and nasal septum deviation without sinus inflammation admitted to our hospital during the same period were selected as the control group, nasal secretory specimens were collected under nasal endoscopic guidance by nasal swab, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization classification time mass spectrometry, anaerobic bacterial culture and common bacterial culture were performed to compare the differences in nasal mucosal flora between groups. Patients with chronic sinusitis were followed up for 6 months, and nasal secretions were collected again to detect microflora, and the patients were divided into relapse group(21 cases) and non-recurrence group(59 cases) according to whether the patients had relapse.

Introduction: Elderly patients are at a high risk of postoperative delirium (POD), leading to increased postoperative morbidity and mortality. The use of dexmedetomidine and depth of anaesthesia may influence POD. This study aims to determine the effects of dexmedetomidine infusion versus normal saline placebo during light versus deep anaesthesia on POD among elderly patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery.

Background: Age-related reproductive aging is a natural and irreversible physiological process, and delaying childbearing is increasingly common all over the world. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is considered a new and effective therapy to restore ovarian function, but the relevant mechanisms remain unclear. Recently, it has been found that there is a local Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in human ovary and it plays a key role.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at two types of treatments for a broken hip called femoral neck fractures: the femoral neck system (FNS) and cannulated cancellous screws (CCSs).
  • Researchers compared how well these treatments worked by checking things like how long patients stayed in the hospital, how quickly their fractures healed, and their overall recovery afterwards.
  • The results showed that the FNS treatment was better in many ways, like needing less time in the hospital and having better healing scores compared to CCSs.

Background: It is currently uncertain whether the combination of a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitor and high-intensity statin treatment can effectively reduce cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for culprit lesions.

Methods: This study protocol describes a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter study aiming to investigate the efficacy and safety of combining a PCSK9 inhibitor with high-intensity statin therapy in patients with ACS following PCI. A total of 1,212 patients with ACS and multiple lesions will be enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either PCSK9 inhibitor plus high-intensity statin therapy or high-intensity statin monotherapy.

Identification of early coagulation changes associated with survival outcomes post severe burns from multiple perspectives.

Sci Rep

May 2024

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Shanghai East Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, 200120, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Severe burns can lead to changes in coagulation that are closely tied to how likely a patient is to survive, but the exact changes related to early death aren't fully understood.
  • - Researchers identified 28 genes connected to coagulation that change after burn injuries and found that certain genes like CYP4F2 and P2RX1 can predict fatal outcomes based on immune response.
  • - Clinically, high levels of D-dimer and changes in serum calcium are strong indicators of mortality, highlighting that monitoring these coagulation markers can help prioritize critical care for at-risk patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Activated vascular endothelial cells (VEC), marked by high levels of CD62E and reactive oxygen species (ROS), can hinder cartilage repair, leading to the development of a responsive drug delivery system (ETS) to target these cells with a focus on using Clematis triterpenoid saponins (CS).
  • The ETS/CS system was tested in vitro to confirm its ability to inhibit VEC activation, promote chondrogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs), and suppress inflammation caused by activated VEC and macrophages.
  • In a rat knee cartilage defect model, the ETS/CS treatment demonstrated effectiveness by reducing VEC activation and inflammation while enhancing BMSC differentiation, showing potential for improving articular

Sci Rep

February 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory, National Center for Respiratory Medicine, National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease, State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

This study is nationwide multicenter epidemiological research, aimed at investigating the distribution changes and seasonal patterns of various airborne allergens among preschool children with allergic rhinitis (AR) in different regions of China, and analyzing the clinical correlation between sensitization to various airborne allergens and AR symptoms in children. Information on children was collected through standard questionnaires, and total IgE (tIgE) and specific IgE (sIgE) for 11 inhalant allergens were tested. The results showed that dust mites are the primary allergens for preschool AR children (39%).

Background: Porous cages are considered a promising alternative to high-density cages because their interconnectivity favours bony ingrowth and appropriate stiffness tuning reduces stress shielding and the risk of cage subsidence.

Methods: This study proposes three approaches that combine macroscopic topology optimization and micropore design to establish three new types of porous cages by integrating lattices (gyroid, Schwarz, body-centred cubic) with the optimized cage frame. Using these three porous cages along with traditional high-density cages, four ACDF surgical models were developed to compare the mechanical properties of facet articular cartilage, discs, cortical bone, and cages under specific loads.

Objective: To investigate values of biochemical indices and clinical scoring systems for the assessment of acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP).

Methods: Clinical characteristics, laboratory values including procalcitonin (PCT), and radiologic examinations of all ABP patients with mild acute pancreatitis (MAP), moderately severe acute pancreatitis (MSAP), or severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) were recorded within 48 hours after the onset of acute pancreatitis. Scores of the Accuracy of Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II, Bedside Index of Severity in Acute Pancreatitis (BISAP), Computed Tomography Severity Index (CTSI), Ranson, Japanese Severity Score (JSS), Pancreatitis Outcome Prediction (POP) Score and Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) score were then calculated.

Department of Gynecology, Zhangjiagang First People's Hospital, Zhangjiagang Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu, China; Department of Oncology, The Affiliated Jiangning Hospital with Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

MircoRNA (miRNA), which are a group of small, and highly conserved non-coding RNA consisting of 18-25 nucleotides, can modulate gene expression at post-transcriptional level, through complementary binding to the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of numerous target genes. Emerging evidence indicates that miRNAs play critical roles in tumorigenesis and progression of cancer. Among them, miR-211 has been extensively studied in multiple cancers.
